Overview & Reviews
A new five-speed automatic tranny provides a second overdrive ratio, resulting in greater fuel economy and reduced NVH in models equipped with the 4.7-liter V8. Chrome front tow hooks are now included if you get the skid plate group on the Limited model, while the Laredo model offers a Special Appearance Group package with 17-inch, five-spoke aluminum wheels, colored metallic front fascia and body cladding, body color license brow and liftgate handle, fog lamps, body side stripe, and leather seats. A hydraulically driven engine-cooling fan improves fuel economy on the 4.7-liter V8 and a quarter-turn fuel cap improves efficiency at the gas station. Limiteds get an AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD player as standard equipment, along with new "Euro-style" gathered leather seats as optional. The Trailer Tow Group now includes an underdash connector to make plugging in aftermarket trailer wiring harnesses a snap. Finally, child seat tethor anchors improve the Grand Cherokee's family-friendly nature while a LEV-compliant 4.7-liter V8 makes this Jeep more earth-friendly.
- Powerful 4.7-liter V8, all-terrain capability, roomy comfort for four.
- Quadra Drive whine, mushy seats detract from long-haul comfort, spotty reliability.

Grad Cherokee after 2 years owned - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Ryno11 - April 28 - 2:00 amGenerally we like it. Depreciation is HORRIBLE!! How about this drop in value? When we bought it 2 years ago, it was worth about $27K. Two years later, its worth $15K private party. About a 20% depreciation per year!!!! outrageous. At this rate, it wont be worth anything when Im done paying it off in 2 more years. I like the V8 power, and its never given us mechanical trouble. Suspension sways from side to side pretty badly on turns though.

First Jeep... maybe the last. - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By jeepguy777 - March 30 - 11:03 amPurchased in 2005 with 54,000 miles, now has 101,000. Drives great for an SUV, corners like a sports car. Getting around 18-20 on the highway. Only things have gone wrong are two speakers have blown, both heated seats went out, power steering pump, driveline seal, some interior parts are not quality made. other than those few items this Jeep has impressed me since the day I bought it. Still get looks when Im driving it. Looks brand new still. Probably will not buy another Jeep, because of the reliability issue.

Jeep GC Love/Hate - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By SM - March 18 - 12:10 pmThe abilities of this car lived up to my expectations. Unfortunately, during the 50k miles I owned it I experienced pretty much all of the problems other people have reported. The transmission was repaired once (wouldnt shift from 2nd to 1st after coming to a stop), warped front brake rotors twice, the hatch lock motor replaced, a window regulator replaced and the drivers seat frame broke on the left side where it bolts to the floor. I bought an extended service policy that took care of the most expensive repairs. The steering wheel doesnt look or feel centered with the seat and you replace the entire door panel if you want a factory replacement for a worn arm rest pad ($400 part).

Very good overall, brakes problematic - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Charlie Grayson - February 20 - 10:00 amThe beauty of this vehicle is it is relatively small for an SUV with the power of a V8 and 6300lb towing capacity. You wont find another vehicle that can pull as well that drives like a car when you arent pulling. Things I dont like: front brake rotors will warp under normal use every 10-15K miles and will need resurfacing to prevent shimmy. Jeeps warranty on this is 6K, I think. Also think front seats could be a bit firmer. Poor fuel economy when towing about 5500 lbs---about 9 mpg. Rear end makes a whirring noise when moving very slowly (5 mph or less), but is normal. Other than brakes, no real problems.

Love it! but not perfect! - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Aaron - December 3 - 3:36 pmI have only had one major problem with my Jeep when I needed a new transmission at about 110,000 miles. Other than that it drives great and is very reliable. Awesome in the snow! It will drive through anything! Comfortable to drive and handles well. The gas mileage can be pretty brutal especially if you try to go above 70.

Running Fine - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By CTODD92 - November 21 - 3:00 amI have had the vehicle for over 20K miles and have taken it to Iceland and Hawaii without incident. I had to replace the automatic rear hatch lock and the battery (both known problems). However, maintenance and parts was rather simple. The vehicle performs when I need a 4x4 but looks at home stylingwise in town. I am averaging 13.5 mpg in town. I wish that was a little better. I would suggest regular maintenance intervals be met and probably a front brake upgrade and airflow filter kit. Other than that, good used vehicle!

6 years and still stong - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By applebyte - August 10 - 9:06 pmI purchased this vehicle new and it has been one of my favorites. The styling and ride are great and the reliability has been quite good. Like all GCs of this year, the front brakes were horrible but once the solution was found, I cant complain one bit. The answer to the brake problem is to replace the pads and calipers with a brake kit from the Jeep dealer. Basically its the same setup found on the 2003 model! Ive had this vehicle on long trips and off-road in the woods of Pennsylvania. It has performed very well. Would I purchase another one? You bet!

Engine shot? - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Anti freeze guy - July 25 - 4:06 pmAs one of the few I can say that brakes have not been my major complaint. Up until a few months ago I had no complaints at all. Sadly it now appears that at 47K I need a major engine overhaul. The coolant level warning light comes on once a month. Entire system has been inspected by dealer and no external leaks have been found. Leaving one possibility.

Love That Jeep - 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Mike Wells - June 14 - 10:40 amI just recently bought my Jeep, and I can tell you that it is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. The acceleration is top notch; it will even keep up with some of the best sports cars. I love the interior. The seats are so comfortable. The controls are laid out well, and I love the steering wheel audio controls. The sound system in the vehicle is almost as good as some aftermarket systems. I really like the body style and love the 17" wheels and tires. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone who wants a very competent on/off road SUV.
