This Year's Model Updates:

The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.

Pros:
  • Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
Cons:
  • These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

  • I love my 4runner! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I love my 4runner. Its fun to drive, is very reliable, has had minimal problems and overall has been the best car purchase Ive ever made. Mine has almost 165K miles and still runs wonderfully. A great buy, Id reccomend a 4runner to anyone!

  • Still a great vehicle - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I posted a review back in November of last year after owning my 4Runner for six months. Its been four months since and I have nothing new to say other than this is by far the best vehicle Ive ever owned. Ive owned it for ten months now and it still blows my mind at how well this thing was made. Its now seven years old with over 110k miles on it and everything is functioning fine. I love the 4Runner more and more each day. I got it for a really good price when I bought it and worry that Ill never find another deal like it on my next Toyota (which is what Im sticking with). Those Japanese designers have their stuff together thats for sure.

  • My 4x4 SR5 4Runner is great! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Bought it used in 2007 with 130000 miles at a used car lot. Now has 18xxxx miles. Still runs strong. As long as you do the regular maintenance. This 4runner will run forever. The cloth interior is still great as I put a cushion on driver seat, a dash cover keeps the dash from cracking. The blue paint still shines as it is always garaged. Only used 4WD once in a muddy situation. The only drawback is the engine is kind of weak in this day and age IMO.

  • a 9 year love affair - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I have dealer-maintained this vehicle for 9 years and have never had to fix anything outside of the regular maintance every 3000 miles. I have bought tires twice since purchasing the vehicle but other than that it runs like a charm. I love the inside of the 4Runner. The leather is soft & comfortable and cleans well. The sunroof is huge and slides back inside the roof. The back window rolling down is a feature Ive not found in any other vehicle. Thanks to Toyota not changing the body style very often my 9 year old truck still looks like a newer vehicle. I have never owned a car for 9 years before but Ive found no reason to give it up other than wanting another one.

The car is reliable, sturdy and uses regular gasoline. Easy to handle.

  • 4Runners Are Worth Every Penny - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

No problems whatsoever; this is my 2nd 4Runner (1st was a 95); I chose this one based on it reliability (of course), increased interior & engine sizes & increased safety rating. After comparing all other SUVs in this class, the 4Runner exceeded the rest. While the HP is less than American models, the 4Runner more than makes up for it with its reliability, comfort & safety ratings. The highest HP wasnt a priority for me.

Ive had such good luck with my Runner that my friends are looking into the Toyota line. It runs tough and handles the roads in Charlotte like a champ. My fuel economy is average (17 mpg). My overall experience is excellent and I recommend this SUV to any one looking for a tough, reliable vehicle. Good luck shopping because they cost but well worth the money.

  • Great off-road vehicle - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

The 1999 Toyota 4Runner SR5 4x4 (with automatic transmission) is simply the best stock SUV I have seen for off-road use. It is so light that it tends to skim across the surface of mud with the 4x4 engaged, rather than sinking like a Tahoe. It is narrow, so it can make it through skinny trails. It has high ground clearance and skid plates on key components, so it less likely to get damaged. It has a relatively short wheel base (which combined with the high ground clearance and removing the running boards) means it is unlikely to get high centered anywhere, unlike a Suburban. Any it is still very reliable after 115,000 miles.

  • 260,000 miles. Amazed it is so strong. - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I just purchased a 1999 4Runner Limited with 260K on the odometer. I had driven many Toyotas and Subarus prior to this purchase. The interior shows wear but the drive and the ride are amazing. I live in Florida and this machine has never been in the snow/salt of the cold north. My plan is to fix and repair as needed. I am amazed that this truck feels so new. The only thing that needs fixed/replaced is the climate control module. It is intermittent.

  • Bought 1999 in 2003 - 1999 Toyota 4Runner
    By -

I bought a 1999 Limited 4WD in 2003. I went to the dealership looking to buy a new 4runner, and couldnt bring myself to pay $35,000 for the newer model after driving the 1999.I bought a certified used 4runner and purchased the extended 100,000 warranty. I only had one problem mechanically with this vehicle and it was totally covered under the extended warranty. Since purchasing and seeing all the new 4runners, I wanted to trade just for the new body style, but cant get the comfortable feeling like I have in the 1999. Overall I love this vehicle, but will try another dealership next time.
