  • Horrible car. - 2003 Toyota Matrix

The ride quality of this car makes a person feel as if hes being kicked in the rear end even on the smallest bumps. I think Youd get a jolt just running over a dime. The clutch is absolutely the worst Ive ever driven, and Ive driven manual transmissions of all sorts for more than 45 years. The shifter is notchy and imprecise, and with 6 speeds, some of them are not really needed and just make the poor clutch that much more noticeable. In addition, it appears that the body is put together with plastic pins instead of screws and bolts. The front valance hangs too low and can hit even the smallest curbs. (Mine was already damaged by a previous owner.) Drivers seat is uncomfortable due to excessive lumbar support and the aforementioned jolts from the suspension. Other plastic items are the cheap door handles, both interior and exterior (I guarantee theyll need replacement sooner than youd like). I cant wait to get rid of this pile of garbage. My sons early Kia was actually better built.

We chose a Toyota given their excellent record and reliability. To date, we have not been let down. In retrospect, we should have spent the additional $$$ and gotten the sport version for added pick up. Perhaps the best feature about the car is its excellente fuel economy. Our other car is a Honda CR-V and it pales in comparison. With rising gas prices, we do appreciate having to fill up the Matrix less frequently.

  • Hatchback, SUV or Wagon, a GREAT CAR! - 2003 Toyota Matrix

When I first saw the car, even though I thought it was the right car for me, I was hesitant to buy it because of the looks. But now it looks better now that I am used to it. It is a great car, quiet and roomy, with good handling and braking. And because it is a Toyota, build quality and reliability will be sound. I love my car!

  • A little disappointed. - 2003 Toyota Matrix

I am a little disappointed with the quality of the interior. Very hard plastic arm rest and many other components. Rattling noises all over. Inside the doors and under the dash. Loud under power engine. I enjoy the gas milage and smooth power train. Cant imagine to rev this engine over 6000 rpm to get extra horse power. I hope that Toyotas reputation will prevail again.

  • Transmission Problems? - 2003 Toyota Matrix
    By -

I really love this car. But I am wondering if anyone else has had any problems with their transmission fluid? This past weekend, I took it for an oil change and the mechanics showed me that the transmission fluid was unusually dirty for the amount of mileage I have on the car. Its at about 12,000 miles. I am very curious to know if anyone else has had this problem....

  • The Matrix reviewed by an owner - 2003 Toyota Matrix

My husband and I bought an XRS with a 6 speed manual. Wed been eying the car since it first debuted at the auto show as perhaps an answer to our car dilema. My husband loves how the XRS has so much power. It handles very nicely for such a tall car. (The 17 inch wheels help). Its roomier than I had expected and I suspect part of the reason for that is because the seats are set high in the car. Riding in the car, you feel like youre high off the road.
