This Year's Model Updates:

The ML430 is replaced by the ML500, which has a 5.0-liter V8 packing 288 horsepower. Over 1,100 parts of the truck have been modified, but the ML's exterior remains largely the same. New bumpers, clear-lens headlights and revised side mirrors are the most noticeable exterior changes. Inside, the center console sports a new look, and wood grain trim becomes standard on all models. A new automatic climate control system is now standard, and rear-seat passengers get dual cupholders and separate ventilation controls.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan from some angles, confounding COMAND navigation system.

  • Beware of the brake! - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This ML55 was meant for my wife, and she does love this SUV. But the biggest problem with it, is the braking system. It was a nightmare! The disc only lasted less than 10k, over the 4yrs of ownership. We have spend over $4k on the brake job alone! As I have found out that MB has one of the worst braking systems in the world, and the worst part is that they insisted there are nothing wrong with it! I strongly suggest all consumers not to purchase MB, until they resolve the problems. Most of the other problems are minimum, as it comes with all luxory cars. We drive BMWs now, its a step down. But at the least, we dont have to worry about the maintenance!

  • Cool car - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I just brought the ML320 and i think it is a great car. Easy and fun to drive. I also have the SL500 and the Ml320 is more comfortable. Easy to park. Looks great in every color. Eats a lot of gas. oo the acceleration is not to great, you can push the accelerater down to the floor and the car will still go the same speed, it needs a few seconds to build up. Other then that i think its a great car.

If I had a second chance, I would not buy it..

  • 2002 ML 500 - great to drive awful to maintain - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

Safety, performance (fun to drive), all weather drving capability - wonderful vehicle. Maintenance costs on the other hand are unacceptable for a vehicle of the this class. Problems, you bet - 4 rear main engine seals in 96,000 miles at $1,300 per repair, front lower ball joints at 25,000 miles, engine oil leaks, interior plastic trim pieces breaking, $775 for brakes every 22,000-25,000 miles, three door panels repainted - rust problems, $1100 to repair ventilation system, and many more.

8 years- the car looks brand new. Leather in a perfect condition. All electronics work great! Never had any problems with the car. Fun to drive! I love it.

  • Absolutely the BEST - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

If youre reading the negative comments posted here and wondering wether or not to buy an ML, trust me...... BUY ONE. This has got to be one of the best driving vehicles I have ever driven. After over a year of owning my ML 320, I still giggle at how smoothly, quietly, and comfortably this vechicle really is. I have owned other SUVs and believe me, there is no comparison. You have to experience it to understand.

  • ML500 Sport - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I went with the sport package and put aftermarket 295s with lowenhart rims, looks great with tinted windows. The Nav system is great once you figure out how to use it. Bose is fair. The small radio and Nav controls are a friggin joke. They have to make the car safe because you stand a great chance of having an accident while you change radio stations. Ive had two service problems.Wish I went for the AMG to get the bigger engine.

  • POOR CRAFTMANSHIP - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I had my SUV for 3 months and been to deeler couple of times due to poor product design: First the astray failed and have to keep the car overnight co, they have to take apart the median console area. Second the driver side sealer pop out they to replace the section that hold the fancy mercedes name as you step in the car. But its fun to drive, the luxury feature are great then again it drink gas. Overall Im happy, as long little things will hold.

  • A NICE SUV - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

This is one of the safest SUVs available in the market. The 3.2L engine has sufficient power for most applications. Handling and ride quality are good for a truck with a body-on- frame design. Climate Control is very efficient but the sun sensor is a little too sensitive. Reliability has been very good with 12,000 trouble free miles so far.

  • I wish I never wasted my time - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This car really sucks,.The radio gets louder and lower on its own, windows make noises, sunroof button isnt automatic, front ligther went on fire, radio controls are really far away from your seat so you have to move foward to change the station & Im preety tall61 so you cant blame it on my height, when I start it, it makes noises, coolent tube fixed twice after 5 months of buying the car, I had to fix it 2x, my brake pads wore out after 7months,Check engine light is always on, Gas Gas Gas need I say more? The gas is soo horrible I would I could curse at it. I can keep on going but I would hope you get the message that the car really sucks bad
