This Year's Model Updates:

The Avalon gets side-impact airbags, new headlights and taillamps, a new grille, a new trunk lid and pre-tensioner seatbelts with force limiters.

Pros:
  • One of the best full-size cars on the market. Stylish, reliable, and surprisingly roomy, this thing has a back seat like Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas.
Cons:
  • Invisible in a crowd. Dashboard plastics are too shiny for a car this nice.

  • Avalon: Like Cruisin on Catalina - 1998 Toyota Avalon

I really enjoy the Avalon. This car gets a solid 25 mpg without sacrificing performance. I can turn off overdrive and step on it going up mountain passes and around slower traffic and the V-6 responds really well. The ride is smooth and the interior sits six adults comfortably. Ive taken road-trips with four other adults without any complaints about space or comfort. The only problem Ive had is that the brakes have a pernicious squeal on this model that was not corrected by the new brake pads that the dealer installed. I think that this was corrected on later models. Overall, I think my Avalon is an excellent cruising sedan.

  • The Good and Bad... mostly Good - 1998 Toyota Avalon

This car excels in being reliable, dependable, and performance. It has good visibility with no measurable blind spots. Seats seem to be made for smaller framed people. Feels like Im sitting on a stool. Right elbow doesnt reach the armrest in the drivers position. I rated the quality a 7, even though I think the engine quality is excellent, the exterior quality of the metal is weak. A slight tap on the panels will create a dent.

The only thing I dont like about my Avalon is the seat belts. They cut across my neck and are too tight. The back seat ones are especially bad.

This has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. Aside from the road noise, there has not been a complaint about the car in the five years we have owned it.

Solid and reliable car. Comfort is exceptional. Just returned from vacation, driving 18 hours straight with 5 people. Rear seat comfort is as good as front. Averaged 30 mpg.

  • Auto climate control /Beware - 1998 Toyota Avalon

I have been quite happy with my XLS after having purchased used with 70k miles. However I was very disappointed with Toyota design with Auto Climate Control. Servo motor on blower system went out due to design flaw admitted to by Toyota in a technical service bulletin which directed dealers to replace entire workings of Auto Climate control system when $35.00 servo motor failed. (Cost me $1000.00)I was forced to replace entire system. Toyota incidentally redesigned entire system for 1999 model years but would not back up 1998 defective system. Shame on you for sticking it to us 1998 owners.

This is a nice comfortable car.. It is the same model as the Lexus 300.. same car but much cheaper.. Great road car cruises well at 80 mph plus! The V-6 is very powerful..

Enjoy driving my car. Do both in-town and out-of town driving. Have maintained regular service with Toyota dealer in area. Replaced 4 tires within last year. No major mechanical problems. Cloth seats.

  • Simply The Best! - 1998 Toyota Avalon

This road warrior has been in my family since new. My father put the first 150,000 miles on the car without any needed repairs except routine wear and tear parts (i.e. Brakes, tires, battery, oil). Now the odometer reads 250,000 miles and I just had the original timing belt and water pump replaced because it was LONG overdue. In the 12 years and 250,000 my family has put on our Avalon (a.k.a "Road Warrior") it has never, not even one time, left us stranded or failed to start, not once!! With the long history that I have with my Avalon I feel more than qualified to speak on the behalf of my car, and I fully endorse this car without reservation! If you have the opportunity to buy one, do!
