Its really nothing special, but for overall value and reliability, there is not a better car. Its not too fun to drive, its small, its slow, but it will last forever and the mpg is excellent. If you have a small family or are a young professional, it is a great car to get started with.

  • Love my Corolla - 1999 Toyota Corolla

I purchased my Corolla two and a half years ago with 67,000 miles on it. It is my first car. Up to this point I could not be happier with my purchase. On the road the Corolla is very easy to drive and feels stable at all speeds. The ride for the most part is comfortable except when driving over large bumps or uneven road surfaces. The gas mileage is terrific. I routinely average 29mpg in city driving with the automatic transmission. The interior of the Corolla is nice too. The materials are high quality and the controls are very simple, I would even say too simple. The cabin is usually quite except for an annoying rattleling noise that comes from within the center console.

I purchased a used 1999 Toyota Corolla LE with a 1.8L 4spd automatic trans w/ OD in 2014 with approx 150,000 miles on it. It had been well taken care of by the previous owner, and I continued the same maintenance with regular oil changes, etc. I took it to Riverview Toyota in Mesa, AZ for my regular maintenance and they never fleeced me or recommended anything other than the oil changes and other regular maintenance. The brake pads were kind of making a slow grind and I took it into Riverview and they were honest and told me the previous owner didnt install ceramic brake pads (at a non Toyota shop) and the grind was nothing, dont worry about it they said keep driving it and ignore the non-ceramic brake pad sound (they could have lied and charged me for new brakes but they didnt). I only mention the dealership because the honest service I got from the manufacturer was half the experience of owning this car. THIS MODEL IS BULLET PROOF!!! It ran perfectly, was quick in city and highway driving, and had a smooth ride, and the seats were pretty comfortable and like new. The engine uses a timing chain so no need to worry about timing belts coming apart and causing damage. As you know, timing chains typically outlast the life of a car. I never had any problems with a/c, power windows, locks, or other stuff either. The trunk is pretty spacious and the rear seats fold down to extend the cargo capacity with a opening to the trunk. This is the little car that keeps going and going. I just sold it to a neighbor with 180k on it and he loves it too. If there was anything I could complain about it would be the low profile and it is hard to get in and out for larger / taller people. Rock chips on the front were pretty bad and it appears the paint doesnt hold up well over the years but my car was white so it didnt look bad at all. I put a cheap $30 "pleather" bra on the front and it looked pretty good. If you want a reliable car that will start every time, this is the car. I would drive this car to Alaska and back, no problem. Gas mileage in this car is awesome too. I would buy another one, and recommend this car to anyone.

We got this little toyota 99 le 4 door from a party that had got it from a salvage yard. At 72k miles it got hit on the pass. quarter panel, trunk, and rear bumper. It was repaired, you cant even tell it was ever in an accident. It drives like a dream, and dont have to tell you that 30+ mpg is excellent these days. So not only is it a great car, but it can take a hit. Esp. since it has side and front air bags in the le model...Go for it, Toyota !!1

  • Small and Cute - 1999 Toyota Corolla

Its been good to me despite the abuse. Its small but comfortable, and cheap for a Toyota, I trust it will last for a long time. I had a 90 corolla before and it was a good car also, thats why I decided to stick with corollas.

  • Reliable - 1999 Toyota Corolla

I bought this car new and have just over 175,000 miles on it. The only items I have replaced are the front struts, brakes, tires, and other routine maintenance items. Very reliable.

As a college student, what I really want is something that is reliable (read = cheap to maintain), safe, and fuel efficient. The Corolla fits the bill.

  • Great little workhorse! - 1999 Toyota Corolla

I am on my 4th Corolla. My 99 was bought in 2009, and is still going strong at 240,000 miles. One of my lower ratings is because of all the plastic parts inside, but this is something I see with many cars, not just Toyotas. Ive had door handles snap off, as well as pieces of the moldings. Cupholders eventually snapped off too but I replaced. So Id like to see stronger parts, and if I had my way, no plastic at all....The most major repair I did was replacing the catalytic converter. The dealer wanted thousands to do this, but I found a local repair shop who did it for much less, back in 2010, and Ive had no problems since. Ive replaced brakes and struts, and of course buy new tires periodically. I do city driving so stop-and-go traffic, hence, the toll it takes on my brakes. Other things Ive replaced are things that simply give out with age. My main concern is the engine and transmission and those are rock solid. When my car is running, people often cant even hear that its running! Even at its old age, I get about 25 mpg. A couple of expensive repairs did occur. The power window stopped working on my driver side which entailed the purchase of a new motor for the door. Pricey. The other day, another door handle snapped off. Mechanic tried to put on new one, only to find the interior mechanism had to be replaced. Ive also done exhaust work but once done, no more problems. No issues with undercarriage like U-joints or anything like that. All my Corollas have gone over 200,000 miles and Im staying with this brand. Im buying my next one nearly-new and since I take excellent care of my cars, and am not rough at all with the interior, I dont expect issues with things ripping and breaking. I love these cars, and when 99s appear on used lots in my area, they are often scooped up within a few days, if the price is right and car is clean.
