This Year's Model Updates:

The 4Runner receives a number of upgrades this year, starting with a new and improved four-wheel-drive system equipped with a center differential and featuring a full-time 4WD mode in addition to the current two-high, four-high and four-low modes. New exterior features include a front bumper redesign, multireflector headlamps and an enhanced sport package with fender flares and a hood scoop on the SR5 model. Inside, a new center console/cupholder design will improve beverage-carrying capacity of the 4Runner and an automatic climate control system will be featured on the Limited models.

Pros:
  • Powerful and reliable with more luxury options than ever before.
Cons:
  • These things cost bucks! The new Grand Cherokee is even more rugged and still offers plenty of luxury for less money.

This is my first car, Im 16 years old, and I love it! It handles incredibly well, is fun to drive, and has an especially good driving position. Its not too small, just big enough, a perfect car for anyone. Kind of a gas guzzler, but still, a great car. I highly recommend it to anyone!

Outstanding. We purchased the SR5 for my wife, and replaced the cloth seating with after market leather that looks and feels like the factory installed Leather on the 4Runner Limited. We also added a 2 stage heating element to the drivers seat for those cold winter days. Nice!

I have been in possession of this car since its had 150 thousand miles and ive had no major issues with it. Basic maintence and repairs that come with the mileage that I have been able to do myself have kept me happy.

The 4Runner is have is a 4 cylinder inline 150HP engine. It run well but I wish it would be a V6. Fuel economy is not excellent, not far from what the V6 will do, with a lot less power. Quality wise is superb, It bounces a lot in the city driving, but is very comfortable and smooth in the highway. Its a good deal for the money and extremely reliable.

Bought with 20k miles now have 155k. I would buy a Toyota again. Probably not a 4runner just because of the gas mileage 15/18. My water pump went out twice before 100k, dealer said it was a common failure. MAFS went out around 140k. Around 120k the radiator failed internally forcing coolant into the transmission (rare failure), $4500 for new tranny and radiator. Power antenna went out, common failure. Starter contacts wore and needed to be replaced. Coolant line to rear heater broke. Even though it sounds bad, I still like my 4runner. Most failure can be resolved by do it yourselfers with a little research.

I bought my 4Runner new in mid 1999. Love the car! Its sturdy construction gives a sense of security. PLENTY of power.

  • Excellent Ride! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

I have had my Toyota 4Runner since 1999. I have used it in blizzards, sandy beaches and it has never let me down. Althought I have low milage and ti give an example of the quality parts used when building thew truck, I have never replaced the brakes, I have tuned it only one time and only kept it in normal maintance. Its a very smooth ride, one I will never get rid of!

  • Still Luvin after All These Years! - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

This is my second 4Runner and I simply love this model. Reliable and Adaptable are two words that describe my overall relationship with my 4Runner... neither of my 4Runners have ever broken down on me, and theyll carry whatever the heck I can throw in the back or tie on the roof! I get about 23 mph when using my Cruise Control, so I use it as much as possible! I love the tight turning radius and sitting high enough to see whats ahead and around me, but low enough so it takes corners well. Ive got 146k mi. and it runs like it did when I first bought it at 9k mi. No wonder these used 4Runners are hard to come by! Theyre like Loyal Friends -- you never want to let them go! :-D

  • Another Lemon - 1999 Toyota 4Runner

This is the second 4Runner I have bought in about 10 years, the first was a 96 which i bought new as a base 4x4 model, and it was a horrible lemon, clutch replaced 4 times by 30,000 miles. Smoke, all kinds of problems. I then bought a Tahoe, and loved it, but my wife couldnt drive it because of size. So i sold it and bought this 99 4Runner Limited 4x4, this one had 60,000 miles on it, and is just as big a piece of junk, the emergency brake light keeps flashing, the truck doesnt idle right in the cold, it smokes, the tranny jerks when put in gear, bad brakes, etc. Wouldnt buy another unless it was one of the new designed 4runners with the V8s.
