This Year's Model Updates:

The Avalon gets side-impact airbags, new headlights and taillamps, a new grille, a new trunk lid and pre-tensioner seatbelts with force limiters.

Pros:
  • One of the best full-size cars on the market. Stylish, reliable, and surprisingly roomy, this thing has a back seat like Jaguar XJ8 Vanden Plas.
Cons:
  • Invisible in a crowd. Dashboard plastics are too shiny for a car this nice.

  • Holy crap, this car is too damn reliable - 1998 Toyota Avalon

im 17 years old. This car is my first car last year. its like that first practice car that u usually bang up. well i havent hit anything yet but my god is this car reliable. we bought it when it back in 2003 with 116k on it in PERFECT condition.now its kinda of banged up, radio buttons falling off, etc, but it just WONT DIE. my mom drove it 160 miles a day at one point, and i drive it about 40-50 as of now(and i dont drive it nicely), its close to 220k. im getting an acura tl, but if it wasnt for the cars body falling apart and the [violative content deleted] acceleration,id be sad about this departure. im just mad at my parents because they said were gonna sell after the time belt wears out :(

  • Avalon built in USA - No good - 1998 Toyota Avalon
    By -

This Avalon was built in Kentucky with good ol union labor...and it shows! The dealer delivered the vehicle with the rear middle seat belt BEHIND the rear seat backrest! The front seat belts have to manually feed back into their slots. The front armrest was replaced twice under waranty. My wife was injured by the parking brake foot lever when she was in a minor accident ? her shin bode hit the peddle which bruisded the bone. The drive train sometimes jerks in stop n go traffic or taking off from a dead stop. Finally, the tire noise is so bad...rear seat occupant ALWAYS complain about the noise! What a lousy car for $28 grand!!

  • Smokin engine... literally - 1998 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I bought this Avalon having owned another 1st generation Avalon. Didnt figure Id need to have a PPI, but I should have gotten one. Turns out the engine was a smoker. Despite replacing the valve seals and spark plugs, it continued to smoke. Quickly re-sold it.
