Overview & Reviews
For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.
- Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
- Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

Almost perfect Prius - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Gary - June 25 - 5:56 amAfter 14 months my only problem has been having to have the computer screen replaced under warranty. I am probably averaging about 44 miles per gallon. Incredible.

Great - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Diane - June 5 - 5:36 pmI love everything about my Prius. The fuel economy, handling, comfort, looks and reliability. The only "problem" I have noted is that it doesnt seem to do as well, fuelwise, in below zero weather. The instrument panel is very user friendly, as are most of the features

goin green - 2005 Toyota Prius
By dave - May 26 - 5:53 pmI really like the 2005 model prius. I got the smart entry which worth the extra money. My only disappointment is the winter driving milage. I get about 40mpg (they boast 50-60mpg). In the summer mpg is about 45. They dont tell you your winter milage will be less due to the fact that the engine must stay on longer in order to keep the interior car temp. warm. But...40 mpg is still great considering the roominess and comfort of this car.

After one month - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Carl Straub - May 25 - 7:43 amThe Prius has been better than anticipated. We have the #1 option. (no GPS or fancy key). Rented one for 4 days so we could try first. The electric engine provides a lot of torque going up hills etc. The acceleration is actually good if needed. It has good room inside. You soon get used to not seeing front "hood", actually stop too far away at first. Also own large sedan (LS 400) but find we jump in Prius most of the time. Here is clincher--was able to get a load from Costco home (folded down rear seats). If youre consider it-rent one first. Enterprise has them.

2005 Toyota Prius Power - 2005 Toyota Prius
By mb - May 17 - 1:06 pmDriving this vehicle, when my wife allows, is fun. Its quiet! Its mechanically sound and fuel efficient. Its part of the oil consumption solution. I like the fuel consumption gauge and center display, which is fully adjustable to the light conditions. The car accelerates well, its not a dragster. There is more room in the rear seat for me at 62. We get anywhere from 47 to 51 mpg. The smart entry system is great as well as the standard safety features. We wish Toyota would use better interior trim materials, add an option for a small towing hitch or bike racks. A larger battery capacity with an increased range in speed would make the car more efficient.

Feedback after 20,000 miles - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Geo-Green - May 10 - 1:20 amI am motivated to review the Prius again (after having the car for over a year and a half) because so many people are now interested in the car -- thanks to higher fuel prices. Regarding the mileage: It is always exceptional but will fall short of the EPA parameters especially in the heat of the summer when the AC is on. I drive a mix of congested local and highway. When very hot outside, the "worst" mileage is 44 mpg. The very best mileage? I am now averaging 54 miles per gallon in temperate weather. There are ways to improve your fuel economy and as one gets acclimated to the hybrid engine, mileage should improve even more. Its both patriotic to country and greener for our planet.

Prius review 2005 - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Cathy Meiklem - May 2 - 7:53 pmGas mileage is not what they report. Ive driven 6000 miles and the best Ive gotten on a tank is 45 mpg. I have the fully loaded car and love the high tech blue tooth and navigation. Car is fun to drive but dont expect luxury, interior is nothing special and not easy to clean. The material they use for the dash is very difficult to clean. Im hoping they start to make a model with leather. Even with the slight drawbacks I would still buy this car again.

Mileage Surprise - 2005 Toyota Prius
By ned.dick - April 29 - 7:50 pmWith the premium some dealers are adding on to the Prius I started wondering if my concern for the environment was worth it. I have been pleasantly surprised. Driving the car reasonably with acceptable limits I get just under 49 mpg. On a trial using max speed of 55 mph and air conditioner only when really needed I got an incredible 62.4 mpg. Since I live in the foothills of western NC I think this is outstanding. Just watching the use of my air conditioner and staying at the speed limit (70 mph on Interstate I travel) gives me an average of 51.3 mpg. Over my 6 cyl. SUV that I use to commute in Ive saved over $800 in the 15,400 miles I driven in the last 8 months.

Travelling salesman sold on Prius - 2005 Toyota Prius
By danbarnardjr - April 27 - 6:46 pmIn 18 months I have put on 54,000+ miles on my Toyota Prius. Small problems with some defective sensing units were identified by my dealer and corrected (at no cost to me) by Toyota. The car drives like a real car: I can accelerate and pass when necessary; I can drive all day long at highway speeds. I can carry a full load of samples and catalogs and still average 52-55 mpg. In the winter (I live in NH) the mileage drops to between 48-52 mpg. I spend 3-4 hours a day in the car. My back feels as good as my wallet.

Prius - 2005 Toyota Prius
By myprius - April 12 - 2:00 amThis car is extremely fun to drive and very quiet. Perfect for listening to music in or just relaxing. Exterior noise from other cars is cancelled out nicely and you can enjoy a smooth quiet ride. If you practice at it, you can learn to drive a certain way to increase fuel economy and get better than the posted avg of 60 mpg. However, in the winter months my fuel economy has dropped and Im not sure why but assume it is due to the temperature drop. The car works well in all conditions, but you do have to be careful on wet and icy roads because of the small wheel base.
