Overview & Reviews
For the 2005 Toyota Prius, a rear wiper is now standard, the sun visor material has been changed from vinyl to fabric, and the Smart Entry and Start system has been renamed the Smart Key System.
- Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, generous amount of interior room, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
- Less power than other midsize sedans, some confusing controls, real-world driving results in lower mileage than the window sticker suggests.

Lust, Love, Commitment - 2005 Toyota Prius
By rpaulh - January 14 - 12:36 pmThe tank is still FULL from the dealer, after one week and 100 miles! I cant stop thinking about "her" at night, in the morning, and during my day. Is it possible to Lust, Love and Commit to Prius? "She" is even better than MapQuest and Google maps combined! Always powerful, sultry looking, Smart in multiple ways, an efficiently pumping Heart, and filled with Soul. Luckily, my wife approves - and we are a happy family of three :) I LOVE YOU PRIUS!

Toyota Hybrids still rule - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Owner of Two Hybrids - January 7 - 10:30 pmExcellent car except for expectation of better mileage has been a miserable failure. We also own a 2002 Prius and its mileage per gallon is close to the Prius 04. Both average between 37 to 41 miles per gallon. The 2002 has about 20,000 miles, while the 2004 has just under 10,000. Sharp turning radius is great. Steering and suspension the best of any car Ive ever owned. Its too bad the rating is so far off and is still being used on the new window stickers.

After 2 months - 2005 Toyota Prius
By p50 - January 7 - 2:26 amThe first several tanks average between 42~45 mpg for mostly city driving. I am pretty happy about that especially considering it is during Jan and Feb, the two worst fuel economy months. Didnt have any fuel gauge inaccuracy problem as stated by previous reviewers. The car produces several funny buzzing sounds when braking and after parked. It is not loud or annoying, but I was a bit worried initially until I realize it is normal (by observation and talking to the dealer). The acceleration is adequate but could use some boost. The car is otherwise great. A fully loaded car with a price comparable to a similarly equipped 4-cyl. Camry. I only waited for 3 weeks.

Still excellent after 28,000 miles - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Mike - December 16 - 12:20 amExcellent car. Does NOT require the "dealer recommended" maintenance services. Follow what Toyota recommends. I have had ZERO problems in 28,000 miles. Average 50 mpg in spring/summer/fall and 46 mpg in winter. I added a tint to the upper portion of the windshield to assist in sun blocking. I will be buying another.

Satisfied owner - 2005 Toyota Prius
By D. Fisher - December 12 - 10:53 pmThis car has surpassed my expectations for a hybrid vehicle. It has more room, response, and features than I expected to get in this type of car. When traveling longer distances, I do get between 48 and 53 MPG. On flat roadways on shorter distances I have seen higher. The overall landscape is hilly where I live and generally the MPG is in the high 40s. This is lower than advertised but much greater than my previous car which had a V-6 engine.

Prius Safety concerns - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Rog LaShomb - December 9 - 2:53 pmMileage projections are to high. About 44 is accurate. Storage in back is poor Nice little bins under carpet but they are of no value. Very hard to see out of when changing lanes. Can you this vehicle being accident prone. Hard to see out from sides also. Very poor design for safety factors. Bad seat roomy comfortable. Smart key system makes it very easy to leave keys in car.

Love this car! - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Charles Murphy - December 7 - 7:36 pmI traded my Toyota 4Runner for a Prius. Average gas mileage went from 18 on the 4Runner to 47 on the Prius. Cruising at a steady 65 MPH, it gets 58 MPG. The Prius also rides smoother and quieter, and is a lot more fun to drive. Despite being a lot smaller on the outside, the Prius has more headroom and more comfortable seating. But ignoring comparisons to a big, loaded SUV, the bottom line line is that the Prius is a really good car. Given the exterior dimensions, it has a surprising amount of space on the inside. I made a short trip with 5 guys. Four of us were six feet or over, and two were over 220 pounds. To our surprise, we all fit with no major discomfort. Its just a great car.

Great Vehicle - 2005 Toyota Prius
By Marie - December 1 - 1:23 amI have had the Prius for one year and still love it. First time I have ever bought a car because I wanted it, rather than needed it and am so glad I did. Driving is fun again and I feel that I am as environmentally correct as I can be while using gas. My mileage averages between 45/52, driving normally, depending upon where I am driving, and it has plenty of get up and go when I need it. It is a solid, comfortable ride and very easy to drive. I have back problems and can drive/ride in this vehicle for long periods of time with no problem. Toyota should hire me as a spokesperson as I am always touting its many virtues.

Fun and Sensible Auto - 2005 Toyota Prius
By billclemen - November 27 - 4:33 amThis is the most fun and the most sensible automobile I have ever owned. I enjoy squeezing the last mile out of a gallon of gas, and listening to the 6 CDs, the XM/AM/FM radio. The automatic climate control works perfectly.
