Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

Good car. Excellent for long trips. Gas mileage on highway, 18.2. Poor mileage around town.

  • good but could be better - 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

It has been a good auto. We have had only one problem with the power window, but it was still under warranty and was fixed with no problems. We previously owned a 95 Explorer. The Jeep has a lot better ride but the Explorer drove better. As far as power they are about equal. We have the 6 cylinder, I would suggest going with the V8. The 6 cylinders fuel mileage is poor and lacks power.

If you dont think this SRT8 isnt fast, go race a new Porsche Cayenne Twin Turbo S with 525 HP. This new Jeep is faster to 60 MPH. You will have him by better than half a car length. At 3500 miles it really starts to run and even the gas mileage picked up a mile per gallon around town. Now if I can figure out how to get a supercharger on this Jeep.

Leased 06 Grand Cherokee with 3.7L V6 engine and auto transmission. First 30 days spent back at the dealer to fix these issues: Leakage through left A-pillar, turned out to be windshield seal; engine light on, fixed once, came on again 3 days later, fixed one more time; extremely unpleasant rattle on left side of IP, dealer tried to fix it twice, it got better, but once in a while youd steal hear it. Gas mileage averaged 16 mpg mostly city driving. Positive features: loved during winter time, great on snow, much quieter interior, good driving dynamics, good power. Glad it was a lease, just turned it in and walked away from the dealer.

  • Loved and hated it - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I loved my Grand Cherokee and it was a perfect fit for me at 63. But it had plenty of issues... Poor fuel efficiency became a pain as gas kept rising higher and higher. The belt in 3 of the 4 power windows broke at various times, causing the windows to sink down into the door. Always seemed to happen during the winter when it was freezing. Just last week my engine failed and needed to be replaced. Had about 90,000 miles on my jeep. $6000 for a new engine, $3000 for a rebuilt engine. Decided to get a new car instead. Im excited to be getting 28 mpg with my new car, but Ill miss the Grand Cherokee.

  • second wj. probably last.. - 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee

On my second wj, this time a v8. Pretty fun vehicle, transmission went out at 150k miles but dealer paid for a new 1. Only reason this 1 is my last is because I now want a wk2. Love my v8 power & sound. Love these things

  • Good SUV! - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I have owned my 2004 since 2006. Bought with 85k miles and now have over 172k miles. Only minor repairs during life of vehicle so far. Very comfortable, performance lacking big time but isnt a V8, MPG awful! Probably get 12-14 MPG on average. Most get is 18MPG hwy but with very conservative driving. Only major repairs is a transmission solenoid about 450 at 160k miles, fuel pump at 90k miles (ran the gas too low for a long period of time my own fault). Other than that change all fluids when your supposed to and has been a good reliable vehicle for me.

  • ALMOST MY PERFECT CAR! - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I absolutely fell in love with the looks of this car. Its the 9th car Ive owned, but it is my favorite! The size is perfect for me; not too big, not too small. Purchased the Rocky Mountain Edition and love the extras such as leather seats, Sirius radio, and sun roof. I have owned this car for 4 months and the only complaint I have is that it is presently in the shop because my sun roof was leaking through the overhead console after a few weeks of continuous rain. Also I went from a V8 Durango and I sometimes get frustrated going up hills with the 3.7 V6, seems to downshift. Thought buying a V6 would save on gas. Driving around town or on the highway, its ZIPPY.

  • We must have got the lemon... - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Everyone loves their Jeep. I want to love ours but I think we metro Mitsubishi sold us the only Jeep lemon in Jeep history. At 89,000 miles we thought it was an awesome deal @ 5k. We were told it ran great with no problems but check engine comes on each time we drive it, gas gauge always says empty, overdrive doesnt work, power Windows dont always work from back seat & the sunroof had to get fixed from dealer the evening of the day we picked it up. Been to the shop 3 times to have it fixed with bills adding up to more than a grand. All I can see is my $$$$$ out the window.
