This Year's Model Updates:

The Mercedes-Benz E300D and E320 receive the driver-adaptable five-speed automatic transmission. The E-Class also has a smart sensor to determine if anyone is sitting in the passenger seat and to determine whether or not to deploy the airbag. The E420 can be had with a Sport Package.

Pros:
  • Beautiful nose, light-hearted design, rock-solid construction, and the panache of owning a Mercedes. What more could you want?

I was nervous purchasing my Mercedes at first because of idiot who dont really know what they are talking about I bought this car with 220k on it and it had a few issues when I bought it but it was such a great deal I bought it knowing it would be needing some repair as with any used vehicle with this many miles so I went in expecting to find the parts would be very expensive to my surprise not any more expensive than any domestic car out there I love this car it is easy to service and drives like a dream and is great on gas as well 30 mpg

  • Severely disappointed - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Bought this car used from the original owner in 2002, with only 16,000 miles on it, and thought "what could go wrong with such low mileage". Plus my intention was to only drive this car to and from work, which averages about 8,000 miles/year. Well, first the electrical wires to the drivers side front headlights kept "coming lose", which cost $400.00 to fix. Then the A/C went out, along with oil leakage and transmission problems, which totaled to $5,000.00. I wish I have stayed with buying Toyota or Subaru, which are far more reliable.

A real sleeper. comfortable and powerful auto. Cheaper to run than a 1999 Volvo S80

  • This is my third MB - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

This is my third MB, and my second diesel, and I have enjoyed every one. Even though the 97 Diesel in a non turbo it has plenty of go. My fuel mileage averages upper 20s around town to low thirties on the highway. I bought the car with 106K on the odo and after two years and at 135K on the odo the only major maintenance required has been changing the glow plugs, which requires pulling the intake manifold. The car is a joy to drive, and I constantly get compliments on its looks. I guess I am just fortunate because I have not experienced the problems with any of my MBs that so many others in this forum seem to have. I hope to always be fortunate enough to own an MB.

  • I Expected More From Benz - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Bought this 97 E320 used in early 2002. I now have 180,000 miles on it. Engine remains reliable, but thats about it. My entire instrument panel is not functioning (dealer replaced ignition switch, which did nothing!!). AC died 2 years ago (dealer replaced dash heating unit, which did nothing!!) Car is rusting badly.

  • Exceeds Expectations - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Purchased an off lease from dealer. Had 49.5K miles. Needed align and new tires. Having to learn how to drive RWD in KC winters. I have trouble falling in love with cars after having been a sales rep who got company cars for so long. I LOVE THIS CAR!! The drive, the feel, the quality even after the miles and years are exceeding my expectations. Now if I can only keep the rednecks with pickkups and American made cars from wanting to park too close to me to improve the looks of their vehicles....... and dinging my car......

  • !st time Mercedes owner - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

As a first time owner of a Mercedes, I am not impressed. The seating is not comfortable. No adjustable lumbar support and Im still trying to figure out what component of the seat frame is either loose or in need of replacement The seat "Pops" upon acceleration, deceleration or cornering. Im glad I didnt dish out the big bucks for a new model. This is 5 yrs. old. Next car will be a Lexus.

  • Get a good Pre-Purchase inspection - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Excellent gas mileage for a car this large (an honest 28mpg plus on the road). Good power, quiet, Only had one problem so far; a stuck relay kept the smog pump on after I shut off the engine which burned up the pump. A $1000 repair that wasnt necessary. Bad design here--- Overall i you get a good one, I think its an excellent second choice for a family. Its a better used buy then a C class. I wouldnt use it as a daily driver, though. Also, get a good, honest independent mechanic. These cars will send you to the poorhouse quick if youre not careful.

  • Fuel System Nightmare - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

We love this car BUT, it has had serious fuel system problems. The fuel injector pump has been replaced at 50K and 90K miles. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere when it went out at 90K. A long walk with no cell service in the area.Thank God for the 100K extended warranty we bought or we would have been out over $3K each time. Our previous diesel a 1982 240D ran over 300K miles with no problems. We wanted one of the new CDI diesels but now we are not so sure.
