This Year's Model Updates:

Volkswagen offers two generations of the Jetta for sale in 1999. The third-generation Jetta has been around since 1993, and it is a carryover for 1999. VW deletes the GT, K2 and GLS models from the lineup, leaving only the GL, GLX, TDI and Wolfsburg models. Later in the model year, the company introduces a completely redesigned Jetta with a smooth new European body, improved versions of the base inline four and the VR6 and a simplified lineup of GL, GLS and GLX models. If you can hold out for a 2000 model, VW will offer a 150-hp 1.8-liter turbo for the GLS.

Pros:
  • Fun to drive, comfortable ride, available VR6, solid construction, rich interior materials, lots of standard features, generous 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Cons:
  • Some controls hard to decipher, CD player should be standard, expensive compared with other compact sedans.

Pushing 100,000 miles, no mechanical problems, everything works well, still tight, holding up well.

This was a reliable and fun car. I never had any mechanical problems whatsoever. The only electrical issue i ran into was of course the window regulator and the instrument cluster. I loved the sound system and the body style most about the car. Sadly my wife was in a wreck which totaled my jetta, whats amazing is she had no injuries. The safety features were on point. Overall i would say say its a decent car to own!

  • Instant Gratification - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Im a 21 year old girl that always wanted a VW Jetta. Little did i know, they suck! After the first week of having it my front bumper started falling off. My car has been in the shop since day 1. I love the way the car looks but its not the most practical car. Ive had so many problems such as, catalytic converter, trans, alternator, belts, a/c, ABS, etc. The inside of the car is junk. Everything falls off or apart. Have fun if you decide to buy this car!

  • Great Fun Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I travel alot and love how this car handles. The 5 speed shift makes it fun to drive. After 4 years, the purple lighted dash board still gets alot of oohs and ahhs. I have owned alot of VWs over the years and for the price, I think it is a great value.

  • VW Cannot Build a Reliable Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

Its sad I cannot give this car a positive review. Yes its fun to drive and yes its nicely appointed. However, this car has been a constant source of pain for my wife and me. Beginning the first year, the check engine light came on. Having the dealer examine it under warranty, no worries. But, as expected, 2 months after the warranty expired, the mass air sensor had to be replaced for a cost of over $400.00. While VW has admitted known issues with this part, other consistent failures have apparently existed such as issues with ignition coils and fuel injectors. All failures point to wiring issues. They made a dreadful judgement in error and built these in Mexico. Shame on VW!

  • Saved my life - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

About four days ago I was in a head on collision with a Chevy Suburban in a canyon. I walked away with glass shards in my arm and that is it. My friend who was in the passenger seat walked away without a scratch. Even the highway patrolman said the way the car handled the impact is what saved our lives. I loved that car, too bad it is totalled and completely unsalvageable. Thank you Volkswagen for making a car that passengers can feel safe in!

When I bought this car (still under warranty), I had few problems like oxygen sensor not workng, My indicator light sensors not working and the major was catalytic convertor failure. But, volkswagen paid for the catlytic convertor cost. Apart from it, I really never had any major breakdowns. So far so good. I want to kepp it till its wheels falls off. Lets see how it goes.

  • Buy a Honda - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

This is the worst car Ive ever owned. Almost every interior feature has broken, Ive replaced a major engine part annually, and the warranty is a joke. Yes, it handles well, and yes, the bodys nice, but beyond that this car has nothing to offer. Unless you want a car thats expensive to maintain and constantly in the shop, buy a Honda.

  • Good Car - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I really like this car. It has a good mix of features, fuel mileage, and handling for a low price. You do have rattles from time to time but the engine runs very well. My check engine light comes on, but it is only an emmisions indication. Dont worry too much about it, it will go off in a few days after in recalibrates. The windows are not the greatest,, but the car is really fun to drive and I love the fuel economy

  • So far ok..... - 1999 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought this car a few months ago and lucked out with a really nice, 85,000 one owner car. As with all Jettas both front power windows did not work but the dealer I bought it from replaced them for me. The car stinks off the line but is pretty peppy when up to speed, maybe the manuals are better? Had to replace the timing belt and went ahead and replaced the ater pump and serpentine belt. Trust me you WANT to do all this at the same time and try and do it yourself. Parts cost me less than $100, but if you paid someone to do it it would cost you. Fit and finish is good, cup holders are beyond a joke. Ride is good even with me stepping up to 17" wheels.MPG could B better getting 25.
