This Year's Model Updates:

Though it might not look different, the E-Class receives a substantial freshening for 2000, with an entirely new front end and a revised interior. Stability control, a Touch Shift automanual transmission, and side airbags for all outboard seating positions are now standard. A multifunction steering wheel debuts, and E430 models can be equipped with 4matic all-wheel drive. TeleAid, a cellular emergency service, is standard and the confounding COMAND system is optional. For 2000, free maintenance is provided for the duration of the warranty period. The E300 turbodiesel model has been dropped. Other changes are limited to minor cosmetic and functional upgrades.

Pros:
  • Distinctive good looks, lots of standard and optional safety equipment, free maintenance for duration of warranty, available all-wheel drive, refined powertrains, rock-solid engineering.
Cons:
  • Stately rather than sporty, gimmicky COMAND system option.

The best thing about the E320 is the turning radius. The car lacks any excitement inside the cabin. The model has not changed much through 2003 that I can see. It does have a stylish look. The amenities are very scarce such as a very poor drink holder; defective computer which gives out false messages; seats are average condition and the leather is so so. You have to be careful driving over a bump if you have a beverage in the drink holder. If the liquid should spill a bit, it can sort out the shifting linkage which is positioned in front of the holder. I have owned my last Mercedes.

  • Not the same MB of old - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Purchased 2000 E320 to replace 1991 E class. Initially the car was fine, but soon to discover poor paint, easily chipped with instant rust and elect problems. Changed more bulbs in this cars than my past 4 cars in total. Never rust on 2 prior MBs, every chip, no matter how small rusts. Spent over 2K to date on repairs. Found out later, car had been damaged and part repainted before sold. Internet is full of paint complaints on this series. Only 56k to date, cant affort to get rid of it. Worth only half what I got for my 91 at 9 yrs. old. Cant even contact zone svc mgr. MBUSA says the dealer is my only contact. MB=junk

  • Never again - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I have had trouble with my E430 since day one. The passenger power window jammed at the down postion. At 20k miles the radio went dead. Dealer repaired it and it went dead once more at 21k miles. At 30k miles the power locks always lock back when opened. Nothin else went wrong untill 39k miles when the car didnt recognize none of my keys. I gave up due to the fact that the warranty was about to end and I went and bought an Jaguar S-type which is a wonderful car that gives me no problems unlike MBs E430.

  • Nice family car - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I bought this car to replace our wrecked 97 E420 (saved our lives!) for my wife. Its been a great family car - both comfortable and reliable, and the safety factor is unmatched.

I always wanted an E320 4-Matic - Bought it as a leftover and was satisfied with the price. 6 months after the purchase is when it started to cause headache after headache. Heated seat stopped working, radio stopped working and had to be replaced, passenger window goes down by itself and the transfer cas had to be repalced because of knocking noise and leaking oil on my garage floor. Have had it back 8 times to the dealer since purchased, what a hassle. For the price you pay for a Mercedes you should get a quality piece of machinery.

The car is beautiful and a real eye catcher. Fit and finish are top quality. However, since three months into ownership I have been plagued with false/positive alerts for brakes, coolant, and the auto climate control is hit or miss. In addition, my radio lcd display blanks out and above all if I dont shift into N or P after R, the transmission winds out and bangs into lower gear. This causes me to have to pull over and either re-shift into N or P or restart the car. Once the car is restarted, all systems return to normal. The dealer hasnt been able to correct and I am demanding an open-ended warranty or new car.

  • Hard to trade in this elegant workhorse - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I live in Minnesota, so bought the car new with the 4matic feature. I love the way it looks inside and out and it has been mechanically very very reliable. I only have 50000 miles on it now in 2008 and it is starting to show its age a bit. The most serious things that have broken are both rear window power lifts, but the repair costs were not outrageous. Adequately powered by todays standards (barely), still I cant bear to part with it. And it looks better than the new ones.

  • Ride is great. Reliability is horrid. - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Its in the shop as we speak. $650 sparkplug wire. If its electrical it is broken or has been repaired in the past. Lighted interior mirrors are $300. Over a $1,000 quoted to fix exterior temp reading LCD. I am 51 years old and owned many cars in my life, but this one has been towed and in for repair more than all the others combined. My other 3 vehicles are Toyota products. I will be buying another one soon and fortunately will shed my Benz before I am handed a $4,000 bill for something unexpected. Just incredible. Benz-Chrysler wont last long producing such a low reliability auto. Fool me once shame on you...but you wont fool me twice.

  • No More Quality - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This is a beautiful car that handles well and has a plush ride. However, Mercedes quality is nowhere to be found. This car has been in the shop about 2 dozen times in less than three years. Both rear windows have failed. Brake, oxygen, and fuel level sensors have been replaced. The dash cover cracked and the sun visor (cheap vanity mirror) has been replaced 4 times! Cheap center console has never worked properly. The console doors are misaligned, they rub, and sometimes will not close at all. Light bulb failures in dash (twice), headlights (twice, once fuse), and brake lights (twice). The latest problem is with an intermittent A/C fan.

  • Its the Little Things That Hurt - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I had always wanted an E-Class Mercedes -- until I got one. Dont get me wrong: The car was beautiful and stylish. It is unfortunate that there were so many part defects such that it needed to be in the shop for about a dozen times over the three years that I owned the car. On top of the defects, the parts were continually replaced with the same defective parts, causing the problems to reappear every so often. Problems included the back windows getting stuck in the down position, the A/C breaking, the radio (which was supposed to increase in volume as your speed increases) would change volume wildly, and more. Very disappointing.
