Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

This has been a great car. The only problem in 3 years was a problem with the cruise control that was fixed while they changed my oil.

  • I love my 5.9 - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This has to be one of the best SUVs available used. I would take it over any mid-size SUV or wimpy crossover. Yes it is true many of these need to have their front and rear axles rebuilt around 100k miles, but that is not so bad. For the price of the vehicle it is easy to spend that money to have them done. When they are rebuilt they will last an easy 100k+ or more. It is completely justifiable. These Jeeps have awesome power, and very luxurious interiors. The 5.9 limited has better leather seats than any Jeep, heated seats, heated mirrors, a great AWD system, and timeless classic styling. I recommend this Jeep for anyone looking for a reliable vehicle.

The car has cost us a ton of money in repairs. Jeep replaced half of the engine in the first 1000 miles. We have had to repair a head gasket, a rear end twice, an automatic transmission twice, etc. It just is not a well made car.

I owned a 96 JGC prior to purchasing the 2000 Laredo. So for I enjoy driving this vehical. Its fun to drive. I have the V8 235 hp engine, two tone leather seat package found in the overland, sun roof, heated mirrors and the infinity gold sound system. I hope this vehical turns out to be as reliable as my 96 was. With a lot of the reviews however, it making me wonder if this vehical with be dependable. I do not drive it every day. Only on the week ends. I love the body design and one of the reasons I got it was I think you get more bang for the buck when compared to the BMW SUV.

Live in Manitoba Canada. We really have enjoyed this vehicle and use it regularly off road to go to our remote cottage. Factory tires were garbage and replaced with BFG TA KOs. Cant imagine how a vehicle of this caliber & price could be equipped with such lousy tires. Fuel economy acceptable for a V8 SUV. Glad we didnt get a 6 cyl. Quadra-Trac 11 is pretty neat

  • Beware the Grand Cherokee Laredo Lemon - 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The engine has what appears to be a misfiring problem. Turns out that its the air compressor not working properly, which puts an intermittent load on the engine, causing it to appear to misfire. According to two different dealerships, Jeep is aware of the problem, and has been for a very long time, but has yet to fix it. In addition, the air conditioner vent control is faulty, causing the air to come out of the heater and defroster for the first 30 seconds or so as the vent control recalibrate ... not a big deal, but just annoying. Neither dealership was able to resolve this problem either. One suggested that the two problems are related. This is definitely my last Jeep purchase, ever!

Bought the rig in 2000 with 35K miles, now have 159K and no real problems. Had to replace the brakes, fuel pump @ about 125K and recently the water pump. The rig runs like a charm, my only complaint is the suspension is a tad too loose, otherwise been a great vehicle and plan on keeping it a few more years

  • Cost of Ownership Very HIGH - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I bought my 2001 Laredo 4WD 6cyl. hoping for a high quality SUV. I have been disappointed! The front driver seat broke loose from the floor after 5000 miles. The dealer replaced the seat incorrectly causing more problems at 20,000 miles. The Jeep changes gears VIOLENTLY!! Finally it stopped shifting at 48,000 miles and $600.00 later the "transmission govenor" was replaced with marginal results. Rear seat not secured well, lots of annoying "clicks" and "tick" noises that cannot be identified! I would not recommend this vehicle.
