This Year's Model Updates:

The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.

Pros:
  • Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
Cons:
  • These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

  • Great Truck - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I have driven this truck on and off road and have never had a problem. I love the body design and the fact that it is truly made to be on and off road unlike most other SUVs that are built only for road use. I couldnt be happier with this vehicle and plan on keeping it a very long time which says all there is to say about its reliability.

Bought off ebay 7/2007 with 100k, did all of the deferred issues,+ new springs, shocks, 1 " lift, changed all fluids, cold air intake. Great quality (mini Land Cruiser) same looks, better mileage. Better 4 wh drive system. Power is a little weak, gas gauge reads empty with 5 gal. in tank (common) this is a true 300K truck with the right mechanic working on it, 1999s are the year to buy, they sit an in. higher than all the other years. Had a 1993 land cruiser for 14 years, great but sucked gas. This 4run get 17 21 town/highway. Will cruise 90 mph all day long. No oil usage or leaks 285.75 /16 tires & spring spacers & it looks ready for anything, great for anywhere.

  • Great over all vehicle to drive - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

The toyota 4Runner 4dr 4wd limited is a dependable vehicle that I have owned and does very well in the winter snow. The leather seats are very comfortable. The amount of space is great for all kinds of storage from front to back, better than the new 4Runners.

Good one the road and highway. Feels like a truck but gives you the SUV feel.

  • Poor Performance, Nice Looks - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

The 4runner is an overall good SUV, but lacks the performance needed for some situations. If you are a car company and want to put an SUV in your line-up, make sure you compensate for the people that use it for highway use...in lain-mans terms, give it more balls.

  • Sleeper - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

This is my 4th Toyota and may prove to be the best vehicle I have ever, or will ever own. Make no mistake, this is a light truck chassis. It rides and handles like a box on frame pick up truck. I had to replace the starter motor right after the warranty ran out. Irritating, but thats the only problem the thing has ever had. A service at 78K miles indicated that the original brake pads and shoes were only 40% worn, and I drive hard. It would be a fine family hauler with its stock 180 or so horsepower as long as you dont mind the truck like ride. I added a TRD Supercharger and Exhaust System which has made a huge difference when entering the freeway.

  • Great car, until... - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I loved this car until yesterday the engine popped. I was amazed that a Toyota brand cars engine would blow at 140,000 miles. Apparently, 4Runner engines made between 1999-2001 (according to our Toyota dealership sources) made very bad engines that blew. Toyota didnt advertise this, so new car buyers had no idea. I now have a great car with no engine. I wish I would have known that their engines were bad during those years.

  • very comfortable, so-so mileage - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Bought my 99-4Runner SR5 4WD used in 1/00 w/24k miles for $28k. Have replaced tires, brakes, spark plugs @ 65k. The 4Runner is an adequate compromise between my prev. vehicles: Toyota pickup STD cab (utility) & Dodge Intrepid ES (looks & performance). Sound system & speakers are above average w/excellent tweeter positioning. 4WD works well in MN winters. I like the height of the vehicle. Makes moving in-out of car traffic easy. Synching infant & toddler car seats are adequate w/help of pre-tensioner belts.
