This Year's Model Updates:

For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.

Pros:
  • Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
Cons:
  • Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

  • We LOVE this Prius - 2005 Toyota Prius

The gas mileage and the engineering that went into the design and of this car is supurb. It proves that hybird cars can be built and are in demand in this country. We waited 8 months for ours; now the anticipated wait is 18 months. We had the choice of the car that came in with its factory options or waiting for the next one. As supply equals demand perhaps specific options can be ordered and delivered as ordered. Meanwhile, like the VW of old, you take what comes in. One difficulty is determining where the curb of the road is - there is no visable fender to guide driver. Love it.

Rear view mirror difficult to see. Only goes 45-47 mpg local driving ... hoping this will improve. Otherwise it is a fun car to drive ... very user-oriented.

Although I am still learning how to maximize my gas mileage, it increases each tankful. The secret is to maximize the coasting times. One tankful I tried to go minimum speeds to utilize the electric motor as much as possible and found I was not charging it enough. A good mix of driving and coasting seems to be the key. There are no two drivers whose techniques are alike so you have to learn as you go.

  • I love it, but....... - 2005 Toyota Prius

I bought it over a MINI COOPER S, mainly because of the mileage and comfort. The mileage, as expected has not been what is advertised, I get about 40mpg on average, mostly highway miles. The creature comforts, however, have been more than I ever expected. The car is solid and quiet beyond any expectations. It handles as good as any small car Ive driven, and even I can sit in the back middle seat(it holds 5 adults) comfortably.... Im 61". Its quiet beyond belief, even on the highway at 75mph. Mine is fully loaded and I probably paid too much..... but I love it.

  • Love my Prius! - 2005 Toyota Prius

We waited 9 months to receive our 2005 Prius and we couldnt be happier. We are looking forward to our first long distance trip. This is our second Toyota. We have a 1991 Previa with 225,000 miles and still going strong. We love our Toyotas.

  • The best car in the world. - 2005 Toyota Prius

In April 2004, I purchased a Prius for my wife, but I quickly found that I was driving the Prius 95% of the time. In July I found another Prius available in Florida with all options. We quickly drove to Florida to pick up our second Prius that I purchased over the telephone. I guess you could title that doubling your pleasure. Since I didnt want to put my wife through the task of learning about navigation systems and all the other great options, I decided to drive the fully equipped Prius. On the spur of the monment we could be driving to Toronto, Cape Cob, Pinehurst, NC, or Florida, enjoying the best car in the world. By the way we are both in the mid-seventies.

  • too new to have problems - 2005 Toyota Prius

I have less than 400 miles on my Prius. Mileage would be in the 42 to 45mpg so far, highway and city. but I am having display console issues already. Some options gray out when I accelerate and once I could not control the radio volume manual or remotely. Car has potential but these problems should not be happening.

My wife and I love the gas mileage and the feel of the car on the road. There is some pushing around on interstate roads when driving near large trucks.

I was driving a Jaguar Vanden Plas full size sport sedan. Loved that car, but the Prius is just as fun and at the same time economical and environmentally friendly. I would definitely buy another, and may in fact in a month or two. I did get the configuration with every accessory available and that is part of why I love it so much. But, I am a 6.5 hour drive from my daughter in Atlanta and $20 in gas to get there even at $3/gallon is out of this world. One of my sons and I also like to see how long we can drive just on battery and post 99+ mpg on the panel; 15 minutes, WOW! Dont buy one! That way I wont have such competition when I buy my second, third, and fourth yet this year!
