Resale value is the main reason to purchase this car. I grew up with Toyotas and had several, to include multiple generations of 4Runners. There is nothing left of the old Toyota reliability, or as the sales people keep saying everytime I am at the dealership, "QDR! Quality, Durability, Reliability!" The interior is cheap and poorly constructed, parts have fallen off behind my dash, which required the dash to be pulled to bolt things back into place. My rear differential was replaced under warranty due to excessive noise, but only after a year of documentation on it getting progressively worse. I kept being told this was just a characteristic of the vehicle by the dealer. While the engine is a poor excuse for a truck engine (3.5L with a faux Atkinson cycle that does little for gas mileage but makes power delivery always a question mark) at least I didnt make the mistake of purchasing the automatic. During test drives I immediately knew that would be a mistake. Still, the drivetrain selection even with a manual is questionable, at best. Hopefully I can sell this for enough money to help pay for a new Ford Ranger when they release in the US. Would not purchase again.

I have read a lot of negative posts but I am very happy with the 2016 Tacoma. I am averaging 22 MPG and enjoy driving everyday. I will say I do have a lag when taking the truck from reverse to drive and this does need to be addressed by Toyota. I dont feel it is a safety issue but it does take a second for the transmission to kick in when you put in drive. The truck looks great and I get compliments all the time. I drive 37 miles everyday to work and it has plenty of power when I need it. I would recommend this truck.

  • Sometimes you have to believe what you read. - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Everything negative you can read on this vehicle is true. The transmission has terrible shift flare on top of being geared improperly causing it to shift all the way to 4th gear climbing small hills. You would think with the 3.91 rear end would mean it could hold its own but seeing as your peak torque doesnt show up till 4600 rpm you will be in 4th gaining any sort of elevation. This will destroy your gas mileage. I may see 18.5 combined but I say between 16-17.5 consistently. Lets move on to the rear differential that sings between 45-65 mph. Toyota will absolutely not acknowledge this is a problem and some have this this is normal yet when you drive any other model they produce their differentials do not produce any discernible noise. This is coming after their rear end recall which led to people seizing their differentials due to leaking and low fluid conditions. The supplier of this component on top of their quality control is disgusting . You will have window rattles, dash rattles, door rattles and possible water leaks and faulty seals. This will leave you with a wet back seat ( failed third brake light gasket) or various sounds emitted from your windows as the seal breaks allowing air in. The low pressure fuel pump will make noise loud enough to hear through the sliding rear window. its loud enough you will never want to open it. Your truck will chirp like a cricket at idle .Your dealer may make sure your fluids are topped off but more than likely they did not and it is low on fluids from the factory. the only way you and prove this is by taking it to a private shop and having them check and fill everything. Toyota and the Toyota dealerships do not care about you or your vehicle. They want you to sign the contract and move on with your life and seek help elsewhere. The Qi wireless charging will cook your phone battery and hardly charge it at all. You may maintain battery but your phone will kill the charging as the temperature gets too hot. If you plan on lifting this truck you will have to buy a special bushing for the driver side differential or else your stock needle bearing will fail and you will experience drive line vibrations. You can not use android or apple carplay. You will be restricted to the entune system which is buggy and doesnt work 50% of the time. The GPS is outdated and runs on a 1 year lag and you will have to pay out of pocket 200 dollars for a new SDCard. This truck has incredible drive line slop and axle wrap. When you come to a stop the whole truck will settle and make a thud and when you accelerate the entire drive line has to pick up the excessive slack and you will notice it. You will regret this purchase and at 35k + you will be ignored, given the run around and treated like an idiot. Buyer beware and understand these trucks were designed to hold together for maybe 1,000 miles before they just start falling apart on you. Just long enough for it to be registered and leave you stuck. Then you will have to decide if trading it in and rolling negative equity or just living unhappily with it is what you want to do. So save yourself the stress, headache and embarrassment and look else where.

  • Well worth the switch over from the 2013 Tacoma - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I had a 2013 Tacoma which was a fantastic truck and did very well for me with all the heavy use I put it through. I had always wanted the Toyota truck to step up to more automated features, a sunroof like the old ones had, and heated seats etc. I decided to trade it in for the new TRD sport long bed 4x4 with Technology package. I have not been disappointed. The new truck is far quieter, more roomy in feel, better looking and great and awaited options. I have been overall impressed and happy that I had made the change. There is a lot of feedback talking about the poor acceleration and I have to say that I agree that it is not a spunky as my old truck however; it is not enough to sway my thoughts on the new truck. I am also dissatisfied that they do not include mud flaps as standard equipment when you are paying the higher price for this vehicle. Lastly, purchasing the long bed and desiring the tonneau cover that is available on the short bed, Toyota is slow on getting some of the after market products out to the public and at a much higher cost for the new truck. After having the truck for 7 months now, I am still as happy with the truck as when I purchased it. I have taken several long trips in the truck and I pull a trailer and quad. While going over steep inclines I just feel that the transmission is more noticeable as it has to shift more often to make the grade and at higher RPMs. Still very satisfied with this vehicle.

