Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

Pretty good overall. Runs smooth and has only less than 80,000 on the clock.

  • Fun, Gorgeous but unreliable - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Offroad performance is amazing. The JCG can go where only custom 4WDs dare and do so with greater comfort and speed. I cant imagine a better offroad experience. Around town and on the highway the JCGs performance doesnt stand out except for the peppy acceleration from the 4.7L engine, yet its still comfortable and predictable. Unfortunately, reliability is lousy. Ive replaced power window motors 5 times twice out of warranty, 2 side view mirror motors, an engine computer, a fuel pump, transmission leaks, and a radiator! Still, overall Id buy again: the good points far outweigh the bad if you can afford to deal with the unreliability.

If you read a lot of the reviews here, it seems a lot of people have had very negative experiences with their Jeeps. I guess I am one of the lucky ones! After almost one year and almost 20k miles of ownership, I have never had a single problem. Not one! In total, I have 70k miles on the vehicle and it still looks and feels new. And, when it comes to bang for the buck, I could not be more pleased. I was cross- shopping 00-02 Range Rovers when I bought this Jeep, and the Jeep is more comfortable, more powerful, and far more reliable. Find a well-cared for example and you will not be disappointed!

I bought mine 3 years ago, and liked it to begin with, I always wanted a red grand Cherokee. Now that Ive had it, I dont think Ill be getting another. Atleast not one like mine again! The inline 6 engine is a sorry little fella. If you get stuck behind that rv going up the mountain, good luck getting around him on the straight away! And once again this winter (as per every winter Ive had it) it left me frustrated and stranded in the cold once already. Starters, ignition rotors, neutral safety switches, fuel pumps, this thing loves to find a reason to quit running. Also, nasty squeal when air conditioning is on. (common) and when it gets cold- my doors wont shut! (also common)

  • Fun Car to drive... - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This is my second jeep ( had a 2004 ) And i really like this car. Have had a few minor problems that chrysler took care of... i had the emergency break cord unhook and it was making a horrible noise under the car as if the muffler was dragging.. they had to replace something on the transmission and shifter column because it would decelerate for no reason.. all was fixed though by the company... Overall the GC seems really safe for my family .. Its got very solid handling and to maneuver this car is so easy! driving it has been really fun!

  • Not sure about this new Gr Cherokee - 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I owned a 1995 Gr. Cherokee, drive it until it had 175K miles and absolutely loved it! Im not sure about my 2006 model. First off, the design of the interior must have been an after thought. Gear shift and brake handle takes up so much room that theres not enough storage space for anything. I work as a field salesman and have stuff that I need to have available when travelling-no place to store anything. The ledges are all sloped towards the driver, so you cant use those. HVAC vents are poorly placed to be of any benefit. My transmission does things while driving that I cant understand. V6 Engine is powerful enough for normal driving, but if you are planning to tow, get the V8.

  • Good Value - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Good value for the money. Handles well on all surfaces. Good reliability except brakes. Would buy again.

  • Been a great car - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought this car with 99k miles, and it currently has 125k miles. So far, I have had to do no repair work (besides changing a turn signal light bulb, which was a pain). The car handles admirably in all conditions - rain, snow, mud, off- road. However, I think that I will soon have to replace the CV axles, which will cost me about $400. My only gripes about the car are 1) the factory stereo system is kind of shot, but I can deal with that, and 2) the spare tire takes up a lot of room in the trunk space. Ive found that if I drive the car about 70 mph, I can get 19 mpg, which is pretty good for a car this size. I would definitely purchase this vehicle again.

We bought this car used with 24k and it had no problems whatsoever, but after the 15 day return of the vehicle we have had nothing but trouble ever since. It has been to the dealer more than 3 times. It shakes really bad when you drive it and the air will not work unless it is on lo of you put it any higher the car will break down. The check engine light is constantly on and has been reset. We have owned a jeep before and just had a few problems with it but I would not recommend any type of jeep to anyone. With all the money we have spent on parts it should work just fine even though it has 80,000 on it. Every time it goes to the dealer there is always something with it. So dont buy one.
