Overview & Reviews
As with the Legacy platform it's based on, Subaru's hot-selling Outback is completely redesigned for the millennium.
- The security of all-wheel drive, comfortable on pavement, capable on dirt.
- Could use more power, still not an SUV in terms of pure off-road capability.

Solid & Dependable - 2000 Subaru Outback
By mkhappy - November 28 - 10:00 amWe have put a ton of miles in a short time and have enjoyed every mile. The car is comfortable, easy to drive and very reliable. I haul camping equip, music equip, and bikes...Will probably buy another as soon as it makes sense.

Quick study - 2000 Subaru Outback
By magicjeanne - October 9 - 10:00 amHandles and drives well, hugs road, not powerful, unless time to gain momentum on open hwy. What smells like its burning after driving up hills? After heated seat has been on? Transmission? I have an automatic. Why no rear window wiper? Why no storage pockets behind front seats?

Head Gasgets blown twice - 2000 Subaru Outback
By Steve - May 31 - 1:23 pmWe have had several Subarus but this one started having problems...head gasget went at 60k then again at 110k, radiator went at 110k, CV Boot replaced 2x, plus other problems..one major plus is Subaru stood behind their vehicle and covered the head gasget even when out of warranty.

Practical but Fun - 2000 Subaru Outback
By jhigby - May 4 - 10:00 amThis has been a great car - yes "car". It rides like a car, handles like a car and for the 95% of average driving is exactly what you want. It does have enough clearance along with the AWD that you can get off the pavement. Ive done this some but mainly just for camping not for some baja type adventure. Thats the beauty for me - Im not trapped by 4" of clearance but I dont want a fulltime SUV ride for those rare times.

Great gas mileage even on snowy VT roads - 2000 Subaru Outback
By Travis - March 25 - 10:30 pmGet a stick shift! it makes the experience of driving this car 100 times better. Automatics are boring. Be exciting. Drive a stick shift!

I love my Outback - 2000 Subaru Outback
By spotakus - February 2 - 10:00 amAfter almost 4 years of driving this vehicle, I would still not replace this with any other car. The ride is fantastic, the handling great, and the quality of assembly cannot be passed. I have had to perform only regular maintainance, and have not had any repair problems. I would, and have, recomend this car to anyone.

Seven Years in - 2000 Subaru Outback
By Subie Man - August 27 - 2:13 pmPurchased new, now have 77K on it. I love Subarus, and this one has its highs and one low. Snow and wet conditions cannot stop this car. I have tried to lose traction (all season radial tires, not snow rated) and cant. Love the reliability except for the head gasket that needed replacing - the car was past warranty (uh-oh), yet Subaru covered it (phew). No other repair issues, brakes are still fine, even. 20/27 MPG, even with Thule box on top.

Good car, questionable transmission - 2000 Subaru Outback
By Rod - August 5 - 1:36 pmThe car handles fine and looks good. We have been happy with the car until last week. We just had the car towed to the dealership because transmission would not engage when put in drive. It had been hesitating for several seconds before engaging. Dealership immediately suggested a new transmission, or a flush, which may get it operating again, but dont know for how long. We opted for flush ($400), and transmission works - for now. But still a slight hesitation after shifting into drive. From other internet sources, this may be a common problem. Dealer seemed to have seen it before. Now we plan to trade it. A shame, we were hoping to keep it for 200K miles.

Great Wagon - 2000 Subaru Outback
By RangerRon7 - July 3 - 9:16 pmThis vehicle has been great! The AWD has proven itself in two major snowstorms that we have had here in the Midwest. Its a very quiet, comfortable cruiser with excellent handling (especially compared to any SUV). The cargo space is huge. This vehicle is NOT going to snap your head back with its performance, but acceleration is adequate in day-to-day driving situations. Im definitely glad we bought this vehicle.

clutch problems - 2000 Subaru Outback
By triesch - April 3 - 10:00 amgood car, but constant problems with the clutch, which has been replaced several times. It was finally working good, when it just failed on me in very, very hot weather. Dealer tells me they have a fix for it. Well see... Also, lots of rattles
