This Year's Model Updates:

A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.

Pros:
  • Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
Cons:
  • Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

The 2001 jeep (v8) has excellent, smooth power and gets the exact same gas mileage as our 6cyl.(17 city,19 hiway). Acceptable smooth ride for a 4X4. Has been very reliable so far with only a few small problems (seat heater and warped brake rotors). Dealer very responsive and good to deal with. We dont like the leather seats, too slippery and uncomfortable. Drivers hand and elbow position on the steering wheel awkward and uncomfortable. We love the car and would buy another.

  • Problematic Vehicle - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

After a year of having my GC, I had one problem after the next. In the last year, the window regulator has had to be replaced on the passenger and driver side. Also, the check engine light has gone on at least 6 times, and all repairs were very costly and usually required new parts. Finally, my transmission randomly gave out after exiting the highway one day. Ive had my check engine light go on twice in one week for completely separate problems. This was my first Jeep and will most certainly be my last due to the reliability issues. The good things about this car are overshadowed by all the repairs-at the rate Im spending money on it I could have bought an 07 instead of going used!

  • Satisfied After 20 Months - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased this used in June 05 with 59,500 miles. The ONLY problem I have had with this Jeep is that Ive replaced the battery twice in 20 months. I drive with my headlights on "auto" and Im told this drains the battery. Other than that, Im extremely happy with it. The seats are VERY comfortable. I usually drive 80 on the highway and gas mileage is around 17 mpg but I also have the 4.7 L engine and I put larger tires on it. Ive gone mudding in this Jeep and taken it on the beach and still no problems. All electronics still work and no brake problems. I change the oil every 3K miles, however I am not sure what the previous owners did.

Ive been happy with my Laredo. Good looks in interior and exterior. Fuel economy isnt so good, but I was used to driving an Accord. Drivers seat could be a little more comfortable for the long drive. Only real complaint is interior noise is high.

  • Jeep does the wrong thing - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

My Jeep had less than 50k miles, and it was dealer maintained. It developed a cracked head! This is an obvious factory defect. I got very little from Daimler/Chrysler since it is just out of warranty (36k warranty on it). One of the lackeys in Customer Service even hung up on me. I own 2 Jeeps! This is the last Jeep for my wife (she drives this one). She is going back to Ford. Jeep messed up on this one. I am telling all my friends who own Jeeps.

I started my Jeep affiliation in the Army with the M151a2 (& a3s), talk about go anywhere. I tried other vehicles but finally tired of getting stuck in the snow & unable to truly off road, I purchased a 2000 Cherokee Sport. Loved it! As a District Manager for a local newspaper, that vehicle was just perfect. Bad road conditions & winters in upstate NY had met their match. Then the GC caught my eye & I bought a 2001 in 2006 @ a fair price w/nice options and 83k miles. After replacing the rear stabilizer bearings, the only real problem I have is the blind spot issue. The space between the forward part of the pass/side front window, leading to the windshield is dangerous. look twice before you go.

  • 2001 Grand Cherokee limited 2wd 4.7l - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This could have been one of my favorite vehicles ever. With all the bells and whistles our limited is quite comfortable and the 4.7l v8 is strong in a midsize suv. Rear seats are cramped for adults but fine for children. Build quality is poor. Ive had $1600 of work to replace all the a/c blending doors. Ive also replaced driver and passenger window regulators as well as one tail light assembly and both headlights due to pitted lenses and driver seat heat element.

Right after we purchased the Grand Cherokee My wife was caught in a long ride home during a snowstorm and when I called her she was calm saying she felt safe and in control. My wife and sons safety is very important and the Jeep proved itself worthy on yet another occasion. Late one evening she was on her way home from a friends house on a stretch of dark road when a deer crossed her path. The only evidence she hit a deer was some fur in the grille. Could other SUVs perform like this...maybe...but The Jeep did!

This has been a pretty good car for us, with two exceptions. First, there was a knock in the rear end that could not be found for over a year. The "spider gear" in the differential was rattling and had to be replaced. Second, the front end braking system is too small for the weight of this vehicle. You will go through rotors very quickly. My first set was replaced at 15,000 miles. I am goint to have to replace them again at 45,000. This time, with a very heavy duty, heat displacing rotor.

Have over 75K miles and only thing other than normal maintenance needed was a fuel filter at 51K and radiator hose at 68K. Gets far better mileage than the EPA rating and is roomy and comfortable. Could handle better, but it is an SUV. Have heard others complain, but it gets better fuel economy and has been just as reliable as my previous SUV (Toyota 4Runner). Would buy another one in a second. Maybe people have problems due to way they maintain their vehicles.
