  • Transmission Problems - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Purchased in Jan. 2016. After a few weeks I noticed a lag/hesitation when I would try to accelerate, followed by erratic transmission shifting. I thought it was part of the breaking in process. The problem got worse. I called Toyota Corp. and they opened a case file. A few days later they called and said no recall had been issued on the vehicle so they would take no corrective action. I had the dealer do several software updates in hopes this would remedy the problems. All efforts were met with negative results. My Tacoma was driving so badly I was concerned I could potentially become involved in a traffic crash so it set parked. On April 1, 2017, I traded in my Tacoma for a 2016 4Runner which runs 100% better than the 35 thousand dollar piece of junk truck that Toyota sold me. Very Disappointing.

  • Tacoma has lost it in 2016!! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

What can I say, I have been a huge Toyota fan for a very long time, until the new 2016 Tacoma came out, I was waiting forever for this truck to happen. Been super excited for this until I drove one, in fact I drove them all. The new 6 and the new 4 cylinder. Both are the worst running motors yet. Super under powered and very loud for what they are. Not to mention the quality of all the materials used in the cab, every button and knob is cheap! The cab noise is something else as well, I am sure it due to the quality of materials. As for looks, they nailed it, great looking truck hands down. Other than that, save your money! Or keep your old Tacoma like me. When I was at multiple dealers testing these, there were buyers over paying left and right for these trucks based on all the hype, mind blowing to me, I was thinking have you driven this??? What a reality check this would be in a week or so after taking it home. Any way, I hope Toyota realizes what they built here and makes a huge change in the future with this brand. I also never wright reviews, but this one was worth my time.

  • Follow-up to my earlier review - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

A few weeks ago I wrote the review "Be Careful and Test Drive". Since then I towed a 5X8 UHaul trailer from Florida to Ohio - approx. 1100 miles. I simply wanted to report that the average mpg dropped from my normal average 20 mpg without towing a trailer to 15.3 mpg with towing the trailer which was full. Quite a drop in mpg evidencing once again the "lugging" problem that I and others have reported. Hopefully Toyota will come out with a fix caused by the engine/transmission defaulting to 6th gear and 1100 RPM. I could barely get up the hills/mountains on I-77 through Virginia and West Virginia without manually shifting. Even my salesman in Colorado where I purchased the vehicle said "this vehicle is not suitable for the Colorado mountains". I should have listened to him.

  • Safety Hazard - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

In all honesty if not for the engine and transmission this would be my favorite truck I have owned. Looks are flawless in my opinion and comfort is what Id expect from a 4x4 truck. But thats the best Ill give it. On day 3 of owning the tacoma my check engine light came on with the most awful vibration. I immediately took it back to the dealer to find out 6 injectors needed to be replaced. While there I reported a bad delay in going from park to drive, and this especially concerned me backing out of my driveway in the mornings going to work, a couple times up to 5 seconds (imagine sitting in the highway 5 seconds stalled). After three visits to the service dept about this they check the transmission fluid to find it is nearly a quart low! This is still within the 1000 miles and they claim they cant reproduce it. I reproduced it in the truck with the mechanic and that still got me no where as "thats normal". As the other reviewers also mentioned the throttle response and shifting is horrible. They are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. Nearly every day I press the gas pedal moderately and it gets hung in the wrong gear, bogs the engine, begins to slow slightly, so I press harder. Suddenly after a few seconds it decides to rev very high and jump into far too low of gear (or out of gear completely) and significantly slows the truck. I completely let off the gas, coast down the highway, and wait for it to shift back in to gear (again stalling in the highway). All while the service manager says the shifting is "normal with these new electronic transmissions". If you dont mind a truck that will stall you in the middle of the road, buy this truck. Otherwise go buy something else. It is obvious from the transmission fluid and characteristics of this transmission this truck never saw a day of quality control or testing.

  • Terrible Seats! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Went to the Toyota Dealership to purchase a Tacoma. Love the looks of the redesign and was ready to but. Test drive lasted 30 seconds. Drivers sea is extremely uncomfortable. Cant imagine sitting in it for more than 15 minutes without experiencing significant back and leg pain. Im 62" 220 lbs. The seat cushion is stationary and does not ratchet up or tilt back. Also the thigh support is none existent! Shame.

