Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

You see a lot of negative reviews for these cars but Ive been happy with mine. Its up to 145,000 miles and have had very few problems. Gas mileage blows, but duh, its a V8. Also, I live in VT so getting to the slopes in any conditions is a priority and this thing gets the job done in style!

Please make sure the transmission is checked before you put your name on paper. They are having problems with water getting into the transmission. I had mine flushed several times and I kept telling them it is not driving right. Of course they say, the computer is not coming up with any codes. Well coming home from two nights ago my transmission went out on a major highway. This is the fourth time that it is in the service dept. I am glad I live in Florida where there is a lemon law.

I lease these very 3 yrs or so - this is my 4th Jeep grand Cherokee and by far the best one yet. I got it with the Hemi 5.7L engine which while it is not great on gas, is a lot of fun to drive. It has amazing power and speed for an SUV.

  • Good SUV, but lots of minor problems - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought this GC new in 2001, and really enjoyed it for the first 3 years or so, with just routine maintenance. For an SUV, Im happy with the MPG at 20-21. I still have enjoyed driving it, in the last few years several minor (and 1 major) problems have popped up. Headlight assembly cracked, causing the inside casing to become fogged. Each of the front power windows have failed (causing the window to slip down in the door. Of course, the first time this happened it was raining, the second time it was about 102 degrees!!! Brake rotors become warped about once every 18mos. Bad catalytic conv. at 90K & replaced tranny at 125K mi. Still fun to drive but the rep.& maint. is really annoying.

  • Dont buy a grand cherokee - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased a 2001 jeep and went to trade it in yesterday (after 6 months of owning) and the dealership said it is only worth $17,500. Since I paid $25,000 6 months ago, what a loss!! It has been in the shop 8 times. Key sticks in ignition, power steering pump was replaced twice. Then 2 days ago the whole thing shut down and stalled. The closest dealership replaced gaskets and sensors. Why all these things happen with a brand new suv with 10,000 miles is beyond me.

  • Once upon a lemon - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought this car with 8 miles on odom. Lucky we bought warranty. Replaced transmission module in early 08 after numerous arguments with dealer, cant replicate problem. Very scary feeling not being in control of your vehicle. Jan 10 same transmission issue shuttered and shook at 20 miles an hour pulled into station. Shut off for 5 minutes, hasnt happened sense. The Windows, etc to list other obvious issues with vehicle. Looks are deceptive on this one. Run from this lemon

We have had nothing but continuing problems with this vehicle. It has been in the shop 4 times for transmission problems, one time for the security chip going out (leaving me stranded), and 2 times for the tire pressure light which comes on often for no reason. In addition, the MPG average is 13 mpg, which is not what the window sticker said. Also, the canvas type seats stain terribly, even from water. Kinda funny for a Jeep.

  • Do Not Purchase! - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Make sure you do your homework. Jeep is having problems with transmission getting water in it. Took mine in yesterday after an oil change place noticed transmission fluid looked like a strawberry shake. Dealership said that problem is with the A/C condensation leaking into the transmission. They had to flush my transmission over 15 times before it turned to normal. Will pickup in the morning and probably take to another dealer and trade in. Service didnt seem to think that this would cause a problem in the future ... year right! This seems to be a big problem for Jeep on the horizon since they are going to have this problem with Grand Cherokees as well as the 300 since they have same transmission.

  • Rock solid reliabilty - 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Ive had it for 5 years now and Im up to 121K and it still runs great. Bought it with 48K on it. It has been extremely reliable. Replaced water pump at 100K and starter at 115K Put CV boots on @ 120K (BTW-thats pretty normal wear). Besides that, Only reg. maint. items required (brakes and oil). V8 has plenty of power; I get 15-16 back and forth to work and about 19 mpg on the highway. Not bad for a 4000lb SUV. It handles great for an SUV-much better than my friends Explorer. Hope to get 200k out of it before I buy another.

  • Traded my Baby on Saturday 7/18/2009 - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Only complaint, right arm rest got a dip worn into it from my elbow from so much driving. Didnt get off road as much as I wanted, but when I did, it got me there and back in great style. The only time it didnt start, was the day I traded it. ($600 repair) I was exceptionally pleased with how it got me through heavy snows in PA, stuck with the road in heavy rain, easy maneuvering, great sound system. But tended to feel cramped with a family of four, loaded for vacation. Open road, got 23 MPG...in DC traffic, just 13 MPG. Right now, its being prepped for re-sale. This Jeep was fun to camp with, and for day-fishing trips.
