This Year's Model Updates:

The Maxima has been (controversially) redesigned, providing more power, more room and more amenities to the luxury/performance sedan buyer. Key among the improvements is 222 horsepower from the standard V6, a boost in rear-seat legroom and an available 200-watt Bose audio system.

Pros:
  • Silky and powerful V6 engine, sports car moves, room for the whole family.
Cons:
  • Odd styling details, high price, rough ride quality with SE suspension.

  • Quality car - 2000 Nissan Maxima

This is an update of an earlier review of my 2000 Maxima. Ive owned it now for 3 1/2 years and I have to say that overall, it is the best car that I have ever owned. Objectively speaking, this is a quality car, with few problem issues. Yes, I have had to spend $700 to replace the ignition coils (as mentioned by many 2000 Maxima owners), plus another $250 or so to replace an O2 sensor. However, overall, it has been a very good value and near-luxury in execution. It now has 120,000 miles on it and the engine is as strong as ever. It needs minor bodywork, but I have decided that I will get that done, as I plan to drive this baby for another 3 years.

This car wouldnt go 50 mph. Just dogged out. I changed plugs hoping for a fouled plug. no such luck. frightened to death of going to Nissan dealer after being slammed for ignition coil packs. $2000.00 I proceeded to local Autozone and asked Manager Dave of any possible symptoms. I had a bottle of typical injector cleaner. He told me to put the other back and buy Lucas fuel injector cleaner so I did. I drove down the local I 90 thruway 50 miles. This stuff had this 230 horse Maxima screaming again. I could not believe it. Everybody, before to start replacing all kinds of hopeful parts, spend $5.99. You might have the same luck. Again Lucas Fuel Injector cleanr. This stuff works. Big savings!

Very sporty sedan with plenty of smooth power. I suggest the leather seats and Bose stereo.

I got a great deal on this car and I guess I know why. Being a mechanic, I can tell you these cars have problems not worth fixing. On the 2000-2003 Maxima, the computers give faulty signals saying sensors arent functioning properly. After manually checking each sensor to determine that the mass-airflow sensor needed to be replaced and not the O2 sensors, I replaced that. In addition, the O2 and cooling sensors will go and theyre $200 each for parts and there are 12 total (6 cooling, 6 O2). And that wont fix it. Ive now ran all electrical/computer test and the only way to fix it is to take parts off one that runs and put them on mine. Imagine the cost for a non mechanic.

  • Used Maxima - Good Experience - 2000 Nissan Maxima

I bought the 2000 Nissan Maxima after being a loyal BMW follower for several years. So far I have not had any major issues. The car rides well, is very roomy, and very comfortable. I wish it handled as well as the BMW in the twisties and had a smoother and more direct shifting manual transmission though. Given the price that I paid for the Maxima, these are minor complaints. More concerning is the turning radius - I think a school bus cuts corners better. Nonethless, this is a great car for commuting and road trips. I would buy another Nissan product in a heartbeat . If I had to replace the Maxima today, I would have an Infiniti G35 in the garage. Its faster, handles better, and turns like a car instead of a truck.

  • Coulda been great, but... - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Bought in 2004 & loved it at first. Great pick up, good mileage & got compliments on the appearance. But too many reliability problems beyond usual maintenance... replaced coils, MAF, starter, front springs, shifter solenoid, and rear calipers so far. Afraid that O2 sensor and cat converter are next. Power seat motor died. Lots of rattles and squeaks - sounds like an aging taxi.

  • Nissan? Is it what it is made out to be? - 2000 Nissan Maxima

Overall, it is a fun car to drive with great power, but when the car got about 70,000 miles on it, little things would go wrong like shrtage in lights. In November 2003, I had the car serviced and they supposivly serviced everything! By the end of December the car was to the point where it did want to stay running. I found that it was the ingition coils and they said all 6 had to be replaced instead of the one bad one! $850 to replace them. The car has been in the shop four times from minor problems. PEOPLE, KEEP THE MANUAL YOU RECIEVE ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY! IT IS YOUR PROOF OF COVERAGE! If I had the chance to repurchase I WOULD NOT!

  • $1450+a tranny! - 2000 Nissan Maxima

I have had this car 4 yrs. During the 1st week of Feb. 05 I spent $1450 on replacing the ignition coils, mass airflow sensor & throttle response sensor. Nissan should of extended the warranty on the coils. Nissan is well aware that the coils are junk! In addition to the above the dealer replaced the A/T under warranty at 58,500 miles. I have never had a transmission fail at such low mileage! The rebuilt unit is only warranteed for 12/12. I am a preventive maintenance junkie. I installed an external A/T cooler in series with the factory unit. The transmission was serviced twice in 58,500 miles. This should never of happened. I WILL NEVER AGAIN BUY ANOTHER NISSAN!!

Bought this car used for a dealership and had nothing but good experiences. The car has punch to it and its options are unmatched. Resale price holds pretty high as well. Great looking car!
