This Year's Model Updates:

The ML430 is replaced by the ML500, which has a 5.0-liter V8 packing 288 horsepower. Over 1,100 parts of the truck have been modified, but the ML's exterior remains largely the same. New bumpers, clear-lens headlights and revised side mirrors are the most noticeable exterior changes. Inside, the center console sports a new look, and wood grain trim becomes standard on all models. A new automatic climate control system is now standard, and rear-seat passengers get dual cupholders and separate ventilation controls.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan from some angles, confounding COMAND navigation system.

This is a sad example of a decent brand stuck on a poorly-made SUV. Mine has been in the shop 16 times in the last 12 months: engine mysteriously stalling, broken door handles, window lifters stopped working twice, malfunctioning turn signals, ripped seat covering, sunroof came loose, etc. Even the San Francisco Mercedes dealer (European Motors) is laughing about the quality of this car: "well, you know, it IS a truck made in Alabama after all". So if you want a Mercedes, buy one from Stuttgart.

  • Piece of Junk - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I bought it from my sister with very low mileage and extremely well maintained. Now I refer to this poorly built SUV as a "Piece of Junk!" It is plauged with problems. I have had interior parts falling off and breaking, sun roof deflectors broke and looking at the cheap plastic used in the build really disappointed me. Then the brake fluid drum breaks. Makes funny noises when driving and recently jerks badly when stopping at a light. Now a paint sealant or something seems to be peeling off at the back and dealer wants $500 a pop since I have run out of warranty! If anybody is intrested in filing a law suit, please count me in!

  • Ten Quarts of Oil Used in 3.000 miles - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I bought my wife a M-Class as she wanted a SUV. Thought Benz was suppose to be the best. She has been in the shop more in the past year with this vehicle than any other ever owned. The topper is the ten quarts of oil consumed in 3,000 miles. I want a new engine but dealership feels just rebuilding is ok. Better off buying a Mazada Tribute for half the cost!!!

Our ML320 has been in the shop 20 different times. The last time was to replace the rings. It was burning 2 quarts of oil in under 2000 miles.

What a sincere disappointment this vehicle has been. After having everything from pieces falling off of the inside to the car stalling out while driving, not to mention the week we couldnt get it to go into reverse causing us to cancel our vacation...the Merecedes area rep hung up on me when I asked if they could do anything to help us out since apparently we had a problem vehicle. Doesnt that make you feel good about dealing the the company? When it drives, we love the car but since it isnt that often...well, we are looking into something else for our next car.

  • NOT WORTH THE MONEY... - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Mercedes benz sales people are talented in their B.S. but for the money this one is DOG! Buy something else, Mercedes has cut too many corners to make this car affordable however it must looks like a Mercedes and acts like a Dodge! Happy hunting!

  • Chrysler side of the Family - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I own an SL500 and was impressed with the quality and craftmanship so when I need and SUV the ML was a logical choice. That is what I used to think. This think has been in the for service 6 times for electrical and cosmetic issues. My SL never has been so I am not unreasonable or a motor head that covers it etc... Overall do not buy this car for the money you can have an BMW X-5 with out the headaches!

  • not competitive with other suvs in class - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Mbz Doesnt hold its value at trade in time. Kind of tank like in ride and handling. Cheap interior and parts inside will fall off and dont feel good to the touch. Tiresome ride after 30 minutes.
