This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • Prius - It could be better. - 2005 Toyota Prius

Engine noisy during acceleration. A rattle developed in the dash and the service department cannot seem to fix it. The Prius has a small fuel tank (only 11 gallons) - which means that the driving range is not far - though gas mileage is good. The Honda Civic Hybrid has a standard tank (13 gallons) and much longer range. If I had it to do again I would go for the Civic or no hybrid at all.

I waited from 6/28 to 10/29 for delivery and I received exactly the vehicle I wanted-pkg #6, a 2005 salsa red pearl loaded. I drove home from the dealership on the freeway at 60 - 65 mph and I got 47 mpg! Two weeks later, I filled the gas tank for approx $14! I had already driven my sons 2004 with pkg #8, so I wasnt surprised by the quiet motor, smooth ride, and good pick-up. I sat in the drive the next day with the engine turned on (not a sound) the car in park learning the mapping system and setting up the Bluetooth link with my Motorola V600 cell phone. (20 minutes) The mapping system later guided me directly to a hotel 190 mls away.

Our Prius is an excellent automobile in every respect. We have driven it on a long trip through the mountains and snow, city driving, hot weather, rain and it performed beautifully. On a long trip we never got tired of riding and were very comfortable. The engine has plenty of power and zip for its size, even accelerating up the mountains of Colorado. We are glad that we were patient enough to wait for it, eight months, it was worth every minute and cent we paid.

  • $$$ Saver !!! - 2005 Toyota Prius

skepticism was my first feeling but it was won over by the gas saving feature. The voice activation is a bit "clumsy" (ie "AM" vs. "ATM") but we work around it. Constant MPG tells us our economy which is good. Only one some thing I find is the body in which can be improved to look like a car rather than a "Jetsons" car. It is economical for the one wantting to save gas and preserve the world, but for the power hungry driver (as I am), not one to have in your driveway. Thanks Toyota for the car, more money to spend on the wife.

  • Love My Prius! - 2005 Toyota Prius

Cannot believe how much power the Prius has! Impressed the guys at the office! Great design, everything is in the right place. Fab gas mileage at around 60/gal! Wonderful body styling; MANY drivers slow down to check out my Prius, then speed up to get a view of the front. Very nice Smart Key entry: keep the key in a pocket, briefcase or purse, approach the car and pull on the door handle. Its now unlocked without having to pull out the Smart Key / remote. Starts without pulling out the Smart Key / remote, too. Cant say enough positive things about the Prius! Theres normally a waiting list but I got it right off the showroom floor - VERY fortunate. LOVE MY PRIUS

I have owned my 05 Prius for about two and half months (took delivery in March 05) after waiting over a year to get it. Im enjoying this car more than any other Ive owned! Current MPG since taking delivery is just under 49. I drive 5o miles to and from work, speeds averaging 30-40 mph. Two kids in car seats fit great in the back. Acceleration has never been a problem, but Ive had limited highway driving in the car. Rapid acceleration does lower fuel economy, with which Ive been a little obsessed: hopefully afte a little while Ill shut off the mileage gauge and just drive! Cabin noise nonexistent, especially when on electric, you barely even know the car is on! Im loving it!

I average 55+ MPG with my Prius. I find that I have changed my driving habits to achieve this mileage. Im slow off the line and use the cruise control regularly. These make the biggest difference. Im 6 6" and the ride is roomy and comfortable.

  • Best car I have ever owned - 2005 Toyota Prius

Everything I wanted in/on a car isstandard on the Prius. I opted for the silent entry and the two extra side window curtain air bags and the floormats for a low $1,080 over the low priceof $19,995. LMRps Electric windows and doorlocks-cruise control-electric heater-power steering-powerbrakes-cannot leave head-lights on after exiting-super low coefficient of drag ALL standard equipment and you dont have to plug it in over night!!! Only thing I dont like is I forget to take my car key cuz I only need it to unlock the doors if it is in my pocket.

  • second to none - 2005 Toyota Prius

By far the best car Ive ever owned. The spaciousness of the car, both seating and the ability to carry large of boxes, packages, is oustanding. With the back seats down and the front passenger seat down, I was able to carry an 8 foot ladder entirely with the car. I drive the car between S.F. and Las Vegas monthly, on each trip I stop once for refueling and arrive at my destination without feeling either tired or cramped (and I am no small guy). Servicing the car is easy, every 5000 miles I bring it to my local dealership... No problems, great service. I can not wait for my wife to start looking for a new car.... the choice will be easy... it will be another Prius.

We have owned this car for exactly one year and have no problems or complaints. We have taken the car on a 3000+ mile trip (CT to Fla) as well as a daily driver, and its been comfortable and reliable as well as a lot of fun to drive. Our current mileage (winter, combined) is about 45 mpg; on the highway if we keep it around 60 mph is 58. Combine this with the fun factor and reasonable price and we are extremely satisfied.
