This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru completely redesigns the Impreza and brings a high-performance turbocharged WRX variant into the fold to offer enthusiasts the opportunity to drive a powerful, all-wheel-drive sport sedan without breaking the bank. All Imprezas benefit from improvements in performance, refinement and safety. Along with the Impreza's trip upmarket come revised trim levels consisting of two sedans (WRX and 2.5 RS) and three wagons (WRX, Outback Sport and 2.5 TS Sport Wagon). The coupe body style has been dropped.

Pros:
  • A stout 227 horsepower in the WRX, all-wheel drive, a variety of sedans and wagons to choose from.
Cons:
  • No more coupe, extroverted styling may be too much for some.

  • good value vs. Audi/BMW/Lexus - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Fun car to drive. Noise level on highway as low as Audi/Acura/VW for $5k less. Driver seat comfortable on 40 minute test drive with HUGE side bolsters. Absorbs road shocks well for this class. Short throw shifter is a bit notchy and shift from 1st to 2nd takes some muscle.

To Keep it simple heres what I did to make the car as good as it should have been from the factory. 1. Get rid of the horrible Potenzas they ruin the cars potential 2. Get a K&N this simple change for $40.00 makes a tremendous difference. Eg. at 1800 RPM I make about 5 PSI in the turbo, by 2500 I have reached Peak Pressure. Some handling problems in my car stem from an under achieving rear Limited slip, it behaves as an open diff would especialy when stuck in the snow. Changing tires greatly improves the overall feel.

I bought this car used, maybe that was the first mistake. The second week I had it, something was wrong with the transimission. Two months later something was wrong with the engine. A month later, the same problem came back because the dealership didnt fix it the first time. Now, the transmission needs to be fix, again. I take very good care of this car, yet it falls apart easily. I dont race it (cause Id lose) and I dont floor it every time I drive. It should not be falling apart so much. I would not recommend this car considering youll be looking for alternative transportation since itll be in the shop every other week.

Redid the motor (cylinder slap), rear suspension, along with O2 sensor and to top it off the radio craps out. Wheel wells easily pack with snow and the tires go out of balance with a little dust.

Have had problems with the brakes, fuel line, the clutch problem everyone reported, interior buzzing noises make me crazy, windows seem like they are going to fall out when cold, driver floormat binds behind pedals, heater is poor, cd player defective and had to be replaced. And that is within only 13000 miles! Performance is good only when turbo kicks in, otherwise its just a 4 banger.

  • Too much buck, not enough bang - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Owned mine for a year and it was a piece of crap. It had problems with everything from the suspension (5 times), ECU, exhaust, windows, interior falling apart, fan rattling. Got to a point where I was dealing with the regional representative on every visit. No mods, just a junk build. Major turbo lag and significant lack of low end power. Terrible experience. Some owners get mad when reading this, but I too drooled over the release of the WRX. If the quality isnt there, it just doesnt cut it. Run away from this purchase and shop for something else. Lost tremendous amount on it after only a year.

  • Good car that wont last - 2002 Subaru Impreza

I owned my outback sport for almost 7 years. I bought it brand new. Initially, I though I couldnt get more car for the money. Power everything, cruise control and the AWD Subaru is famous for. All those things I loved and made the car fun to drive. What I didnt like was the engine noise I started hearing about 2 years into ownership. It wasnt strong our pronounced right off the bat, but grew that way over the years. I was under the assumption that changing my oil religiously would preserve my engine. Even that didnt keep it from the engine problems that are common for this model year. Id be more specific, but I only have 500 characters. I will never buy another Subaru again.

  • This 2002 Subaru was a LEMON - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Problems from the start. Poor paint quality (orange peel and easily scratches), inadequate electrical system which couldnt keep battery charged if a few electrical loads were on, consistently hesitated at 2,000 RPM. Dealership was fantastic but Subaru head office resisted doing anything. In the end, received a refund. Now driving a 2003 model which drives well but paint is still poor quality, Windshield wiper blades freeze, inadequate heating system, poor design of rear window washer spray head, steering wheel not aligned parallel when driving straight.

  • Ok but not very refined - 2002 Subaru Impreza

Timing belt tensior went out at 10500 miles. Intermittent clutch shudder that has worsened with increasing milage. Difficulty with getting dealers to do warranty work. Or admitting the car has a problem

  • Never Buying Subaru AGAIN - 2002 Subaru Impreza

For the first three years car was great. Then at 60,000 miles the head gasket went. For the next 9 months in and out the shop for over heating problems. Then Subaru gave me a new engine block. Now at 90,000 miles transmission problems; needs 1st 2nd third and reverse gears replaced. $2300. In a manual. I never driven it hard -- I wanted it to last, but as you can see its a piece of junk. I bought the car brand for their reputation. Once I get the car back I am selling it and buying a Toyota, Nissan or Mazda.
