Model Overview:

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the pioneers that ushered in the modern midsize SUV in the early 1990s. Jeep has always wanted the Grand Cherokee to be maneuverable enough for urban duty, roomy enough for family duty, stylish enough to take out on the town and capable enough to tow your toys or shuttle your passengers to a remote campsite. Modern Grand Cherokees are far more refined than the early models, but they're no less versatile.

Unlike most other traditional SUVs, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has always been built using a carlike unibody platform for superior on-road handling. Yet Jeep's strong reputation for off-road prowess is retained, thanks to the Grand Cherokee's advanced four-wheel-drive systems and capable suspension. It's a rare combination of attributes in a modern utility vehicle, as the Jeep is able to venture farther off the beaten path than competing crossover SUVs.

My wife and I bought our JGC in 98 with 56k and although we dont drive it a lot, we both like it and now have 87k on it. I like the aggressive Jeep ride, it starts very well in winter, smooth transmission and a person can pull utility trailers easily also. I have only replaced the rear brakes, tires all around and added a little a/c refrigerant.

I traded in a 87 4Runner for this car . After sitting in serveral other SUVS , the buckets of this car just screamed BUY ME. So I did. 50k later Im trading it in . The interior looked great but didnt hold up. The mechanics were jacked too. Changed the water pump 3 times and replaced both the o2 and exaust sensors. The V6 also lost power at around 50k.

I bought this for a family vehicle and it has done very well it was a 1 owner when purchased @94,000 miles. It now has 121,000 and has had no Major problems I think this is due to the owner before me taking care of it I have had to replace the radiator and idle air control (the iac was causing it to die at idle) and its due for a tune up I do all my own work so no labor to pay for and most of the time after a little searching I can find the new parts I need cheap oil gets changed every 3k miles with mobile1 10w-30 its had it share of offroad and did well overall a decent vehicle if its taken care of I think I love it and would drive on or offroad anywhere

This was my first Jeep Ive ever bought and to be honest for a winter vehicle I dont think Ill ever buy anything else. Ive driven several SUVs and trucks and I have to say by far the Jeep Cherokee is the absolute best vehicle Ive ever driven in the Snow. The 5.7 eats through the gas though I would recommend maybe going with the 3.7 or 4.7 if your worried about gas millage. With the 5.7L this vehicle can really move but again 14 MPG is a little steep when gas prices are high.

  • Problems - 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I purchased the car new and its been in for service more than its been on the road. Ive had electrical problems with the headlights and interior lights flickering. The seat belt warning light and chime going on and off intermittently and the dealer cant find any problems. Now Im having starting issues. Im sorry I purchased this vehicle. Jeep service is terrible!

  • Great SUV - no issues - 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee

This has been a great car to own and drive. Car has been mechanically sound and Ive only had to bring it into dealer for regular maintenance. Very confident handling in snow and solid feel to drive. Only recommendation in AWD is to rotate tires every 5K miles for even wear.

  • Love it! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I decided to go ahead with the purchase, and have been happy ever since. Jeep has a longstanding good name, and make reliable SUVs that are the only (besides hummer) commerical vehicle ready to take on the Rubikon right off the assembly line, something that I learned in years past. I have never had to use 4-Lo, and have never gotten stuck in snow, mud, or water, and there have been sometimes that I thought nobody could pull me out, but with a little manuvering, Jeeps can really get out of ANYTHING!!! ALmost....

  • Beware of Transfer Case Problems and Elecronics - 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee
    By -

I bought my GC Laredo 4.7L used. I had the service 4wd message in the dashboard and took it to the Jeep dealer. The GC had some weird noise in the transfer case area. It cost me $100.00 for a diagnostic to tell me that the transfer case was bad. An a quote of S3,500 for a remanufactured Chrysler NV245 transfer case because Chrysler does not make those junk transfer cases anymore. I went to a transmission shop and they installed a used one from the junk yard and couple weeks after the electric motor of the transfer case went bad. I complained to Chrysler about the transfer case and their response was that after 100,000 I am expected to replace the transfer case. I had 1997 Honda CRV with 297,000 plus miles without transfer case issues.
