Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • LOVE my Grand Cherokee Laredo!!!! - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

First bought a Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo in 1994. It lasted me 10 years with NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM. It was only this year, 2004, that I had a few issues...with the air and transmission. But thats pretty darn amazing! Hated to trade my baby in, but decided it made sense. Now I just bought the newest Laredo and its been just incredible. Could not ask for more with comfort, the look -- and it drives beautifully. Your ratings are WAY OFF, as far as Im concerned. THE BEST!!!!! Ed Connolly Stony Point, NY

Drives very smoothly on the road and is dead silent. I dont know why its getting bad reviews for on-road performance. Ive never had a smoother ride.

  • Rough Idle - 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Original owner, now 122,000 miles as of Jan 03. Solid car, good gas mileage and no significant mtce problems (yet). However, very rough engine (4.7L) idle (approx 550 rpms)and mechanics can not fix it.

Look before you leap. If you are in the market for a fun to drive SUV, this jeep offers a smooth ride. However, for the $45k plus, you are better off with choosing a luxury model, so you have something to show for it. While they claim, the seats are leather, they feel and smell like plastic or as some marketing genius dubbed it, leatherette. The backseat is so stiff that you can barely make it around the block without a backache. Same for front seats, no lumbar! Engine revs a lot, between shifting and no one needs to remind you how often you will be handing the gas attendant $50+ to fill er up. Im stuck in a lease, but the good news, I can just hand the keys over and say so long.

  • The Jeep Overland Rocket - 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I just purchased my 03 Overland and this Jeep is not only loaded with luxury, it is loaded with power. That HO engine is amazing! Quite honestly, I have never driven an SUV with so much power that handled so well. I almost bought a Yukon because I wanted the power and could only find it in a big SUV. I purchased the Overland because I got the power I wanted without the hassle of parking such a big vehicle. Besides, this is the sharpest looking SUV on the road.

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee with no complaints - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

One of the better vehicles I have ever owned. It reminds me of my 72 Nova but without all the problems, and I never had to keep tools onboard. Nice firm ride on the road and great off road ride. Handles all the bumps and ditches with ease. The only complaint I have is the location of the overdrive cutoff switch. It was hard to see. I like this Grand Cherokee so much that I bought another in 2004.

  • Poor Longevity - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

We have had no problems with any part of our Jeep.....other than mechanical & electrical. We spend around $1200 a year in maintenance stemming from one of the two. Granted the majority of the cost involved is labor, but who has a full service auto repair shop in their garage? Working in the engine area of the Jeep is tight quarters! Dont get me wrong - We love our Jeep, expenses and all! Watch out for the main ABS control unit - its a lemon!
