This Year's Model Updates:

The Mercedes-Benz E300D and E320 receive the driver-adaptable five-speed automatic transmission. The E-Class also has a smart sensor to determine if anyone is sitting in the passenger seat and to determine whether or not to deploy the airbag. The E420 can be had with a Sport Package.

Pros:
  • Beautiful nose, light-hearted design, rock-solid construction, and the panache of owning a Mercedes. What more could you want?

A real sleeper. comfortable and powerful auto. Cheaper to run than a 1999 Volvo S80

Bought this 97 E320 used in early 2002. I now have 180,000 miles on it. Engine remains reliable, but thats about it. My entire instrument panel is not functioning (dealer replaced ignition switch, which did nothing!!). AC died 2 years ago (dealer replaced dash heating unit, which did nothing!!) Car is rusting badly.

Excellent gas mileage for a car this large (an honest 28mpg plus on the road). Good power, quiet, Only had one problem so far; a stuck relay kept the smog pump on after I shut off the engine which burned up the pump. A $1000 repair that wasnt necessary. Bad design here--- Overall i you get a good one, I think its an excellent second choice for a family. Its a better used buy then a C class. I wouldnt use it as a daily driver, though. Also, get a good, honest independent mechanic. These cars will send you to the poorhouse quick if youre not careful.

  • Fuel System Nightmare - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

We love this car BUT, it has had serious fuel system problems. The fuel injector pump has been replaced at 50K and 90K miles. We were stranded in the middle of nowhere when it went out at 90K. A long walk with no cell service in the area.Thank God for the 100K extended warranty we bought or we would have been out over $3K each time. Our previous diesel a 1982 240D ran over 300K miles with no problems. We wanted one of the new CDI diesels but now we are not so sure.

My father purchased this car in 1999 at the end of his friends lease for $36,500. The car has been nothing but a joy. It has every single option that the dealer + merc had to offer at the time. In all these years shes been so good to us. Now with the economy i sold off my cars and started driving the merc which was sitting for 2 years. Issues? No. Creaks? Squeeks? Rattles? NONONO. I love this car. yes 91 octane BUT i Average 22mpg in mostly L.A. traffic. Note one thing that all these e-classes seem to need a new steering pump ONLY since it starts to leak. Other than that not ONE crazy repair unlike the other guys rant. Can you say LEMON? or maybe hes hard on his cars what can i say.

  • Best Ride! - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This car drives the best of any comparable cars! Smooth and stable cornering, solid feel, and impressive acceleration. Having owned Lexus for many years, I believe the quality of the details are more superior on the Lexus but the LS400 cannot compete with this one on the quality of the ride. Get used to more stares and attention driving a Mercedes compared to other luxury cars!

  • MBZ and I like IT!!!!! - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I bought this car from San Ramon German Motors. It had 22000 miles when I got it. It has 25k now. Awsome car. The sound system is remarkable. The interior is well layed out. Everything is were you need it. I especially like the Adjustable seats. The integrated key and infrared fob thing is one of the best parts....No seperate fob. (jay)

I turn heads and people cant believe what you can get them for. However, my gripe is that in six months, it has been in to the dealership five times at least. Starmark is great but beware many things are not covered, I have paid $1000 out of pocket already and claimed $2000 more. And I also have the popping seat frame on acceleration etc. as another reviewer mentioned.(not covered by starmark). This is truly a love/hate relationship and my local service dept. hasnt impressed me with misdiagnoses only to be fixed at another dealership. Hope you all wont be as unlucky as me. In closing though this car is a wonderful combination of luxury and sport feel.

  • E420 Review - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I bought this car used, with extra low milage, from an owner in Italy. Although I was never a MB nut, I can see why people love the brand. It is, for a 13 year old car, a step above most cars that are supposedly younger, better etc. and cost the same if not more. While reliability is an issue in the W210s, you cant expect a 13 year old car to be flawless or not experience any mechanical failures from wear and tear. From my research, the W210s are the last of the proper German engineered and assembled MBs (some say the W124s were the last such breed). If you are planning on buying a used W210, especially the E420, take it to an honest MB dealer and get it thoroughly checked. Then enjoy.
