This Year's Model Updates:

The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.

Pros:
  • Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
Cons:
  • These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

  • Best SUV - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I bought this toyota at the end of july of this year. Let me tell you that I am so glad I held out for a 4Runner. I love the ride. It fun to drive. I use to own a Pathfinder before buying this. This vehicle is a far superior vehicle to any other SUV out there. I love it. I would buy another one!

This is one of the best vehicles I have owned. The SUV looks awesome, the relibility is top notch and its a very comfortable family cruiser which handles the road very well whether its in the city or on the highway. The climate control in this vehicle works extremely well.

This, in my opinion is one of the greatest all-purpose vehicles ever created. It is an absolutely fantastic, drama-free truck that rolls easily down the road, and is capable of crushing the deep mountain snows that fall in our area. Ive got over 145k miles on mine, and she asks only for new brakes every couple of years, and a new battery every 4 or 5 years. The build quality is incredible. 16 years old and not one rip in the leather interior. Fuel mileage is kind of poor (avereage about 17 mpg), but incredibly low cost maintenance makes up for that and more.

This has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It is extremely dependable. I have never had a mechanical problem in the 5+ years Ive owned it. A little more room in the backseat would be nice. Its a little small for travel.

Since I bought this SUV in 1999 I have had NO problems with it. I change the oil every 3K and it runs like the day I bought it. In 70+K miles I only changed the front brakes once. I did have to replace the catalitic converters because Jiffy Lube F-uped a fuel injector clening service but they were covered by warranty. now I only take it to the dealer for service.

  • Great vehicle to own & drive.!! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Ive owned this 4 runner for 8 months now & have enjoyed every minute of the driving experience. This is the perfect vehicle for me as I love to camp/fish,etc so theres plenty of room for all sorts of equipment. (Ive only used the roof rack once.) This vehicle performs great on mountain roads,on dirt tracks & in wet/snowy conditions, giving confidence to the driver. Very dependable too, Ive had no problems thus far with just basic "do it yourself" maintenance. In my humble opinion, you could do a lot worse than buying a Toyota 4 Runner.

Purchased the 4Runner new in November 1998. Now have 93,000 miles on it. Required a new starter at 65,000 miles but no other problems at all. All the bells and whistles still work as new. Typical exceptional Toyota reliability, comforable on the the road yet very capable off road. I like the styling of the 99 better than the new models.

  • Roll-over rate - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

My 4Runner rolled over in two separate accidents in moderate inclement weather; both times sedan-style cars drove through the same conditions right in front of me with no problems. The problem with their AWD is you must disengage it above 60 mph - makes it tedious to constantly be turning it on and off unlike other models that have AWD all-the-time. Be careful with this vehicle - can be a death trap.

  • I love my 4Runner - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I have only owned my 4Runner for almost 6 months and have only driven it for 3 months but I love it so far. Its so comfy and has no blind spots and the leather seats are so comfortable.
