This Year's Model Updates:

The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.

Pros:
  • Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
Cons:
  • These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

  • Happy Story with a Certified Used car - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

The 4Runner is an old design, so its ride could be smoother, but it is very quiet and comfortable on the hiway. This is my first Toyota, and I now see why their sales are increasing so rapidly. We bought it as a Certified Used Car with 41K on it, we now have 56K, havent had a reason to take it back to the dealer.

  • Built To Last - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I love this truck, and with 187,000 miles on it, I have never had a problem with it. If the routine maintenance is kept up, these things will last forever. After all these years, it still looks great, and puts the newer body style to shame. Interior has held up extremely well, and all the electronics still work perfectly. The engine is still strong, for the period it was built, and the transmission still shifts like it was brand new! Great, great vehicle. I just wish it was a little bigger in the front seating area, but I am 65", so it just wasnt built for 90% sized people.

  • Love my 4Runner - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I love it! There is plenty of room to throw my bike gear and head for the trails, or pack up my daughters luggage and head out on the road. I wish I had gotten the four-wheel drive though. When it snows or is icy (doesnt happen much in Memphis, but it does happen) it tends to get stuck. Very embarrassing. Had to take my fiances front-wheel drive Buick Regal everywhere at Christmas. My only real complaint with the 4Runner is the gas mileage. I hope Toyota comes out with a Hybrid for the 4Runner.

The vehicle has met and surpassed my expectations. Purchased new it has had no mechanical problems up to the current 55,000. It is comfortable, classy looking and flexible enough to serve as a passenger car, a "pick-up" for larger loads and yet small enough to fit in most spots. This is a fantastic car!

1999 4Runner SR5 (2WD, 3.4 V6) bought less than six months ago with 95k miles on it. When I test drove it I could not believe how tight (new feeling) everything was for a six year old vehicle with close to a 100k miles on it. The only problems were the power antena didnt work (broken mast, easy fix) and the starter tended to stick. Being a paranoid person, I put it in the shop on day one of owning it to have a complete tune up of all systems as well as a new timing belt, starter, and water pump (since they were at it anyway when replacing the timing belt) Ive driven it an additional 10,000 miles since buying it with not a single problem. So far its the best vehicle Ive ever owned.

  • Reliablity galore! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I bought the 99 used in 2004. Ive been driving for almost 2 years now and no problems! (clock wire is loose, no biggie). Still has great pickup, especially in 1st and 2nd gears! 4WD is great in the snow. One of the best riding/reliable vehicles Ive ever owned. This sucker will run to 200k miles without a doubt (currently only at 60k).

  • 4 Runner for Reliability - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

great for long trips, vehicle is heavy and holds to the road well. In town it is a little cumbersome to handle because of its size, I wish the interior was just a little larger. If you are looking for gas mileage the 4 runner would not be for you. Comfort is great and I will continue to own one for the reliability.

  • Love this Car! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

We ended up getting this car during our hunt for an economical vehicle. Style and dependability won out and we ended up with the 4runner. Now we are still going to buy a hybrid, but we love this car. It drives great and I still feel in control. My last car was a Mercedes 560 SL, so I am used to a lot of power, but this car works like a dream, and will keep on kicking for many years to come.

  • 7 Year old vehicle outperform some 06 s - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Offroad capabilty: excellent it only needs a back up camera and GPS in your dash and you are ready to have serious fun. Onroad driving: marvelous, like a medium sedan. MPG: poor, but its worth every penny I spent. I installed Bi-xenon and looks awesome, besides it turns day light, great headlight design. Sound: Just add sub-woofers and the premium sound system does the rest. The last name of Toyota is "reliability".
