Overview & Reviews
The Mercedes-Benz E300D and E320 receive the driver-adaptable five-speed automatic transmission. The E-Class also has a smart sensor to determine if anyone is sitting in the passenger seat and to determine whether or not to deploy the airbag. The E420 can be had with a Sport Package.
- Beautiful nose, light-hearted design, rock-solid construction, and the panache of owning a Mercedes. What more could you want?

Oil leak, major repair - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By Dennis - January 27 - 3:23 amI bought this car with 50,000 miles, and it looked showroom condition. In the last two years, I have had numerous maintenance costs, up to about 6000 and now it needs about 2 to 3000 to fix oil leak, and the catalytic converters need replaced, 1500 bucks more. Apparently everyone knows about the oil leak problem with these models. This was my first Mercedes, and last.

Great Vrooom - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By R. Ravenstad - December 7 - 10:00 amGreat to drive on gentle country roads with the sunroof open and the Bose system jammin. Feels like a Benz is suppose to. It makes you feel like water on moderately crowded freeways.

Small problems excepted - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By Mike Y - November 28 - 11:03 pmI was in love with this car since I first saw it 6 years ago. The looks are incredible. I bought it last March. I kept getting a check engine light - turned out to be a recall that was never corrected. The wheels have been balanced 6 times, and theyre still a little bit off. I bought an after market warranty that I have used several times. All of these little problems aside - it is the best looking car in the world, and it turn heads. I love the feeling of driving a Mercedes

1997 E420 is Junk - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By AD - November 16 - 10:00 amI bought this car new in 1997 and it is one of the worst cars I ever purchased. It gave me lot of grief and frankly I wouldnt have been as disappointed if it had the Chrysler logo instead. Its motor had to be changed twice, All window motors broke down, speed sensor gave up, AC didnt work. Shock absorbers crumbled into pieces, and more - all in first 5 years! Frankly, I and some of my friends gave up buying Merc in favor of BMW. The car has only 93K miles- but it is a hunk of junk and been a LEMON. I have a 10 inch thick file with notes and problems that Mercedes had to fix. Stay away from MERCEDES, if you want peace in your life!

134k Miles and counting! - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By chevegan - October 12 - 6:03 pmMy father purchased this car in 1999 at the end of his friends lease for $36,500. The car has been nothing but a joy. It has every single option that the dealer + merc had to offer at the time. In all these years shes been so good to us. Now with the economy i sold off my cars and started driving the merc which was sitting for 2 years. Issues? No. Creaks? Squeeks? Rattles? NONONO. I love this car. yes 91 octane BUT i Average 22mpg in mostly L.A. traffic. Note one thing that all these e-classes seem to need a new steering pump ONLY since it starts to leak. Other than that not ONE crazy repair unlike the other guys rant. Can you say LEMON? or maybe hes hard on his cars what can i say.

Best Car Ever - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By Cindy - September 20 - 4:03 pmThe best ride ever! I bought this car new and drove it for over 11 years. Well made and very low maintenance and great gas mileage for a V8. Unfortunately, I loaned it to a friend that wrecked it. I miss my wonderful car.

Not Thrilled with MB - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By LJ - June 24 - 10:00 amI bought this car used and loved the style of it. I have had several problems with it including replacing both electric window motors in the back and constantly have light bulbs blowing out. The electric seats will move in the opposite direction when pushing the buttons. I took out a BMW 540 yesterday and couldnt believe the pickup vs. the E420.

I got it for my 16th b-day - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By rodgerdodger90 - December 2 - 8:30 pmDont get me wrong here, Mercedes-Benz makes some great cars and I believe this is one of the greatest. My mom had it first, then she bought the 2000 S-Class and gave this to me. this car has great pick-up speed, never looks old really, and its simple and practical luxury. Catches the eye everywhere you go and never ashamed to valet park. I think its their best sedan.

Best Ride! - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By accumulator - October 18 - 2:00 amThis car drives the best of any comparable cars! Smooth and stable cornering, solid feel, and impressive acceleration. Having owned Lexus for many years, I believe the quality of the details are more superior on the Lexus but the LS400 cannot compete with this one on the quality of the ride. Get used to more stares and attention driving a Mercedes compared to other luxury cars!

My last Mercedes - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
By Aphra - August 23 - 9:36 pmThis is my third and last Mercedes. Since buying it in 2003 I have replaced the transmission, radiator, electrical system, plus 3-sets of tires, 4 sets of brakes. In 2008, I spent $4700 on car repairs alone! I wish I had sold this car years ago! My other two cars were trouble free but they were diesels. Its a pretty car from the exterior but the interior has not worn well
