Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

  • Alpine Navigation Radio Rear Camera Bust - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

The AWD has a heavy draggy feel, especially turning. There is no manual switch on the rear camera (unlike RV), so no way to monitor a trailer via camera. Its instant off, so if you pull up, you lose the view. Objects are much closer than they appear. Adjusting the brightness of the nav unit is possible, but no adjust for when in radio mode, except ineffective dash brightness. I have a towel taped over the dash as all settings are way too bright at night. Per tech there is no way to turn off the display. Per dash computer, MPG has been a disappointing 11.5 MPG over the first 300 miles. Roadside coverage is watered down - no coverage for lockouts, flats or gas.

  • Jeep Stinks - 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Bought a 1997 Grand Cherokee Laredo new in 1997. It was great for 3 years and 38,000 miles and then it turned to junk! Air conditioner went out. Brakes went out. Had to replace pads and turn rotors. Tires wore out. The dealership acted like the never heard of us. $1000 bucks to fix the air and it still only worked half the time. Finally traded it in for an Isuzu Trooper. Isuzu was 10 times better than the Jeep.

  • Good enough for me - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I bought this 02 Grand Cherokee over 2 years ago now and its been good. Had to replace front rotors and brake pads, spark plugs, tires and oil of course. Put on over 25000 miles now and very reliable for me. A rear axle seal is bad now and something is making noise with the AWD system. Inline 6 was a great motor, now the 3.7 v-6 isnt nearly as good but thats why Chrysler went bankrupt. Love the styling, roomy and powerful, handles well in snow or off road. Headlight lenses clouded up too. Just starting to rust 10 years down the line. Go get one!

  • Outstanding Jeep Grand Cherokee - 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

We have owned our 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Laredo since Spring of 2000 and it has been an excellent buy. We have taken it in the mountains of NH, VT, MA, ME & PA. It has performed well on the highway, as well as inter-city driving. It has never been garaged and has no rust. It is quite dependable and cost effective to repair, but repair have been the standard stuff, nothing really major.

  • 2007 Cherokee stalling/accelerating problems - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Bought my Cherokee brand new in 2006, immediately began having problems... the same as most complaints on here. My jeep would lose power, fail to accelerate over 30mph, fail to start, check engine light goes on & off, all dash lights come on & off. This began before 30,000 miles so the dealer replaced the ignition switch under warranty, that worked great for 20k+ miles but the problem began again recently. PLEASE report your issues to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. 100s if not 1,000s of people are complaining of this problem online and Chrysler needs to be held responsible for it. http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints/

  • Why my Jeep is a LEMON... - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

We purchased our Jeep in Sept. 2007 and have had it back for repairs three times in the last two months for the same problem. Our Jeep Grand Cherokee has stalled out and has slipped out of gear 14 times during this time. The vehicle only has 11,000 miles on it and the Chrysler Dealership repair shop first said it was a fuel problem, then it was error messages identifying the transmission, and now the dealership has told us that it is unable to duplicate the problem and has given us the Jeep back with no repairs being made. My wife has almost been involved in two accidents, one of which my two daughters were in the car. I always heard about the reliability of Jeep but this will be our last Jeep

  • Had a good one - 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

We must have been lucky, we had a pretty good experience with our jeep. At 86,000 miles it was smashed by a tree in our driveway. We had only spent money on brakes, tires and a water pump. Otherwise it ran great and filled our needs. Im headed out looking for another one to replace ours. I"ve been looking at reviews and no matter what you own; people have trouble. Just try researching other cars! Its a shame manufacturers wont stand behind their cars when its pretty obvious there are issues with some parts.

  • Excellent Ride - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

The jeep has all the power it needs with the V-6. Acceleration is good even on a hill. Better gas mileage is only found in smaller SUVs.This one is just average like its competitors. I love the size and fit of the cabin layout. My six foot plus sons ride in the back very comfortably. I would recommend one as my sister did to me.

  • A great all around SUV - 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

Update 9/16. Owned this car a year now and have 12K miles. The experience has been, overall, a good one. Just about every time I get into the Jeep I note the quality of the interior, comfortable seating and its quietness on the road. Handling is great in all seasons. Last winter wasnt our worst here in MN but I can honestly say I never spun a tire or experienced any slipping/sliding at all. If I head out on a long trip I can expect 27 MPG and today my mixed driving MPG said 24.3. Its a good all around vehicle. I have no complaints at all. What follows is my original review. I looked over all the SUVs on the market, did research for 3 months. I wanted something that held 5 passengers (dont need 7 passenger seating), decent gas mileage, reasonable creature comforts but not all the bells and whistles and something that, if there was a sudden zombie takeover, I could drive off the road without worrying about how the car would hold up. Already had a 7 year old Patriot so I knew what I could expect in the way of service at my local Jeep dealer. I decided on a fairly basic Laredo with tow package and a few add ons. My dealer posts the bottom line no haggle price on line so I knew the cost (about three grand down from sticker). Finally saw one listed on line locally and went in to look at it. The test drive, used car evaluation (they gave me very close to book in spite of all the squeaks and rattles) and decision to buy took about 30 minutes. Ive been buying cars since 1978 and this is the smoothest experience Ive had to date. So what did I get? A very smooth ride: if you need a better ride you will pay more. Great handling on dry pavement and in snow: I live in Minnesota where this is critical. Nice interior that is quiet on the road. Comfortable seats for everyone; I got the power drivers seat with adjustable lumbar support which is excellent. A peppy 3.6 L engine that does better than I really need (you have to have driven a 4 cylinder engine to appreciate this). Gas mileage: about 22-23 day to day and on one three hour trip I got 28 mpg all highway. I really like the gauges which are well done and controls are sensibly laid out. Room? I just returned from a vacation where we loaded 4 adults and all the luggage and had plenty of room. Overall Ive had it six months and cant find anything I would change. So far Ive not had any service issues. I did purchase an extended bumper to bumper warranty.
