Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

We have had a few problems, but overall very good luck with this vehicle. 123,000 miles on the car. Break rotors warped and replaced 3 times. Chrysler finally paid for a really good set of slotted rotors (class action suit) and we have had no problems since. A few lights have burned out and a seat heater went out. Overall very pleased with the SUV. Love the smooth, tiny, but powerful V8 engine.

When I first bought the Jeep I loved it. Fun to drive, looks great. Now it has become a hazard and fear to drive. It loves to just quit for no reason. I could be on the highway going 60 MPH and it just quits! Then trying to steer off the hwy with no power steering is always fun. It also likes to buck, or just shut off when slowing down for traffic lights or turns. I now hate driving it. I have taken it to several mechanics and they use the computer to read the codes and all it tells them is "Vapor Locks" None of them can fix it. They all tell me to get rid of it. I cant because I still owe to much. So I will drive it til the wheels fall off or it kills me.

  • Best car ever! - 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My aunt bought the car new in late 92, then sold it to my grandfather in 99, and he then gave it to me as my first car. The car now has 220K miles on it. Ive only had to replace the valve gasket and the brake booster. I dont think Ive ever driven a more reliable car. I havent taken very good care of it, I know the rest of my family abused it, but it still keeps running. Im now considering selling it to pay for repairs on my Volvo S60. I wished I would have just invested money in fixing up my Jeep instead of buying the Volvo.

We bought this Jeep for the wife and kid, used it for a year and then #2 showed up, so we went to a minivan. Thats when I took over. This truck has been used for beach driving, mountain 4-wheeling, daily commuter and at one point I used it for carpentry work and it was loaded down with a compressor, saws, nail guns, etc. Ive carried 6x6s from Home Depot in it, 10 sheets of plywood on the roof; this truck just wont stop. Gas mileage is now getting to me, but I just cant let go of it, its like family. Change the oil, keep it clean and it will run forever.

I have replaced tires, belts, fluids regularly. The only non-routine expenses have been replacing the air-conditioner and the boot... A very inexpensive vehicle for us.

  • Overall Good Quality - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Second Grand Cherokee that my wife and I have owned. First was a 93 with the I-6 cylinder which was a little under powered for towing a medium sized trailer (17). The 96 has the 5.2 liter (318 cid) which has been more than adequate. The only problem we have had with the vehicle is an automatic transmission rebuild at 100, 000 miles. I felt this was totally unacceptable for a transmission to fail at this mileage and the response from the dealership was less than what we had hoped for.

  • Not bad for a Jeep - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Other than the fact that its a pure gas hog, I love this vehicle. I average about 13 or 14 mpg in the city and about 18 or 19 mpg on the highway. Theres plenty of storage, which is nice, and the factory stereo system was so good that I kept it. Thats a first for me. Usually, the first thing I do is yank out the factory stereo and pop in a high-powered sound machine. Its also very fun to drive. As far as comfort though, its not the best car. Its a little cramped for me, plus the steering wheel is a little hard to turn. Other than that, its fine.

  • Great Experience - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My 2001 Limited is great. The exterior styling is sharp while the interior quality is exceptional. Ive owned 28 vehicles since I started driving and this is one of the best vehicles that I have owned. And no...my previous fleet did not include Gremlins, Pintos or Ygos! My Jeep experience has ranked up there with my Infiniti and Lexus experiences.
