This Year's Model Updates:

Subaru commemorates 35 years of selling cars in the U.S. by offering a 35th anniversary special edition of the Outback H6-3.0 wagon, though this amounts to little more than a new alloy wheel design and a fender-mounted badge. Red Burl interior trim is new for the Outback this year, and six-cylinder models get restyled 16-inch wheels. L.L. Bean and Limited models get a new brown leather covering on the shifter handle, brake handle and steering wheel.

Pros:
  • Standard all-wheel drive, comfortable ride on pavement, capable performance on dirt, well-appointed interior.
Cons:
  • Not as capable as an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability or interior volume, four-cylinder models lack power, upscale models are expensive.

This is my 3rd Outback. They are the most reliable cars. They are very versatile; you can haul the wife and 3 kids or drop the back seat and move desks, filing cabinets, etc. They are very desirable. Buy in the spring and sell at the first snow fall.

This car also offers a great performance even with the base, 2.5 L engine. The performance can be further improved by installing the K & N high- flow air filter instead of the factory one. I found that the K&N filter significantly improves the low-end torque. I also noticed improved a/t performance (smoother operation), but not the fuel efficiency. The latter might be due to impressive 23/30mpg (city/highway) numbers, which I already had registered right after my Outback passed the 3K miles mark.

  • Buy an 04, not newer body style - 2004 Subaru Outback

If youre shopping for a used Subaru, buy an 04. Very dependable car, no trouble. Mine has more than 100K miles and getting 27 mpg. According to a local Subaru mechanic, 04 is the best year for Subarus. Run from the 05s. See my review for our 05 Outback XT under title "Money Pit". Its hard to believe the cars are from the same manufacturer. The 04 has been a perfect car and the 05 was a horribly expensive nightmare. Were keeping the 04 and plan to put another 100K miles on it.

  • Cant beat it - 2004 Subaru Outback

Chose the L.L. Bean Outback over a Highlander, Pilot, Matrix, XC70, and A4 wagon. You just cant get another car with full time AWD, 8 inches of ground clearance, leather interior, dual moonroofs, 6 CD changer, ABS, side airbags and a 212 HP engine for less money (we paid just over $28k). Weve had it for about a year, and the Outbacks winter performance is better than any SUV Ive ever driven (including Explorer, Yukon, Jimmy and Envoy)- it is so much more confident on icy corners. Im a volunteer firefighter who MUST be able to get on the road no matter what the conditions, and this car got me to the station through 10 inches of snow on unplowed roads more than once.
