Overview & Reviews
A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.
- Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
- Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

Drivin a Jeep and Lovin It - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Minke4 - September 4 - 10:00 amJust bought a 2001 Grand Cherokee 60th Anniversary Ed. and absolutely love it. Only one problem. Brakes. Had rotors and pads replaced at 37,000. Ride comfort is superb in front seats and rear. Controls are easy to figure out and easy to use. Love the radio controls on the wheel. Road noise is moderate and has a nice hum. Offroad capabilities are amazing for a lux ute.

Stay Away from the 2001 Grand Cherokee - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Never, Ever, Again!! - July 15 - 6:33 amBought this vehicle new. I have replaced almost everything including the transmission at 103,000 miles. Jeep/Chrysler should fall off the face of the earth. Im waiting for my 3rd window regulator to break. I have a standing appointment every two weeks with the repairman to have my Jeep fixed. I will hold my head up high as I return to buying vehicles from Japan and Korea. Chrysler should give up making automobiles. It is embarrassing to the USA!

Reliable: afraid not - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By unhappy in Utah - May 24 - 10:00 amAt 8000 miles rotors needed turning, at 16000 rotors were replaced, at 36000 rotors needed turning. Window lift drivers side @ 18000; heavy shifting-firmware replacement-still bad; Both seat heaters replaced; starter motor at 36000; hood lifts at 36000; power steering at 38000; radio power intermittant--no fix; excess side slip. Cost of ownership and depreciation is outragous.

Not bad, but not excellent either - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By unlimited problems - May 13 - 10:00 amA great SUV with a turning radius that is unbelievable. The power from the 4.7 is smooth and torquey. Have had some problems though. Had the brake rotors replaced once already and the fuel pump. Also something with the struts I believe. The car tows well and the mileage is decent.

Never a Jeep again - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By xrt - May 10 - 2:00 amIt is my first time( and for sure my last) to buy a Chrysler product. I bought the car in june, 2001 new. I had lots of problems with it: serpentine belt was replaced, tenssioner was replaced, steering column was replaced, brakes roaters were replaced two times, bad paint spot on the door, molding around the wind sheeld needed to be re-glued, the oil pupm was replaced, a valve in the transmission body was replaced, side mirros were replaced. The most annoying thing is these issues were never resolved by the first or the second or even the third visit. It is a nightmare dealing with the dealership I deeply regret my experinece. BUYERS BE AWARE

Very enjoyable - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By James Nichols - March 29 - 3:56 pmWe bought the vehicle used, 1 year old. It now has 65k miles on it and have had 2 problems up to date. I had to replace the driver side window regulator. Plastic piece broke. New piece made with metal. Recirc door for the a/c had to be fixed. New piece supposed to be an upgraded fix. Neither problem overly expensive.

Do Not BUY - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Notagain - February 2 - 10:00 amA reliability nightmare. Three fuel pumps have been replaced. Complete transmission overhaul @ 69,000K, heated seats do not work, brake problems, etc. etc. I should know better--had same problems on my 1999 which I just sold. Jeep can not build a reliable vehicle and Carmax is so busy because of all the needed repairs it takes two weeks to get an appointment so they can attempt repairs.

Do. Not. Buy. A. Jeep. - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Anonymous - January 13 - 4:13 pmWe bought a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee after doing A LOT of research, and the in-line 6 was supposed to be darn-near bulletproof. We had such bad luck with my wifes last car, we researched which SUV to get, and this one came up time and time again. We bought it. Long story short, the reviews were so good on Jeep Grand Cherokees because people were writing reviews on the 1st gen. GCs (the 1992-1999 versions). These were awesome! However, somewhere around 1998 or so, Jeep STOPPED building the motors and production was turned over to Chrysler. We spent about $18k on this SUV, and we ended up putting about $4k - $5k worth of motors in this car. This car buried us in debt because as soon as we paid it off, we needed another motor. Wed have to get a lien against the car to buy a motor. Once that motor was paid off, it would blow again. I was religious about oil changes and maintenance, but it didnt matter. I was so happy to get rid of this car last year for $500. I will NEVER buy a Jeep/Chrysler again, and I advice that you do not either.
