This Year's Model Updates:

All-wheel drive comes to the Mercedes' E-Class lineup via the E320 sedan and all-new E320 wagon. Like the rest of Mercedes' model lineup, E-Class cars formerly powered by an inline-six engine now receive a more fuel-efficient V6 unit that is also supposed to improve the cars' low-end response. The 1998 E-Class cars receive the benefit of BabySmart airbags which are able to detect the presence of a Mercedes' car seat in the front passenger seat and disable the front passenger airbag. BrakeAssist is also a new feature, which aids drivers' stopping distance in a panic-stop situation.

Pros:
  • Attractive, sporty, and refined, the E-Class cars are some of our favorites. Excellent fuel economy. Decent acceleration.

29 mpg on recent road trips, brakes are easy to replace and are outstanding, comfort on long trips, good resale, paint job equal to none and if you buy slightly used, one or two years old you dont take a big hit, but that goes for any car. Fast for a V6, great stereo with the Bose upgrade...worth it, smooth transmission and comes pretty well equiped as a base.

  • Get ready for headaches!!! - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

extremely frustrated . I have had annoying problems ever since buying. Passenger side mirror popped out when a child brushed with a knapsack. Had to have an entire new unit. new retaining clip would have worked. Pneumatic seat controls went with a $700 repair quote. Driving light bulb had to be replaced requiring a lift to get the car high enough to remove panels. Single windshield wiper is a royal pain. If there is not quite enough water on the window, the wiper skips across. A couple of hours of that will make you put a gun in your mouth!

  • Exhilarating Disapointment - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I was thrilled to get this wagon for our retirement vehicle. It had apprx one year left on the warranty; good thing! Rear load leveling shocks started leaking oil. Driver seat heater gave out. After warr. up, air flow sensor for engine gave out. Turn signal collar started rotating with lever. Leak developed in hose to rear load-level shocks, cost $354 to cut & reconnect hose.

  • My Opinion - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Very good MPG (almost 25 commuting, near 30 on the interstates) and solid feel. Super ride.

  • Happy with the Benz - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

So far, its great. Ive only had my E- 320 Sedan for 2 months, but overall I love it. I switched from a Lexus LS400 that was comfortable but not "fun" to drive and was a gas guzzler. This car is fuel efficient, fun to drive, and turns heads. The features are fine -- I miss heated seats (I bought a 1998 used with out that option) but the dual climate control makes up for it. Very good sound system, very comfortable seats, excellent safety features.

  • Update From a Year Ago - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

In my year of owning this car and putting about 20,000 miles on it, Now at 90,000 Miles, Ive had zero issues except with the rear power sunshade. It has a bad design and stopped working. I bought a used sunshade and installed it myself, cost $200. The dealer wanted $1000 for the part and to install! Other than that, this car has been incredibly reliable. The engine hasnt caused one issue for me and nothing in the interior has failed or fell apart (other than the sunshade). The fit and finish is hands down the best. This car is incredibly reliable and if you do all the maintenance yourself it wont cost much to maintain. It also gets great gas mileage for such a big car with a big V8

  • WARNING! Bad Engineering ahead - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

After five long years of owning my 98 E300 TD, I am left with a completely destroyed car due to poor engineering on MBZ. Turns out MBZ designed the transmission cooler INSIDE the radiator. The tranny cooler contains oil and the radiator contains water. Think about it. Yup! The two mixed last weekend and water went into the transmission, completely destroying the transmission, torque converter and engine electronics leaving me with a $7k bill for a car worth only $9k. Last summer, it was $4k to replace the diesel injectors. The summer before that, $2400 to replace the A/C unit and belts. The car only has 104k miles on it. It is now scrap metal. Unreal.

  • Great Car - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
