Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

Ive had only one problem in the 3 1/2 years Ive owned this vehicle. That was the water pump. Ive put over 50,000 miles on it since I bought it used. All in all I love my Jeep.

  • Worth The Small Headaches... - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I purchased my 5.2 V8 in late 2001 and have put 10K miles on it since. In that time I have grown to love this vehicle despite its quirks. The most common problem across the board is bad differentials which cause a loud growl or whining noise when bad. Other than that,my only problems have been a bad IAC motor($90)and a steering dampener and Catalyst, probably about $700 total. Not bad for a vehicle that has over 100K on it! Nice interiors, but cheap parts overshadow this, not good for a 35000+ vehicle. These are capable offroad vehicles that will reward you if you take care of them. You MUST keep on a strict maintenance schedule to avoid problems.

  • 5.9 LTD...Rare for a good reason! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

My relationship with my 5.9 LTD is Love and Hate. Within 5 hours of purchasing it I was stranded on the side of the freeway with a blown radiator and fan switch! I probably should have returned it, but unfortunatly I loved the plush black leather, chrome exhasut and roaring speed! A year later I am $4000 deep in repairs, and my sunroof is unrepariable unless I want to by a new one for $1600... ouch! I shouldnt have cancelled the extended warranty..

  • Bad brakes - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Expect that every 12,000 miles you will have to replace the rotors. And our dealer even told us that Chrysler was of no help. Now, at 36 K , shocks need to be replaced. 99.99 % suburban driving !! Never again.

  • Totally awesome Overland - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I absolutely love driving my Overland. I have always had Jeeps and it doesnt get much better than this. My Overland has the high output engine so you definitely get around fast! It has everything you can get for it and I would not trade it for the world, except for a newer one (2004) Its worth the price if you find one used. I wouldnt spend the $45k for a new one, but to get one used is well worth.

  • sell,sell,sell - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Bought last year @148,000 mi. Its a play vehicle and gets about 5000 mi. A year. Have spent money on it from day one. Staring off just trying to make everything perfect. Then I started getting a rear bear nosie. Replaced all rear end bearings. The Carrier bearing was the only one pitted. That didnt fix the the problem. Right rear axle was pitted changed it. That fixed the bearing noise. Then I got a vibration @1600 rpm and on deceleration. Changed u-joints (a waste of $). From what Ive read sounds like this is a Major problem that is very hard to trouble shoot (even at a dealer. Dont want to spend any more $ on it. Im torn between spending and just selling it. I love to drive it but the vibration.

  • Best Vehicle Ive Ever Owned - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I bought this as my first SUV in March 2007 with 113k Miles for $3900. Dad always said 4WD was just something else to pay for when it breaks down, but after driving this in WI snow storms, Im sold!. My Jeeps 4WD is magical and this is by far the best vehicle Ive ever owned. The only non-routine maintenance Ive encountered is: the rear wiper doesnt work, the rear hatch support struts are beginning to fail in cold temps and Ive had to replace the yr old battery shortly after I purchased the vehicle. The towing package pulls my trailer around perfectly. I cant wait to pull the boat & camper this summer. Im officially a Jeep Guy. My next vehicle will be a 01 or newer Grand Cherokee.

  • electrical issues - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This jeep is great when it comes to driving in the snow. Its not bad around town, it looks great in dark grey. I have had some issues with the electrical system though. The pass. side taillight keeps going out and none of the windows go up or down. I feel they could have done a better job on the electrical system.

  • think about another brand - 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

This was my first and last mopar product. The jeep definitely needs more Benz influence to improve the product. Good thing that my local servicing dealer takes very good care of me. The transfer case leaked, the electric fan was replaced, the engine stalls and restarts when it feels like it. The brake rotors are too flimsy, I have replaced 2 sets of rotors already. 4 wheel drive works intermittently, has let me down a few times when needed. Not a real bad vehicle, but Im going back to A GM product, which had much better quality.
