I have been driving a 2011 Taco, V6 4.0L engine since 2011. I really wanted the new safety features in the new redesigned 16 Taco. I was very impressed with the new interior, sound system and safety features, e.g. side blindspot mirrors, big backup camera, sonar alert when backing out... But, and its a big but, the hype on the new engine being smaller, with better gas mileage and more powerful is just NOT so. I live in northern AZ in hilly country. I took this new vehicle on an extensive drive around the ups and down of the local terrain; the power of the engine is not good and the transmission was constantly shifting. I constantly had to override the transmission manually. This to me was unbelieveable that any small test drive by Toyota engineers would have seen and felt this problem. Even my wife who was with me commented on how much the tranny was shifting and the lack of power. The previous 4.0L was just adequate for this size truck; putting a smaller engine with less power and a poor performing tranny was just dumb! I dodged a major bullet by listening to my inner voice and rejecting this poor performing Taco before trading in my excellent (I didnt know how good it is) 2011 Taco. Dont buy this vehicle until Toyota fixes these problems. By-the-way this vehicle out the door was around $43K - that my friend is a lot of risk.

  • Vibration Nation - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

The engine is weak compared to the 2nd Generation Tacoma. The transmission shifts erratically, even after the electronic transmission "learns" your driving behaviors. Im averaging 17 MPG gas mileage, despite the 18-20 MPG advertisement. Worst, the 2016 is plagued by several vibration problems. First, a driveline vibration/shudder on acceleration. This was a vexing problem with the the Tacoma since 2005. And Toyotas Chief Engineer Mike Sweers claims they completely eliminated this problem in the 2016. Nope. Its still there. Now add to the 2016 a strong buzzing vibration that transmits through the steering wheel and gas pedal on acceleration. This wasnt there on previous Tacomas Ive owned before 2016. The buzzing traverses through your skin and clothes (not hyperbole). Its annoying on street driving; but its downright ridiculous and dangerous on highway driving, when youre exposed to it for long periods. Toyotas response to all of this has officially been "these are normal and characteristic; were sorry you dont like it." So, they intentionally designed vibrations into the truck. Dont be fooled by the "its a truck" excuse. Ive owned many trucks, including Tacomas, and a normal truck doesnt do this. Period. Overall, very disappointing.

  • 2nd update after 9 months of ownership - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Cannot wait to get rid of this 2016 Tacoma when the lease expires. What a dog. New updates - 1. mileage dropped to 10 mpg when towing; 2. NAV screen goes black at least 1x per day and resets itself; and 3. wind howling noise driver side front window. And off course still the same old lack of responsiveness of the engine-- normally runs at less than 2000 rpm and you have to push accelerator pedal more than 1/2 down before it responds creating a very dangerous condition in traffic. Cmon man.

After owning 4 Tundras the last one a 13 platinum I decided to trade for a new tacoma limited, after ready how improved it was, waited over 2 months for it to come in,salesman thought it had power seats but couldnt confirm,I read conflicting articles mostly saying no power seats, well majority of articles were correct, against my better judgment I completed the deal, maybe I was spoiled by the Tundra but this tacoma is very ! Uncomfortable went back to the dealership with 160 miles to trade on a tundra but, only giving me over $4000 less so no deal, the truck also feels very under powered whe in town driving, and the tranny, seems to hunt not a enjoyable drive, ended up trading for a f150 platinum I believe this was a great choice, gas mileage the same as tacoma and so comfortable ! Even so much more than the tundra, just hope its as reliable, after driving only Toyotas for years this took a leap of faith the tacoma purchase may have been last toyota purchase.

  • Tacoma engine/tranny combo a joke - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

My 2016 shifts up and down whenever it feels like it. Sometimes 2 gears at a time on a flat road with the cruise on and no wind. The 6 cylinder engine is a piece of crap teamed with a 6 speed tranny which the 5th and 6th gears not being used at speeds over 75. Had mine back to the shop 4 times and they said this is how they run. Well after owning 9 previous Tacomas that isnt how the older ones run. I hooked it up to my boat and it couldnt get out of 3rd gear with my boat behind it. I had to turn and unhook the boat and I drove right to my dealer and demanded my 2014 Tacoma back. The 2014 pulls the same small boat perfectly. Im 5 11" and my head hits the sunroof constantly and I would be worried if I hit a big bump while driving the 2016. Beware and give it a nice long test drive if your interested in buying a new Tacoma, they have a ton of engine/tranny problems. Just google 2016 Tacoma shifting problems and you can read 1000s of post about unhappy owners like myself. Oh yeah, mileage on 8 fill ups was 12.5 to 13.4, no kidding. I probably had a big lemon, but Toyota Corp. told me this is how they run so Ill leave it up to you to decide. Ive read enough posts to know theres MANY others just like me out there.

  • Its a swing and a miss! The new Tacoma strikes out - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Couple of Details and info for you. I live in Denver 5280 feet above sea level, this may affect my outcome. Second this is my 3rd Tacoma a 1997 then a 2007 now the 2016. I have past trucks to compare to. The new Tacoma is a giant disapointment! The power is way lower than the previous 2005 to 2015 trucks. If you own one of those keep it! The gas mileage on my 2007 was an average of 18 mpg, my new 2016 is averaging 15 mpg! 3 mpg less from a newer truck with a 6 speed transmission. Speaking of the 6 speed transmission, why did Toyota waste the money putting it in? The engine makes so little torque and power that I never get to use 6th, 4th and 5th mostly. In the mountain 3rd and 4th work best. Save your money on this over-priced failed updated from Toyota. I will sell mine right after the holidays, my only question is what to buy? Having owned 3 Tacomas just not sure what I will buy since Toyota has nothing I want.

  • Warning to previous owners of Tacomas - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

The 2016 Tacoma will disappoint anyone that has owned an older V6 powered Tacoma. I have purchased a new Tacoma every 2 years since 1985. I currently still own 4 TRD 4x4s. They are all used for business. The 2016 has the worst engine, transmission, gear ratio of any Toyota I have driven. The power band/shift points leave this vehicle sluggish at best. On any incline in the road the transmission will shift continuously between 6th and 4th(1900rpm to 3400rpm at 75mph). The engine noise is significantly more noticeable than my 2014 which is a great vehicle. On flat ground the transmission shifts through the gears so quickly you find yourself always stepping harder on the throttle to keep the speed up. When you contact Toyota everyone at the dealership will deny they have heard of the problem. Toyota factory reps will admit they know of the issue but as of this date no fix. I would not recommend a 2016. Look for a 2014 or older. Update 08/15/2017. Toyota has a software update for the transmission shifting. You will have to find a service writer familiar with the update. (Most know nothing of it). The update makes the shifting problems better. Doesnt do anything for the noises engine. The truck also has a recall for a leaky rear differential which they do not have the parts to repair. I want my 2014 back.

  • Gas pedal buzzes/vibrates on acceleration through - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Gas pedal buzzes/vibrates on acceleration through most RPMS. During extended acceleration periods, vibration can cause numbness in the foot. Like others have said, it requires you to shift position, use cruise control, and shift gears to get out of the main vibration range. Toyota continues to receive complaints about this issue, but keeps denying that this is even a problem to begin with. I have never experienced this issue on any other car, no matter how old or beat up the vehicle was.
