This Year's Model Updates:

Kia joins the minivan rumble with the introduction of the Sedona, the lowest-priced minivan in America. Standard on the Sedona are such niceties as air conditioning, power windows, cruise control and auto on/off headlights. Upscale EX models get a CD player, interior wood trim and power front seats. All Sedonas benefit from Kia's impressive Long Haul Warranty with drivetrain protection for 10 years or 100,000 miles.

Pros:
  • Unbeatable price, attractive array of standard goodies, great warranty package.
Cons:
  • Missing some key minivan features, engine could use more power.

  • My Sedona - 2002 Kia Sedona

Purchased my Sedona the Saturday before Christmas, currently have 8450 miles with no problems. Great ride and plenty of power. Why pay 6 or 7 thousand dollars more for another brand of van? All kinds of goodies for your buck. My EX listed for 22,456 was able to buy for 21,500. Also runs on regular unleaded, unlike some of the others. Highly recommended!

An interesting vehicle. Very heavy, and drives smoothly and comfortably as befits a heavy. Gas mileage suffers a bit as a result (a real 20). Drivetrain is outstandingly smooth and powerful - surprisingly so. 195 horses and a FIVE speed automatic contribute to that. ABS brakes feel a bit spongy but work fine. Handling is quite neutral, with pronounced torque steer only when accelerating hard. Interior is well laid out and comfortable and only a bit cramped for very big drivers. Its an enormous amount of van for the money.

  • Brand New! - 2002 Kia Sedona

After test driving the Toyota, Honda and KIA, talking with all the dealerships, researching, and seeing the reviews on this site, in my AAA magazine and Consumer Reports Auto Issue,we were convinced to try the KIA, especially with the warranty they have and the safety rating. We got a fully loaded EX for only $21,000 total- everything. We could only hope for 1/4 of the items we wanted/needed on a Toyota and Honda at $22K.Weve had our Kia for less than a full week, but I love it and am glad we made the decision to buy it. The 3.5L/V6 engine is snappy(its only a 3.0 on the Toyota ya know),its quiet, comfortable, and smooth. So far,so good.

  • Dont Do It - 2002 Kia Sedona

I purchased this vehicle because of the price & now know I would have been WAY better off to pay more for a better brand. A/C has been fixed 2 times & it took 3 trips to dealer to diagnose bad evaporator. It made horrible noises & needed a crank shaft pulley replaced. Also, the windshield cracked with no sign of impact...another complaint Ive seen in other reviews. Worst of all, it has begun to rust. It was repaired once & now is rusting again in another spot. When I called Kia to request help getting rid of my lemon, they told me to use the state lemon law...in other words, they wouldnt do anything on their own, it had to be legally.

I have owned the car for 18 months it has been in the shop for cracked windshield, new radiator fan, new cat converter, blown speakers, lose passenger floorboard... IT has never been fixed when promised. I was verbaly attacked by my service manager for a negative review of service (go figure)the first 30k service is $600.00 the spark plugs last only 30k and cost $25.00 each. Next time its Honda or Toyota

  • Worth the savings?? - 2002 Kia Sedona

Price over all else was the the deciding factor in this purchase. The moment we drove the van off the dealer lot the "check engine" light was on. After three trips and three weeks in their service department, the problem was fixed. There have been other problems as well including: Oil leaks, intermittent A/C clutch noise, loose rear-view mirror and numerous squeeks and rattles (nine months of ownership and six trips to the service department). I would gladly add $50-$100 to my monthly payment to be driving a Honda or Toyota. remember, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!.

  • 18 trips/2yrs/"the little things" - 2002 Kia Sedona

Love the power of the engine, hate all the little things. Kia is not open on Saturday...duh, this really makes you angry when you have to take off work to get all of the little things fixed. List of things: battery (2x) , visor, wipers (3x), broken seat, window off track, door slider broken, (just to name the ones I can think of immedietley!

  • Dont Buy KIA - 2002 Kia Sedona

We have had nothing but problems with our Kia. We have had it in the dealership 3 times because the A/C wont blow cold air, not to mention that it moans loudly. Numerous times it has been seen for electrical wiring problems which keep running our battery down. The exterior paint is coming off the chrome which is rusting. The black strip around the windows is fading and it looks really worn. The worst part is that we have to keep dealing with the Kia service department which is less than cooperative.

  • One Great Van - 2002 Kia Sedona

I love my new van. I used to own a 00 Ford Expedition. It was a gas guzzling nuisance. I test drove the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Crysler T&C, Ford Windstar and the Mazda MPV and was pretty close to buying one of those but was never enthused about any of them. I cam across Kia because my mother bought a Volvo and Kia was right next to it. I figured what the hech and went to test drive one, I signed the dotted line that day. Loved it the first time I rode in it. Price was never the reason I purchased since my two previous vehicles were at the 38K mark. I just loved it!

This has been an average van. I knew going in that gas mileage would be bad, and it is ... about 16-17 mpg in mixed driving. Highway we get about 19. Interior is okay; my wife bought it because of leather seats and cheap price. Flexibility, however, is compromised because of very heavy third-row seats that do not fold flat. Reliability has been okay. Check engine light has come on a few times and the alternator went out at 42,000 miles. I think the transmission is starting to go. When colder than about 25, it hesitates before going into gear ... revs like it was in neutral. A/C fixed twice. All except the transmission have been fixed under warranty. Well keep it to 100k as long as repairs are free.
