This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been (controversially) redesigned, providing more power, more room and more amenities to the luxury/performance sedan buyer. Key among the improvements is 222 horsepower from the standard V6, a boost in rear-seat legroom and an available 200-watt Bose audio system.

Pros:
  • Silky and powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, room for the whole family.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

I love this car. After my 99 Civic was stolen, I bought the Maxima 2000 Se. The Civic was also found. So now I have the Civic and Maxima. Paid in full cash. Pretty cheap :):)

Overall, pretty happy with the car. Bought it in 4-04 with 42,000 miles. Doubled the mileage in one year. Mileage is pretty good, although the car "feels" like its getting old. I have never owned a Nissan before, bought this one on reputation alone. Would POSSIBLY buy another one in the future when I learned how to drive slower. At 35, I got my first two speeding tickets driving this car. LOL!

  • 2000 Nissan GXE - 2000 Nissan Maxima

I was the original owner of this vehicle. With regular oil changes every 3,000 miles, this car has held up very well. I had to replace the fan assembly because the bearings went out on one of the fans. Nissan would not replace just the bad fan which cost me about $400 more than it should have. I lost a key, because as previously mentioned the plastic top part of the key broke. I have also had the throttle body cleaned 3 times which has made a huge difference in performance every time. I have 180,000 miles total on this car and would not hesitate to purchase another. The downside is, the base price for the Maxima has gone up $8000 since 2000.

This is a good car, but for the GXE they seem to have lost sight of the fact that this was once the 4DSC (4 door sports car). Mash the throttle and, yes, it takes off, but with no mean-sounding growl. The interior is roomy and comfortable, the trunk big and the ride smooth and quiet, but it doesnt seem like a sports sedan to me.

  • Great for now, but... - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Ive done 70k miles in this car in under 2 years and I must say its been very reliable, no problems other than wear and tear stuff (beakes, etc). However, Ive noticed the engine has gotten a little noisier in the past few months, only to be told by nissan that its normal for a car with this mileage. Surely a car isnt over the hill at 75k!! Also, the handling has always been a little clumsy. I find the throttle unsresponsive and use the brakes a lot. Drove a rental Max SE (2002?) this week - thru the mountains of Oregon - and it was a joy to drive. Perhaps they worked out the bugs on my model...

  • Would do it all over again! - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Bought the car brand new back in 2000, other than a clicking sound coming from the engine compartment when it was under warranty I have not had any real problems. The front routers warped after a panic stop and had to be replaced at 50K. Currently I have over 70k and the car is still going strong! Gas mileage is upper 20s but I am a little heavy on the gas pedal. Over all I still love the car and I am not ready to trade it just yet.

  • Family Man Fun - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Purchased new SE as a demo with 7k miles. There werent many choices for a sporty 4 door with a manual tranny. The newly lengthened 00 was bigger than an A6 or 5xx BMW and cost much less. It has lots of legroom and the leather interior is still holding up even with two kids. After 8 years it is still fun to drive and comfy on road trips. With 100k miles I get 24/28 running 89 fuel. I drive more gently now. The exterior has held up pretty well even with occasional modifications in the parking lot. Because of the reliability, I wont consider a new Maxima to replace my 00 unless they include a FREE 100k bumper to bumper warranty.

This is a follow-up to a report from a year ago. Since then I have replaced the brake pads and rotors (again), the O2 sensors (again), and the clutch hydraulic line. And again the engine light is telling me to be prepared to spend lots of money come inspection time. Well, the die has been cast and the Maxima will have a new home by then. It will NOT be replaced by another Nissan product.

  • Still sweet after 42months - 2000 Nissan Maxima

I have a 2000 SE Auto and with 43,000 miles after 42 months, car still strong, engine still sweet! This is truly a 4 door sports car. Performance is better than a lot of "sports cars" Ive driven. There is nothing finer than to be cruising down the interstate at 80 MPH, punching the gas, and feeling the acceleration. The engine does run out of breath at about 95 MPH, but that is a small complaint. (I shouldnt be going that fast anyway!)

  • Great Car but....... - 2000 Nissan Maxima
    By -

The Maxima is my first Nissan and I was impressed by the performance and list of standard features. Not unlike some of the others reviewers, however, I have also replaced two oxygen sensors, the coils which were disengaging the no slip drive and the brakes also chatter when slowing down from higher speeds and need the rotors turned. For a medium size car the turning circle is also poor and for larger people the back seat has insufficient headroom. On the positive side the car handling is good, the finish was excellent and the gas mileage for longer trips is exceptional. I would certainly consider another Maxima, but am leaning towards the Murano as it has the extra headroom.
