Overview & Reviews
The base model is now simply called "Base" instead of S. Nissan works to quiet the Sentra's interior by using a bigger muffler and reducing the number of suspension-mounting points.
- Relatively powerful engine, nice interior ergonomics, and good fuel economy.
- Boring styling.

Best bang for your buck! - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By Jamie - May 24 - 2:20 amAmazing little car! Fun to drive, great on gas, and it wont nickel and dime you. I bought this car used with 50k miles, it just hit 80k, and I have had no problems with it. An incredibly reliable vehicle- this car has been nothing but good to me. The perfect car for the college commuter.

Bad Rear Struts - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By frank - March 14 - 9:50 pmWe bought this car for a teenaged daughter, it had a very rough first sixty thousand miles. The woman who owned it hit everything in her way. We bought her cheap, replaced 3 bent wheels, a bent back axle, light body work, lots was already done. I replaced an alternator at 98 thousand, and just replaced my third set of rear struts also replacing the springs this time. Hopefully to change my luck. The car runs nice for what it is.

I got suckered!! - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By bodyglitter - July 19 - 10:00 amI bought this car used (with 30,000 miles on it) and have had a ton of problems with it!! I have had to have practically everything replaced from rotors, clutch, brakes, to two alternators. I also had a significant oil leak (it was pouring out like water). Every time I take it in the service man says that they never have seen so much wear on a car with that many miles. Currently, it is losing speed uphill and the clutch sounds like it is going to go out again. I will never buy a Nissan again.

Great car, Worst Dealer - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By naidu - January 8 - 2:26 pmThis is a wonderful car. I used it heavily(from Toronto to DC, NH to Detroit). No problems except brake maintainance. Dealership however SUCKS BIG TIME. Their service departments only goal is to mint money. They suggested all unnecessary maintenance and make you pay. For a beutifully working car, they proposed $1000 worth maintenance 2 years ago. I didnt do any of them and the car is still great! Now I use STS.

Gas mileage is good - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By clb891 - November 19 - 7:28 ami have the AT..bought this car used from some man whose daughter hit a deer in it(driver side headlight area). i got it fixed for a good price. It has 250k miles but it runs GREAT. Good car for someone living on a tight budget(im a college Kid) i use it to go back and forth to school mostly and gas mileage is still good. i can go almost 2wks on a full tank. with only a little hp and torque, it really knows how to use it even at 65+ it still goes strong(better than my friends 08 civic). i am 510 so room is an issue especially when riding people in the back.

Great commuter - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By - September 3 - 10:00 amAt 57,000 miles, oil changes every 6,000, two new air filters, spark plugs replacement at 30,000 (put a 100K paltinum) and front brake pads replacement at 53,000, the Sentra easely is the most reliable and maintenance-free car on the road today. The total cost of ownership for 4.5 years, excluding gas, is $300. Ignore everything dealers offer in maintenance packets; just stick to the bare-minimum maintenance requirements in your booklet.

great car - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By diane - August 28 - 10:00 amI purchased my sentra due to nissans reputation. I previously owned an older model that I purchased with 90,000 miles on it. I drove it for 4 years and put got rid of it at 169,000 miles. The only maitenence that I did was a clutch that was just preventative, tires, and brakes.

It wont ever let you down - 1997 Nissan Sentra
By NissanFanatic - July 16 - 10:00 amEngine-wise, this car is exremely reliable. However, the rest of the vehicle is aging quickly. So far both sun visors have broken, the treble button on the radio comes off, and just recently one of the power window buttons broke. These are all minor things in my opinion, but they can become annoying. The paint quality also appears to be poor; its very easily scratched. Also, the seats are highly uncomfortable on long trips. As long as you can tolerate little problems like these and appreciate the reliability this car has to offer, then I would recommend this car to anyone starting off or on a budget.