This is my 6th Toyota truck, 4th Tacoma, and 9th Toyota vehicle overall. 2017 TRD Sport in the exact config I wanted. I was hyped. Then it started falling apart, and Im not sure that will ever stop. I have around 13k miles on it, and it sounds crickets are mating under the hood. You know the annoying chirp of a pulley going out? Yeah, Toyota thinks thats "normal operation" even though theres a TSB for the same issue (High Pressure Fuel Pump) on 2 other Toyota vehicles, and the problem didnt show up until about a week ago. I hear the same issue is on a Lexus model, but of course they are redesigning that pump because, well, Lexus. So far Ive had a window track/motor replaced, 2 BSM sensors replaced, my battery replaced, had to get my windshield replaced from a rock chip that cracked the whole thing, and I think thats it. The service center has gone downhill, which was an incredible disappointment given my history with them, and Toyota corp has failed to stand behind their product. I should have just bought a Raptor, at this point I cant see Ford being any worse than what Ive got from Toyota. Sad state of affairs.

  • Awesome truck, despite a few minor flaws - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

I will start off by simply stating that I LOVE THIS TRUCK! It was everything I was hoping it could be and more. However, considering that this is an informative review, and that anyone reading it is considering a hefty investment, I should probably be as objective/critical as I can. Lets dive in! The Good The drive quality is fantastic! The Bilstein suspension really is worth the money. Not only is the ride quieter, it is smoother overall (this refers to both street and offroad driving). The cabin is quiet and you really feel like you are in control of the vehicle. The features at your disposal give your drive a combination of sporty and luxurious, which I think is a really nice quality. I cannot begin to discuss how cool the Entune system is. Essentially, you are turning your phone into your entire entertainment center. The system functions via Bluetooth and syncs basically everything. You can use Pandora, Facebook, and other random applications AND still have solid phone capabilities (the ability to program speed-dials in the car itself is a big plus for me). The Heads-Up-Display behind the steering wheel also offers some cool and useful features. The "Bad" I put "bad" in quotes because what I am discussing is not necessarily bad, but it is less preferential that I would like. I received running boards with my truck. They seem like they get in the way more than they help. Granted, I am 61", but they seem like they are too high on the frame to be useful. The front seats are fairly comfortable, but you do get stiff when you sit for too long. I am taking this with a grain of salt though. It could simply be that the truck is brand new and they need some time to break in. The interior storage is a bit of a bummer. I used to have a Tundra and had a ton of storage under the back seats. Toyota has opted to turn it into a cargo box, eliminating 60% of the space you could otherwise have. Its not devastating, but the bit of extra space would be useful. My only complaint with Entune is that the bluetooth is a bit glitchy, I guess is the best word. Once everything is connected, it works great. However, sometimes my phone wont connect automatically and it is a pain to get synced again. I also know that my phone is a bit older, so it could very well not be the trucks problem. Overall, I can say that the Tacoma is a joy to own. It does everything that I want and was looking for with several bonus options. I would recommend it to anyone who inquired hands down. It is a combination of practical, luxurious, and sporty. I would encourage you, the reader, to be as informed as possible. Even though I love this truck, personal preferences and needs differ. Do your research and compare models/trims. Hope to see you out in the dunes!

  • One Month of driving! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

People are saying a lot of stuff about the Auto trans shifting all the time and thats not the case with mine. I live and commute in and around Seattle Wa. We have a lot of steep hills around and I dont have problem with the tranny it all. On the freeways I am getting 28-30 MPGs and cant believe it. In town traffic driving I get 16-18 thats great in my book too. Its a large filling truck to Drive but after a week of driving its not a big deal. I owned a 1999 TRD 4x4 and a 2008 TRD 4x4 double cab. I loved both of those truck but I really like this one.

  • Some Bugs to work out - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

This truck is perfect all around. Decent gas mileage and has the interior of a comfortable mid sized sedan. Wonderful off road features. My only gripe currently is the transmission bugs that Toyota is currently aware of and supposedly working on a TSB for. The truck searches for gears constantly at highway speeds, especially if you have the cruise control on. UPDATED 11/22/16: After owning the truck for 6 months, I can say this is still a great truck. Im so pleased with it. Toyota released a TSB for the transmission that fixed the gear searching, but there are still some issues with the transmission flaring/slipping on cold startup. UPDATED 11/22/17: Ive had the truck for over a year and a half now, and the transmission still leaves much to be desired. It searches for gears (not as bad as before the update) wont upshift in certain conditions and I still cant use the cruise control. Its literally the only thing I dont like about the truck.

  • big mistake - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Whistling noise on breezy days, transmission shifts constantly, anemic power, it does seem to get advertised MPG. Nothing like my 1999 or 2005 Tacoma. Very disappointed, will trade soon. Update... My opinion about the truck did not change, whistling noise continued, and I could not get use to the lack of power, really disappointed, my wife tried it for a while and took it on a trip to the mountains, she said it was a struggle to keep it going and didnt like all the engine noise. Had to really baby it to get 22 mpg and most of the time it was 19-20 mpgs. I traded it this month, got a Ram with eco diesel and Im getting 27 mpg not from the computer but checking it myself. Again this was not my first Tacoma it was my 3rd. I guess others are feeling the same see lots of used 2016s on the car lots.
