This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

Excellent ride.. Mechanical problems happen much too early. Problem with brakes....

  • Reliable 4WD Un Reliable Brakes - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Great 4WD ability in the snow/ice and when I surf fish the beaches of North Carolina.I have helped several of the "so called SUVs" get un stuck. Most of the small street SUVs just cant handle the harsher off road conditions. The main flaw of the vehicle is its brakes. I had to turn or replace the front rotors 4 times in 40,000 miles only onced covered under warranty at the 11,000 mile mark.I suggest this vehicle for any one that needs a good 4 wheel drive.I would rate my vehicle as dependable. Only one mechanical failure beside the common brake problem which was quickly taken care of under warranty. (Trans sensor)

I bought the Jeep used with 18,000 miles. This is the fifth Jeep Cherokee I have owned, the second Grand Cherokee, and is the best. The interior fit and finish is exceptional; the car is very well appointed and rich in its presentation. I have had no repairs to date, with the mileage now at 64,000. It has been an excellent car. It gets approx. 16-18 MPG around the city, and 20-22 MPG on a straight highway trip.

Our second Jeep. This limited v8 model is a keeper even though there have been the usual Jeep failings 1) brake calipers (which after the third time Jeep replaced on a recall with some super slotted disks for free. No problems since then). 2) hood struts ($300 to replace so still broken. We never have occasion to go under the hood anyway). 3) seat heater. 4) heater box mechanism. All in all very few repairs for 147,000 and nine years use. We are very pleased with this vehicle

Ive owned this Jeep for about 5 years now and have put about 40,000 miles on it. Total mileage now 110,000. Total upkeep expenses approx $4500 including batteries twice. I think $75 a month upkeep is not bad considering all. The strong points with my Jeep are the Engine and Drive Train. Weak points electronics. I can attribute even the electronics problems to wear and tear though.

This is the second Jeep Ive driven. Own a 1998 also. Seems there is a recurring problem with the rear ends of jeeps. Loud noise or screech when going over bumps or putting car in reverse. Problems with 2001 brakes and with window regulators. Replaced passenger side in July. Now the drivers side is stuck in the up position til I can fix it. The hood and tail gate dont stay up. Sensor 2 light goes off and on. I like the way it handles and goes anywhere in the snow. I feel pretty safe driving it but worry about the brakes and Windows. Have never replaced window regulators ever before and have driven many different makes and models of cars.

A Comfortable ride, no doubt. However, lots of issues. Feels unstable a lot of times while driving. Maybe because it is a 2WD and not a 4WD. Already had rotors fixed. Poor fuel efficiency.

I cant say enough good things about my Jeep. I bought it used with 18,000 miles on it. I finally turned it in at 120,000 due to the age on the car gas prices creeping up to $4 a gallon. This jeep got about 18-19 avg. It was reliable and durable and comfortable. Fun to drive and looked good as well.
