This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru completely redesigns the Impreza and brings a high-performance turbocharged WRX variant into the fold to offer enthusiasts the opportunity to drive a powerful, all-wheel-drive sport sedan without breaking the bank. All Imprezas benefit from improvements in performance, refinement and safety. Along with the Impreza's trip upmarket come revised trim levels consisting of two sedans (WRX and 2.5 RS) and three wagons (WRX, Outback Sport and 2.5 TS Sport Wagon). The coupe body style has been dropped.

Pros:
  • A stout 227 horsepower in the WRX, all-wheel drive, a variety of sedans and wagons to choose from.
Cons:
  • No more coupe, extroverted styling may be too much for some.

  • Fast and Fun Hauler - 2002 Subaru Impreza

I bought my WRX Wagon for its rally bred performance. Since then I had a kid and it has turned into a family wagon but when my son isnt in the car its a sports car again. I can haul lots of stuff and have used it to move twice. I had a lease but just decided to buy out the lease and keep it. After all it is still a Subaru. Feels like it will last forever.

  • 2 head gaskets at 20k - 2002 Subaru Impreza

At 2 yrs old developed small oil drops leaks 20k miles. At 3yrs started to drip coolant on driveway and oil drops. Dealer would not cover this fix because Subaru claimed only the Forester has bad gaskets but they asked me for my VIN any way. They gave me a bottle of head gasket sealer for 2$ and told me they were going to charge me $3500 for new gasket replacement. The very fact that the dealer even stocked(sealant) and basically gave it to me indicated that they have a widespread problem. It did not work. Used Bars Stop Leak instead. 2014 75k add coolant twice a week and code (Knock) triggered prob due to worn bearings from water in oil.

  • Nice Car - 2002 Subaru Impreza

This is the best car on the market. The acceralation in this vehicle is insane. The desgin on the interior and exterior is real nice. There is still room for personalizing. The only thing that would make this car any more awesome than it is is more torque and horsepower.

  • OK car, not great but good - 2002 Subaru Impreza

I typically put around 225,000 on my cars before I let them go. Some limp in (escort), make it like champs (prelude), this one is somewhere in between. Not many problems, but the ones I had were odd. Catalytic converter at 50 K mi, head gasket at 150 K, oil pump shortly thereafter. Windshield keeps breaking, seemingly by itself. Fog lamps are expensive and break a lot. I gave up and drive with them broken. I like this car and would consider another one because it is a kick to drive. But our legacy outback is a much, much better car. Edmunds says it gets 21, but I typically get 26, a little less with city alone. 28 if I am gentle.

  • Nice, safe car - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Bought this used when our Saturn gave out at 30,000 miles and would cost more to fix then it was worth. Anyway, after 8,000 miles,we like it as much as when we test drove it. Interior parts are a little cheap, but this is one solid car. In fact, Saab is rebadging them.

This car rocks. I consider myself a car enthusiast at the age of 25. This car was in my budget limits, and there is nothing out there that comes close to the value that you get out of this car. 227 hp, AWD, FUNNN!

  • Good, but needs improvements - 2002 Subaru Impreza

This is a fun car...but its hard to call it a real performance car. The suspension is too soft, the tires are too skimpy, and the shifter is too balky. For performance driving, the engines great, but around town its a bugaboo...with only 2.0 liters of displacement and a low 8:1 compression ratio, this engine is gutless until the turbo kicks in around 3k RPM. The interior is pretty mediocre, with lots of hard plastic, but build qualitys good and there are no major ergonomic flaws. Stereos bad, though...too heavy on bass and all the sound gets squished together. Hard to tell instruments apart! Still a good performance value for the money, though.

Thinking about getting the sedan? Think again--the wagon is the exact same except you can actually haul things! Extremely fun when the boost kicks in, and then the turbo just doesnt stop. Handling is perfect.

  • After 17000 miles - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Ive had my WRX wagon for over 17,000 miles now...those ar TROUBLE-FREE miles!. I must admit (dont tell my wife!) that I love this car as much as the day I picked it up at Mastro Subaru in Tampa. It is the epitome of the Beach Boys song...fun, fun, fun. The automatic does have the much talked about turbo-lag, but to me, it is not a problem; this is a great, comfortable everyday driver that is practical...30 bags of mulch and a basketball set!

  • Just a 2.5RS... nothing special - 2002 Subaru Impreza

I really do LOVE my car. Its fun to drive, it got me through my first real winter (snow, ice, slush) in a new place, and its never had any problems due to regular wear and tear (regular maint. is done). Though not a WRX, acceleration is just fine for highway driving. I used to take my car through a very deserted canyon road with tight turns on the weekends and it begged for more.
