This Year's Model Updates:

The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.

Pros:
  • Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
Cons:
  • These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

I bought my 4runner in 05 with 130k miles on it and didnt blink, now i have 245k miles and have only put a starter on it(are you kidding me). This is the best toyota yet and i have owned 5 toyotas and currently drive a Echo for the gas mileage and it has 190k on it and still running strong. I think about other vehicals but always stay with ol 4runner because it has always been there for me and i look to break the 300k with this truck.

I loved this car until yesterday the engine popped. I was amazed that a Toyota brand cars engine would blow at 140,000 miles. Apparently, 4Runner engines made between 1999-2001 (according to our Toyota dealership sources) made very bad engines that blew. Toyota didnt advertise this, so new car buyers had no idea. I now have a great car with no engine. I wish I would have known that their engines were bad during those years.

I bought the limited 4Runner in 1999. This truck is a dream. It has the best lines of any SUV on the road (exterior). Inside is very sleek with tan leather and lots of wood on the dash and console. Sound system is incredible. You see plenty of old 4 runners on the road and there is a good reason why. They are tough, very dependable, smooth and look great. It aint cheap but what of any value is?

  • very comfortable, so-so mileage - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Bought my 99-4Runner SR5 4WD used in 1/00 w/24k miles for $28k. Have replaced tires, brakes, spark plugs @ 65k. The 4Runner is an adequate compromise between my prev. vehicles: Toyota pickup STD cab (utility) & Dodge Intrepid ES (looks & performance). Sound system & speakers are above average w/excellent tweeter positioning. 4WD works well in MN winters. I like the height of the vehicle. Makes moving in-out of car traffic easy. Synching infant & toddler car seats are adequate w/help of pre-tensioner belts.

Bought this gem in October 2015 with 184k on the clock - one owner, all dealer serviced, etc. A rather rare find. After some back and forth with the dealer, I was OTD at $6800 including taxes, registration and a full tank. Came with Michelin LTX M+S in decent shape - still riding on them at 197k with no appreciable wear. Besides new brake pads/rotors, Bosch 27F-size battery, NGK wires and plugs and a Kenwood Excelon radio, Ive done just a little intake and electrical modding to this vehicle. Needs the Tundra brake upgrade - about $300 in parts. Everything works like it should - love the AWD mode for rainy days and have yet to use the 4WD in Low range. Drives beautifully. Fuel mileage varies from 15-19mpg. Comfortable but snuggish, even with my average build and height.

  • Overall Good SUV - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I have owned this vehicle for over 1 1/2 years and overall its very safe, reliable and dependable. I dont like that it has not much get up and go without taking a second to think about it first. Also, have had to replace rotors 2x now and working on the third. For some reason had strange wear on tires that were put on 9 mo ago and all rotors and tires need to be replaced again to feel stable. Had an accident in it and let me tell you, this is one SAFE car. Im glad I trusted my life in this car. VERY safe in winter.

  • Quaility built to last - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Originally purchased to downsize from my p/u and get more interior room. Sought a Toyota for there good looks and excellent quality. My wife drives it primarily but I enjoy it also, although being 63" makes headroom a slight issue. Also bought because of the excellent resale value, but dont plan on selling it any time soon! Good MPG for SUV. We routinely get 19 MPG around town (V6)

  • Best SUV I have owned - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I bought a 99 4WD SR5 in 12/02. Since then almost 30k miles later, it has been trouble-free. I added fender flares, and have noticed much less road debris on the sides since I put them on. I also added acc fog lights which much improved highway visibility when I cant put high-beams on. Wish I had leather, and you cant add power seats to an SR5, so finding used leather replacements is near impossible. Only complaint is rear end slide in any light rain. As far as fun-to-drive and reliability, I love this truck and would by another.
