This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been (controversially) redesigned, providing more power, more room and more amenities to the luxury/performance sedan buyer. Key among the improvements is 222 horsepower from the standard V6, a boost in rear-seat legroom and an available 200-watt Bose audio system.

Pros:
  • Silky and powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, room for the whole family.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

My wife bought this car in 2000 before we were married and it has been great until it hit about 60,000 miles. Like the others the coils have went out and front end and rear end suspension needs replacing. Tires are outrageously overpriced for the 17". The car is also louder than my 2002 accord. The gas mileage has never been good. For the price that she paid and what I paid for the accord I think that I came out a lot better. With 77,000 on the maxima I think that the tranny is going out. It loses power at high(over 3700) rpms. any sugestion?

Bought in 2005, with 70,000 miles, as a good compromise between power and economy. Overall, have been dissatisfied with the experience. I have replaced 2 sets of brakes, and they have begun to make noise again. Suspension has aged poorly, especially in rear, transmission slips (and is more to fix than the car is worth to me). I have put a lot of highway miles on the car (60,000), and it has not taken them well. Fortunately, I installed an expensive aftermarket stereo, which drowns out most of the road, wind, and mechanical noises the car makes. Requires premium fuel for not-so-snappy performance. I have also had to replace coils, radiator, and thermostat. Engineering is mediocre at best.

  • Punishing ride - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Bought mine with 74k, now has 85500 exhaust was repaired 2 wks after purchase, rear frozen caliper 3 months after purchase. Hard ride is worst feature. GLE is better. Must use high test fuel. Quality of interior is lacking. Nissans are not known for comfortable ride, Maxima SE confirms.

  • Not a Long-term car - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Purchased car used @ 39K. Car performance is great. Reliability not great by any means. List of replacement and cost since the car now has 118K miles. Ignition coils-$700, MAF-$400, bad engineering braking system w/replacement of rotors/pad 5 times - $2000, catalytic converter- $1000, muffler-$400, wheel bearing- $500. which total to $5000. Thats too much for me. This does not include other items such tune-ups which is standard on any car. For me, this will be my last Nissan. Dealership experience has been a nightmare. Especially Nissan of Natick Massachusetts. The people there are not very professional and will lie to your face w/o a blink of an eye. Goin bak to Toyota reliability

Great car until the extended warranty ended. Then, needed new 5 sp manual trans Other negatives are high priced tires for optional rims.

  • Not a Sports sedan - 2000 Nissan Maxima

The only good thing about the 2000 Maxima is the engine. Smooth, powerful. The seating position is poor and the handling is also poor. Wind noise is terrible (at highway sppeds)!!!!!!!!!!!!! The gauges are minimal with no oil pressure, etc

  • MAXIMA IS TAKING ME FOR A RIDE - 2000 Nissan Maxima

ALTHOUGH THIS CAR HAS BEEN FUN TO DRIVE, IT IS STARTING TO BE A NIGHTMARE FOR REPAIRS, BUYERS BEWARE!!!! I BOUGHT THIS NEW AND AT 25,500 MILES THE COILS HAD TO BE REPLACED, WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.OK, NOW, AT 41000K THEY HAVE TO BE REPLACED AGAIN AT A WHOPPING $780.00. I AM CURRENTLY TALKING TO NISSAN, BUT SAID MAYBE THE NEXT TIME THEY GO THEY WILL FOOT THE BILL FOR THE COST OF THE COILS (80.00 EACH).NOT LABOR. I WILL GET RID THE CAR AS SOON AS I CAN!!!!! HEADS UP PEOPLE, THIS CAR HAD FLAWS AND IM NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS IS HAPPENING TO!! ITS NOT THAT FUN TO DRIVE.

  • Significant Problems after 80k - 2000 Nissan Maxima
    By -

I purchased this car from a well known car dealership with a solid reputation. It was great for 6 months. Then the check engine light came on; due to a faulty oxygen sensor. Then 3 additional sensors failed within 3 months. This car is only 5 years old with only 80k miles on it. It is not driven hard and is supplied with 91 octane fuel. I will never own a Nissan again, and I will be trading for a reliable Honda soon!!

  • Very concerned - 2000 Nissan Maxima

We test drove several new cars before settling for the maxima. It really sold us as soon as we drove it out of the lot for a test drive, very powerful engine and felt heavy on the road with its nice ride. Now for the ugly part, after 28,000 mile the check engine light came on and had to replace one of the oxygen sensors, about the same time the car started vibrating whenbraking, had to resurface the rotors, at 47000 had to replace the oxygen sensors again. this time it cost me over $300 to get it fixed. Ive been reading some of the reviews on here and it makes me feel like I should off loading this car before it really starts falling apart. I thought tha

  • 2nd Maxima to date - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Overall, this car is sweet. I love the bose system and subwoofer. For a factory system it rocks. The interior layout is simply designed. I couldnt see myself driving a camry or accord. I am happy with my purchase, yet not happy with the reliabily and fit n finish. 40K miles so far. I still have my 87 max, which I still love (87, best max ever)
