This Year's Model Updates:

A sporty new XRS model debuts boasting a 170-horsepower engine and a sport-tuned suspension. Additionally, all Corollas receive a restyled front fascia and rear taillights. The LE model now has Lexus-like Optitron instrumentation, along with a cloth-trimmed center console and sun visors. Side curtain airbags, stability control and a JBL audio system are all new options.

Pros:
  • Refined and roomy interior, excellent gas mileage and crash test scores, long list of safety features, spunky XRS model, illustrious reliability record.
Cons:
  • Awkward driver-seat position, bland personality, gets pricey when even basic features are desired, sedan body style only.

  • Excellent fuel economy, almost reliable - 2005 Toyota Corolla

Everything runs great after 34000 miles. Smoothest ride in its class (which isnt saying much), although somewhat sluggish in handling and noisy on the highway. Driving position is very awkward if you are tall, although my 52" wife loves it. I wish we had the Japanese model in the US. (It has automatic climate control, vehicle stability and ABS standard, etc) Toyota reliability and quality is somewhat overrated. Mine came with dislodged window rubber from the factory. ECU replaced because engine didnt always start due to known factory defect on early 05 production. However, everything else is in excellent shape after 3 years of use, with no sign of wear.

The best small care I ever owned since 1963!

  • Best choice in class - 2005 Toyota Corolla

This is the best car in the class for performance compacts. Very good performance + great build + great resale value + good safety (with side airbags). Considered Nissan Sentra (reliability problems) and Honda Accord (price problems). Corolla S didnt have enough oomph for me, plus IMPOSSIBLE to find with ABS. XRS could use more oomph at low RPMs, but still plenty for day-to-day. This cars engine "boosts" at 7K RPM, but youll rarely have a chance to get up there. 30-32 MPG highway, youll downshift out of 6th to pass quickly though. Great handling comes with rougher ride. Youll get "jostled" in your seat going over rougher roads, but very stable in corners, especially on/off ramps.

Bought new. Commute 130 mile a day. Have 78K on it now. Mainly highway. I drive aggressively. Problems have been AC leak and currently a very small oil leak around one of the gaskets. Tires were replaced at about 55K. Still never had to replace my brakes. Im 56 and feel comfortable during long trips. There is road noise, but all small cars have that. It drives excellently in the snow. I was shocked at how well it drove through some tough snow mounds the plows left behind. Traction in the snow going up hill isnt the best based on past cars Ive owned. The anti-locks (optional safety package) work great. Would buy this car again.

I have had this car for about a year and a half and it gets excellent gas mileage, drives very smooth, is comfortable, and very reliable. I was also in a wreck about a month ago and the side of my car got hit hard but fortunately I did not get hurt because this car is very safe. When they fixed my car it looked brand new. It really is an overall outstanding car.

  • My First Toyota - 2005 Toyota Corolla

After owning 5 Hondas, I decided to try a Toyota. Ive been very pleased with the overall performance, quality, and simplicity of this vehicle. The vehicle fits me very well (510") and it is comfortable to drive for an extended period of time. I am a little disappointed with the gas mileage Im getting. Im averaging 32 MPG (28 city and 37 highway). Great trunk space. The interior materials are top notch for a vehicle in this price range. Note: The trunk lid doesnt close as well as it should even after being adjusted.

Follow up review. Traded this car recently, needed a pickup. Probably best car Ive ever owned. Never to the dealer. Only problem was the belt tensioner squeeked after 24k miles. Avg 34 mpg. Needed tires after 24k (the Goodyear Integritys are budget based). Paid $14.5k and got $12k on trade-in (after 2 years and 38k miles). Unbelievable resale value in my opinion. Someones going to get a great used car.

  • Its A Toyota! - 2005 Toyota Corolla

Its a Toyota...of course, its good! I absolutely love my S...traded in a Camry and like the S better. It is easier to get in and out than the Camry. Our local dealership was great also and really worked hard to get me a great deal...along with the extended warranty...and protection package. Since we also have a Highlander, we didnt need a big car....just something to get me back and forth to the office. This car is more than I could have ever imagined for the price.

  • A fun drive, but has its flaws - 2005 Toyota Corolla

First things first: why has nobody mentioned that the factory hubcaps have a tendency to fly off at the slightest bump/sharp turn (5-spoke)? My girlfriend drives this car and loves it, but I know she is not the only one to have problems with wheel covers/hubcaps, especially since it so difficult to find this particular part online. Other than the aforementioned problem (and a strange whistling noise in the upper part of the windshield-loose seal?), this car is fairly stylish and fun to drive. It definitely gets better gas mileage than my old trusty Jeep, but I still prefer a car a bit higher off the ground.
