Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

OK. Where to begin? First the good stuff. The Jeep Grand Cherokee drives like a big friendly Teddy Bear, not like a pickup truck. It looks just as friendly, but I bought the car for perceived Jeep toughness, reliability and quality; however I found the Jeep lacking in those characteristics. Brakes shot at 25K, fuel pump fried at 27K, transmission done at 37K, water pump shot at 40K, persistent front end shimmy not fixed with tire balancing and universal joint replacement, etc. Wouldnt buy another one. The Honda-Nissan-Toyota SUV products are far superior.

I was excited to purchase this vehicle after doing much research on it. This is my first American car, but I think after this purchase, I will never buy American again. Its recall after recall and the parts are rarely available. Several times Ive tried to get into my car and the remote didnt work, didnt recognize the key nor did it start. I love the ride of the truck and the look, but its not worth it in the long run. I need a safer vehicle and Im disappointed that this did not make the mark.

Brand New 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has been in the shop for 18 days in the 38, I have owned the car. Transmission phantom shifts and revs unprovoked. There is a knocking in the front end when braking that the dealer said was an issue then came back to say that knocking is "normal" for all 2014 JGC. Also the same climate issues that other reviews state. I am a lifelong Jeep customer. Owned 6 in 20 years. This will be our last one.

  • AVOID!!!!! - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Car is at the dealer for its 3rd set of warped brake rotors in less than 2 years, at $550 per set (incl labor). Yes, theres a TSB calling for replacement of calipers, pads and rotors, but dealer says Chrysler wont pay for it because the car was purchased used, is out of warranty, and my extended warranty (EasyCare) wont cover them because "they are still working". NTSB, where are you???? Daimler-Chrysler, why are you allowing unsafe vehicles on the road??? Youve lost a loyal customer, and all my friends will hear about it.

I got my Jeep a little over a month ago and I am already having problems with it. About 2 weeks after I got the thing it started dinging saying the hatchback was open so I got out and tried closing it several times, but that didnt work and my entire drive home from Memphis, the car was dinging but the door was NOT open! Also, the car alarm would randomly go off and a couple of times I have simply sat at a stop light then not been able to go once the light turned green, which scared the crap out of me! I finally got it to go by restarting it. The wiring is horrible in this car and Im afraid to drive it now because it shuts off.I will definitely be paying a visit to the dealership.

  • More Fun Than You Ever Thought Possible! - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I love my Jeep SRT8. I own a number of pricey vehicles and more times than not, I choose my SRT8 Jeep. It is so powerful, quick, with a great sound! I love to throw my bike in the back and head to the mountains or beach - fast! Its fun, its affordable and its rare. By the way the seats are the most comfortable I have ever enjoyed in a vehicle under $100K. Buy it now, before the Feds find out how much fun we are having!

  • Short Life, Big Probem - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased on 3/24/05. On 3/29/05 after 147 miles, heard a tremendous "bang" underneath car. Entire car shook. Much clanking and banging under car before I got it to road shoulder. Towed to dealer. Front transfer case separated from chassis. Dealer does not know why. Chrysler now involved. Car has been in dealer shop since 3/29. Car rides well, 4.7 liter big enough to move it, comfortable, gas mileage unknown at this time. My 2002 Grand Cherokee with same engine delivered 15-16 city and 20 or slightly better on the open road.

  • This vehicle stinks! - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this vehicle new and have had nothing but issues with it. My husband and I have had it towed twice (should have towed it a third time but we limped it into the service department). This vehicle gave out on a busy highway in the passing lane late one night on my way home from work. On another trip the car would not shift out of 1st gear (this was one week after it was supposedly fixed). While driving, the car will suddenly drop into first or second gear. Sometimes when shifting from reverse to drive, the car just seizes up and wont do anything. Today, the car wont even start. I cant wait to trade it in and purchase a Ford. Much more reliable and many less headaches.

  • Our 6th Grand Cherokee - 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Everything considered - this is far and away the best GC that we have ever owned. The 2004 Overland that we traded in was great - but this one really shines. The design and build quality seem far superior than previous years. The engine - although thirsty at almost all speeds - is responsive and relatively quiet for its size. We had 34" of snow during December and the Jeep navigated the hills and drifts with ease. Far better in fact than our Wrangler. The MyGig Nav system / audio is great.

  • My 2005 Grand Cherokee - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

First of all, I am 24 and this is my first SUV. My Jeep rides very smooth. I chose the V6 model due to rising gas costs (I was used to the gas economy of a 2001 Honda Accord EX). So far, I am still in love with this SUV. Most of my driving is done on the HWY, so Im not too upset at the fuel economy. I get around 21MPG on the HWY and in the city and it can dip to about 17MPG. The AC blows great in the summertime. The engine does sound good when revved. I have noticed a little sputtering from time to time.
