This Year's Model Updates:

The Mercedes-Benz E300D and E320 receive the driver-adaptable five-speed automatic transmission. The E-Class also has a smart sensor to determine if anyone is sitting in the passenger seat and to determine whether or not to deploy the airbag. The E420 can be had with a Sport Package.

Pros:
  • Beautiful nose, light-hearted design, rock-solid construction, and the panache of owning a Mercedes. What more could you want?

  • BIG GERMAN DISAPPOINTMENT - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

My 4th benz will be my last. OK styling. Enough power but with a noticeable acceleration lag. Even with all the auto gadgets the seats were not comfortable. A great geezer car but not much else. Trans went out at 60000.

I am very dissapointed with Mercedes and will no longer ever look to buy one in the future. I purchased my 1997 E420 from a reputable local dealer in 2005 with 54,000 original miles. My vehicle only has 66,000 miles to date and I have been forced to make costle repairs the last six months in excess of $4,000. As the vehicle is only worth $7,000 I feel I have been cheated by chosing such an unreliable hunk of junk. If you are looking for reliability and affordability, this is not the car for you! I have had to replace my lifters,a/c blower, seat motor, ignition, and lastly the radiator cracked. This car is easy to fall in love with its looks but has proven to be venomnous to my bank account!

  • Bad car for very high price - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Car had problems all after warantty period. Horn stopped $140. Outside mirror Broke $450. Left rear window fell down for no reason $300. Head gasket blew.(very common on these cars) $1950. Complained to dealer and Mercedes and got nothing. Will never buy another.

  • 1997 E420 is Junk - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I bought this car new in 1997 and it is one of the worst cars I ever purchased. It gave me lot of grief and frankly I wouldnt have been as disappointed if it had the Chrysler logo instead. Its motor had to be changed twice, All window motors broke down, speed sensor gave up, AC didnt work. Shock absorbers crumbled into pieces, and more - all in first 5 years! Frankly, I and some of my friends gave up buying Merc in favor of BMW. The car has only 93K miles- but it is a hunk of junk and been a LEMON. I have a 10 inch thick file with notes and problems that Mercedes had to fix. Stay away from MERCEDES, if you want peace in your life!

  • The Worst - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

My husband and I purchased this car from our niece, who was transferred to Hong Kong. We didnt even get it home before we started having problems. The front end needed repairs twice, electrical and wiring several times, 2 batteries, the alternator, the air conditioning. For the three years we have owned this vehicle, we have paid out nearly $10,000 for repairs. It is by far the worst car we have ever owned.