  • The illusion of reliability. - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

When you think of the name Toyota one of the first things that may come to mind may be reliability, well the 2016 tacoma is far from that. For having the truck for over a year and now 25k, it is now clear to me that this truck was not ready for its release, Ive had issues with the truck ranging from the transmission delaying to getting several recalls done on a brand new truck, not to mention the current famous recall for a quarter million trucks that has had my truck and thousands of others Tacoma sitting at the dealership for over 2 months. If you do your research make sure you hear it first-hand from actual people who own the truck, websites such as tacomaworld.com are very informative and will give you first-hand reviews coming from actual Tacoma owners who own the truck. Thousands of owners share my disappointment for what the Tacoma could have been, due to its recalls, and problems with the truck and the unfortunate part has been that all of us have been ignored by Toyota about the problems we have been having with the Tacoma because they are still going to sell thousands of them regardless of the customers being unhappy. Do yourself a favor before you buy and really research what people are saying about the Tacoma, not just magazine authors, or professional reviewers.

  • STALL OUT WHILE DRIVING!!! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

This is my 5th Toyota and 3rd TRD off road 4x4. It has stalled out on me 4 times ( once making a left turn and almost got hit) Toyota has had if for a total of 6 weeks of my 10 months of ownership. The last time it was in for 4.5 weeks so the Toyota engineers could look at it and the answer was they tightened some loose connections. I am not feeling real confident with this truck or the Toyota company. Soon as it is lemoned I am most likely buying a Chevy Colorado, only because of Toyota customer service

  • Sorely disappointed in the new TAcoma - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

My wife and I were in the market for a new truck to replace an aging and old 3/4 ton Dodge we no longer needed. We test drove a 3rd gen Tacoma at the local dealership, which after a 20 mile trip decided the truck would be a pretty good replacement for us empty nesters. Good mpg, reliability etc.. Totally drank the Kool Aid. We ordered our TRD-OR 4 dr lb and waited 4 months for it to arrive. We took our first trip- a camping trip that took us over the divide to south western Montana. Not a ton of gear- lightly loaded I would say. We were SHOCKED that to climb the grade the tranny dropped to 4the and 3rd gear, and it redlined the entire uphill climb! Our 100 mile trip to the campsite returned a whopping 16mpg. Stock truck, mostly highway and then 10 offroad. My offroad mpg was better then the highway. That should have been a sign. Then the tranny starting shifting erratically, up-down, up-down.. It would never hold a gear. Took it to the dealer to perform the TSB update on the tranny- service department at first said "No TSB exists". I had to do an internet search and show it to them. TSB flash fixed it for about 500 miles, then it reverted back to erratic shifting. Also- dealer said mpgs "Will get better after 2,000 miles or so".. Third problem- the hood support braces are glued to the hood. 75% of the glue points failed, and my truck had a wavy hood at highway speed. If the sun glint was just right, it was like having a disco ball in the cab. Very annoying. Fourth problem- after 6 months and 14,000 miles the truck differential started howling and moaning. At this point the avg MPG was 16 (yes- 16), even after a long highway trip from Montana to Ohio. The dealer refused to address the hood- they said "Normal Characteristic of the truck", my tranny still shifted erratically and the car was unsuited for long distance travel. We had it. We drove over to the Chevy dealer, test drove a 1500 Silverado with a 6.2L V8 and 8spd tranny and got a decent trade on the Tacoma. No shifting issues, no wavy hood, no groaning differential and Im getting 19mpg on average. Toyota really duffed this Tacoma. Not worth the hype, the price or the hassle.

  • Not happy - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I bought my 2016 TRD off road about 6 months ago and it feels like the transmission shifts way to quick and it seems like the engine cuts out while the transmission is trying to figure out what gear its supposed to be in, lm not happy. The motor seems to be sluggish because of the way it shifts to soon and goes to 6th gear way to quick, so its shifting all the time, hate that, Im ready to get rid of it !!!!!

  • hunk of junk - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Bought mine in oct 2015 and complained about the transmission erratic shifting after a couple days of driving it. After getting the run around from the dealership I called Toyota Customer service. I was told the transmission is working exactly the way it was designed to work. Now I drive a F-150. I have been leasing Tacos for 12 years and 2016 is the worst vehicle I have ever drove. There is nothing good to say about this truck. The engine is weak and sounds like a sewing machine. The transmission is horrific. The seats are so low you might as well sit on the floor. The sunroof rattled and leaked. The bed cover didnt seal and leaked. Entune is worthless, I tell it "go home" and it sends me to IHOP. No power seat, no power rear sliding window, key needed to lock tailgate. Paint scratches when you look at it. Cheap lame fabric on the dash. Horrible on gas, 16 MPGs. Dont buy this over priced lemon.
